Behind the act of coming out lies a history of heteronormativity that was imposed upon society, and is also part of the history of the LGBTQ* struggle towards equality and human rights. It is an act that is witness to the multiple human rights violations that was committed against LGBTQ* individuals over the decades, and a real struggle that many individuals still face today. To appropriate the act of coming out, by extending it to straight people, would be to diminish and deny the significance of the act in light of its historical and present context for LGBTQ* individuals.
