Why do people say Fancy isn't a musical shift for Twice?

Fancy might not be doing a complete 180, but it is definitely a 90 degree change from previous releases.  The biggest change is the darker melody during the verses.  Twice melodies are usually bright and cheerful so for them to go that dark is a pretty big deal, even if they brighten things up again during the pre-chorus.  The only other title track that doesn't have a cheerful melody is Likey, and even then Likey is more neutral in tone than dark.

just compare

imo, its not much a change due to lyrical content.

a tone might have shifted, but the backbone of it

hasn't moved much at all. just my opinion. :3

After this, JYP will force Twice back to their original concept just like SM did to Gfriend.

lol ?

I said this before but a lot of people for whatever reason can't comprehend more than 2 sounds/concepts

like everything is either bubbly and cute or dark and badass no in-between for them

like when have twice done ANYTHING close to disco pop ever lmfao??? anyway this title track/album is the exact direction I wanted them to take musically so I'm praying to god jihyo this is the start of their musical growth

It's not the first time imo just like BDZ, when the lisneter expecting a badass sound from the teaser but the songs come out still sounding bubbly, in the end it make people let down. For me BDZ and Fancy are still cute sounded songs.

If they really want a change they should do it like SNSD maybe, just like 'Oh' and 'Run Devil Run' era or 'Lion Heart' and 'You Think'. The group who can pulled out two different concept perfectly.

this. Fancy is NO DIFFERENT concept wise to their previous releases. It sounds very much cutesy for me. Here I was expecting their Gee -> Genie transformation but oh well, the song is a bop tho.

RV is the only one brave enough changing up things I guess
