What's the difference between Hanteo and Gaon chart?

Recommended Posts

does that mean even overseas album sales are counted towards gaon?

Iz*one sold 232k (gaon) in Korea plus the 49k in Japan does that mean they sold a total of 281k albums. or does the 232k in gaon count even the 49k in Japan?

Yes. 232k.

Hanteo is real time + counts only some stores associated to Hanteo (IIRC, they're mainly korean)

Gaon is monthly + counts the shipments made to stores all over the world

One is not more reliable than the other when it comes to total sales and so on

As people have said already above

Gaon is also more trustworthy.

Since albums that are returned since they are sitting on the shelf, are reported

where as Hanteo doesnt count albums returned.

arent goan sale still count as sales cause the store bought them?

Of course. But, whatever isn't sold is sent back and Gaon adjusts their figures. So, it's a much better system. Stores aren't going to let merchandise sit and take up valuable space for long.

Adding to what everyone else has said above, hanteo actually does not reflect “korean†sales 100% of the time. For some groups/artists with big international fans, they can expect to have high hanteo sales as well because international fans will order their albums from online korean stores which gets counted to hanteo.

So if a group decides to distribute albums to another country (i.e. Japan), you can expect the hanteo sales to go down (because fans from those country will no longer buy from online stores) but you can expect a rise in gaon and whatever metric that country uses to count sales (billboard, oricon, etc)

Gaon is monthly + counts the shipments (minus returns) of albums produced in korea made to stores all over the world

This + bold part

- Locally produced albums (ex: Taiwan produced,...) are not count neither with Gaon, neither with Hanteo

- Gaon tracks and deducts returns while hanteo doesn't.
