Shin Meagmi Tensei IV (3DS)

The Good:

  • A mix of old-school SMT and new school
  • Graphics while exploring are on par with P4G.
  • Optional tutorials (great for those new to the series).
  • Negotiation system is the best and there's plenty of demons to recruit and fuse.
  • Story is pretty good, as is the voice acting.
  • OST is bitchin'.
  • Alignment system determines which ending you get.
  • Side quests, helpful when level-grinding.

The Bad:

  • Level grinding is hell until you get the rights apps.
  • Final boss battle isn't very satisfying.
  • Very easy for the enemy to get the upper hand thanks to the press-turn system and smirk system.
  • Demon sprite graphics in battle look like something from the GBA era.
  • Demons can still run away with your shit.

Overall:

I wouldn't recommend it someone who is new to gaming or RPGs but if you want a game with a good story, decent graphics, engaging battle system and gives you the feeling that every decision you make has an effect on the game, this is the game for you.

Final Fantasy X (PS Vita)

The Good:

  • CTB battle system is nice, let's you know whose turn is next
  • Level-grinding is easy
  • Lovely architecture and music
  • Satisfying final boss battle
  • Switching party members mid-battle without wasting a turn
  • Decent story
  • Every party member has a use
  • Sphere Grid (the customization part at least)
  • Summons are awesome

The Bad:

  • Story kind of falls apart towards the end
  • Blitzball (unless you like it, I hate sports hence I hate blitzball )
  • Party characters' personality are average at best
  • Graphics (even the HD version) have not aged well
  • Lack of ATB makes this game too easy
  • Sphere Grid (the filling in/unlocking part at least)
  • Overdrives (good luck with Wakka's and Lulu's)
  • Temple puzzles are tedious.

Overall:

I would definitely recommend this to anyone new to Final Fantasy. The battle system is beginner friendly and the story is decent. Not the best entry in the series but still worth playing.

Tales Of The Abyss (3DS)

The Good:

  • Fast-paced battle system
  • Free run and FOF which adds to the characters attacks
  • Satisfying final boss fight
  • Decent story and character development
  • The airship has auto-pilot
  • Pretty areas and good OST
  • No random encounters
  • Plenty of side quests

The bad:

  • Graphics are semi-polygonal
  • Lots of back-tracking
  • Guard button is located in a weird place
  • A little too melodramatic at times
  • Slight lag at times

Overall:

Definitely a game I would recommend at anyone who likes action RPGs with a good story and gameplay. Whether this is as good as the original PS2 version I can't say, but there's not that many Tales games for handhelds so give it a try.

Pokemon Y (3DS)

The Good:

  • New Pokemon to collect and train
  • Graphics are the best in the series
  • Pokemon Amie let's you interact with your Pokemon as if they were pets
  • IV/EV training made easy with Super Training
  • Mega-evolution add a new level of strength to old Pokemon
  • Trainer customization for a change
  • A new type (Fairy)
  • Wi-Fi features improved

The Bad:

  • Story is relatively the same as ever
  • Your rival(s) aren't very memorable
  • Incredibly easy by Pokemon standards (even without the broken Exp Share)
  • Not much to do post-game
  • Slight lag here and there
  • Hoard and Sky battles aren't that interesting
  • Evil team does little good for the story
  • Too much pandering to older generations

Overall:

Well it looks nice, I'll give it that. Pokemon Y does some things right and some things wrong but at the end of the day, it's still the same Pokemon game we know and love. Hopefully the next generation will put more effort into difficulty, characters, and amount of Pokemon introduced.

Super Smash Bros (3DS)

Website: http://www.smashbros.com/us/3ds/index.html

Pros

- Large range of characters to choose from and some of the new comers are my favourites

- A lot of multi-player capabilities

- Customisable characters

- Final form of stages is a nice option*

- Lots of other little things you can do in game, such as customising characters, 'mini-games,' challenges, etc

--> leads to unlocking trophies, equipment and so forth

- It looks nice, the controls are easy to get used to (somewhat)

Cons

- Many players, including myself, are having problems connecting with the online server; however, most are giving online play positive reviews so maybe it's just me

- There are so many characters, yet most of them are unlocked from the get go

- The stages are way too gimmicky... some standard stages would have been nice even if there's the final form option*

- 'Smash Run' is too easy

- The Solo - Classic mode doesn't feel very classic... it is very quick as well, which can be both a pro and con

- Not pleased with the amount you can do with all of the coins gathered

Overall

Out of all of the SSB games I have played (all, minus melee), this one has to be my favourite. I personally don't see anything in either Brawl or 64 that can surpass what I have been given in this game. There is a lot of content packed into the game, so it's fit to entertain anybody. The amount of locked content is rather disappointing and I wish I were made to feel more excited unlock things -

so I didn't have much to anticipate, considering my favourites were already unlocked and all of the locked stages/other things did not appeal to me at all.

I'm feeling left down at the current state of the online system, however, I know it's probably my problem. After hours of research and attempting to get into it, I kind of give up on it. Whenever it does let me through, it's incredibly difficult to play due to lag (again, my problem). I hope to begin playing online soon, though.

8/10

Pretty much my thoughts on the game, especially the gimmicky stages. Magicant and Balloon Fight are the ones I dislike the most.

Bravely Default (3DS)

The Good:

  • Graphics (the 3d models are good for 3ds standards and the sketched backgrounds are lovely)
  • Battle mechanics (the Brave/Default system, job classes, support abilities, friend summoning add a lot to make battles interesting and addictive)
  • Story (it's good for the first half and finale)
  • Adjustable settings (turn-off random encounters, set difficulty mid-game)
  • Great final boss (I like how the developers incorporated the 3ds camera and friend system into the battle).

The Bad:

  • Grinding (until you get the Chapter 6 job class, expect a shitload of grinding)
  • Story's second half (tedious pseudo boss gauntlet basically)
  • One note characters (decent voice acting but no emotional investment for the characters)

Overall:

A perfect example of how padding can diminish a game's quality. This game does a lot of great things but equally bad things to make for a love/hate experience and a test for one's patience. Would recommend this to hardcore RPG fanatics and fans of Final Fantasy but not to someone new to RPGs.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (3DS)

The Good:

  • First person perspective (this game really wants to make you feel like an explorer)
  • Battle mechanics (turn-based plus Boost system and Grimoire Stones)
  • FOEs (they're like mini-bosses but numerous, they respawn, and move in different ways)
  • Decent story
  • Side quests (plenty of plus bonus exp.)
  • Item collecting (sell them for money, equipment, or side quests)
  • Wonderful graphics (a huge improvement from the original)

The Bad:

  • Ball bustingly hard
  • Bullshit moments in boss fights (this is an Atlus game after all)
  • Grimoire Stones (you can beat this game without ever having to understand the synthesis)

Overall:

A solid dungeon-crawler and remake with good looks, simple but engaging battle system, endearing story and characters, and plenty of replay value. Nothing award winning but a satisfying game nonetheless. 9/10

Pokemon Omega Ruby (3DS)

The Good:

  • Graphics (everyone and everything got a huge upgrade from the 32-bit original)
  • Features (DexNav and sneaking are the best ^_^)
  • Rivals (they actually act like rivals and do more here than before)
  • Delta Episode (if this part had more work done, it could've been it's own game)
  • Post-game (plenty to do after the Champion battle)

The Bad:

  • Cheese (even by Pokemon standards, Game Freak laid it on pretty thick)
  • Antagonists (their methods towards their goal doesn't add up)
  • Framerate drop (nothing that would hinder gameplay but very noticeable in battles)

Overall:

Every Pokemon remake has been a hit and Omega Ruby is no exception. It improves on the original in every aspect, keeping the story and region intact while adding new things to the mix to please old and new fans. Highly recommended. 9.5/10

20141027104514!Tales_of_Hearts_R_cover.j

Tales of Hearts R (PS Vita)

The Good:

  • The battle mechanics (it's so much fun using chase link to juggle and beat the shit out of defenseless enemies)
  • Level up systems (similar to SMT's/Persona's but with the addition of learning an arte, higher skill count, or a new weapon)
  • Decent story
  • Good graphics

The Bad:

  • one-note characters (heavy use of anime tropes)
  • re-used assets (the world looks no different from past titles)
  • animation
  • certain puzzles (Fuck those floor puzzles!)

Overall

I always liken the Tales series as a cheesy shounen anime in game form and Hearts R does nothing to change that opinion. A great entry in the Tales series and a must have for the Vita. If you've play other Tales of games, you already know what to expect with Hearts R but for those who are new, the gameplay alone is a blast, the story is alright, and it's 40 hours worth investing in. 9/10

The World Ends With You (DS)

The Good:

  • Nice story
  • Gameplay (this game makes use of everything the DS has to offer; touchscreen, D-pad, microphone, both screen, and the battle are addictive)
  • Customization (skills and abilities and be mixed up however you want them too, you can even adjust your level)
  • Graphics (art style, animation, and sprites are pretty good by DS standards)
  • Side quests (plenty)

The Bad:

  • Controls (since they work differently compared to other games, it's easy to activate a skill when your intention was to move or mess up a skill. Also, good luck trying to keep track of the action on two screens.)
  • Music (a nitpick on my part, I'm not a fan of vocal tracks in games)
  • One save file

Overall:
One of the most interesting games I've played on any DS system since the gameplay feels unique and engaging, the characters are lovable, the story has a wonderful message. While I can see people who are bad at multi-tasking hating this game, I would still highly recommend this to anyone who wants a solid and fresh take on the action RPG genre. 9.5/10

Chrono Trigger (DS)

The Good:

  • Good story (love the balance between seriousness and humor)
  • Battle mechanics (besides ATB, the bottom screen makes command input a breeze)
  • Pacing and grinding
  • Sidequests
  • Music
  • Characters
  • Graphics (these bit sprites have aged gracefully)
  • Epic final boss

The Bad:

  • Unnecessary anime cut scenes (there're not bad but the sprites re enact the scene anyway)

Overall:

For a game that originated in the SNES era, Chrono Trigger holds up well to this day. That's really nothing at all I can find issue with, this game is as solid as an RPG can get. One of the best in the genre. 10/10
