Avengers: Endgame shattered the bounds of realistic opening weekend predictions this weekend, with a towering $350 million domestic and $1.2 billion in its global debut. Of note, 45% of that came from 3-D showings around the world while $91.5 million came from IMAX (double their previous opening weekend record) and even 4DX earned $15 million globally on the title.

Domestically, the film earned a 2.23x multiplier (not bad considering the numbers) and snagged the biggest Thursday preview ($60 million), the biggest “pure Friday†($96.7 million), the biggest single-day gross ($156.7 million on Friday counting the previews), the biggest Saturday ($109 million, down just 31% from Friday) and biggest Sunday grosses ($84.3 million) even when adjusted for inflation.

Avatar is so forgettable.I dont understand how it became the highest grossing movie. Can anyone even explain why???

ikr ive never heard anyone around me talking about Avatar like no one even knows what is it about aside from being the highest grossing film somehow, Avengers outsold it has organic success and it deserves being the number 1 film

Because it started and revolutionized the 3D trend in cinema. It was an event that everyone wanted to go see.

And Titanic fame. That might not mean so much in Western countries, but to many others Titanic remained as popular as it was back then instead of getting a cheesy image.

So, when he came with another movie, lots of people went to see it.

I wouldn't bet on Endgame becoming the highest grossing movie of all time just now. While it's an absolutely impressive opening weekend, it's only 100 Million Dollar more than Infinitiy War and that movie ended up almost 750 Million Dollar behind Avatar in the end. Everything is possible of course but nothing is guaranteed.

Guess most people here asking why Avatar got in that position never saw it in cinemas at that time right? While it's story is more or less average it has a cinematography which was and still is groundbreaking. No other movie used 3D like Avatar did and it accomplished something no other movie at that time was able to do - it forced the people into the cinemas - watching it on tv screens doesn't come close the slightest to what it is when watching it on big screens. That's why it was so high grossing. And maybe we get a similar experience next year when the second part will be released.

Probably more about the technology than actual movie. Like for an almost CGI movie, the quality still hold up pretty good despite the story is mediocre

Avatar was THE genuine cultural phenomenon of the last decade, the movie grossed $70M in it's open weekend and then legged out a 10x multiplier of $700M+ by the end of it's domestic box office run. Much in the same light as Endgame the movie was a crowd pleaser with technical aspects put to a scale audiences had never seen in film before. It was something everyone and their mother had to see. We've never seen a blockbuster perform like that since, not even Endgame could replicate that. Not that it would need to in order to surpass Avatar though, with it's larger opening Endgame would only need to perform less than half as well as Avatar in order to snatch that No.1 Global Box Office title.

Deserved!

I really want it to beat Avatar. The only reason why it smashed the box office was because of the 3D gimmick. No one remembers a single line from that movie. That's how lacking the story and writing themselves were.
