Take the first aid kit with you, not saying something will happen, but better safe than sorry. Make sure your phones are charged (or have some charger with you) , if you are sleeping inside the car remember to lock the doors, take turns driving because it gets tiring, bring flashlights.

Make sure that the car is in good shape.

Make sure that you have more than enough money.

Never pick up strangers.

The car is not a safe. Don't leave valuables unattended.

Take what you need.

If you are going somewhere specifically choose the best route and look on the internet for places you may wish to stop at along the way.

Set some rules in advance so that you and your friend don't have any disagreements far from home.

Check that your car is in proper condition. Take your first aid kit, toilet paper, neck pillow, power battery for your phone. Stay in well lit places, and trust your gut. Approaching strangers isn't awlays a bad thing, but always be cautious.

The best road trip I went on was half away across the country for three weeks and it was amazing. We got lost a couple times, but we met some amazingly kind people, saw some great sights, got attacked by insects, had awesome encounters with animals, and even had a couple scares after an encounter with a state's militia and some huge strikes, but over all, one of the best experienes of my life.
