Police State That Delayed Response To Yoon Ji Oh’s Emergency Call Was Due To Equipment Misuse

Apr 23, 2019 by C. Hong

On April 23, SBS reported that the police had finished their investigation into why they did not immediately respond to Yoon Ji Oh’s emergency calls.

In March, Yoon Ji Oh created a petition requesting an explanation and apology from the police for failing to provide proper witness protection. She stated that she had pressed the call button on the smart watch given to her by the police for emergencies, but did not receive any reply for over 10 hours.

Dongjak Police Station, who is in charge of Yoon Ji Oh’s witness protection, issued an apology on March 31 and promised to conduct an investigation.

The smart watch is equipped with real-time location tracking and call functions, and emergency calls are automatically logged into the 112 emergency call system. In their official apology, the police confirmed that Yoon Ji Oh had initially activated the emergency call function on the watch at 5:55 a.m. KST on March 30 and activated it again two more times after that, but the calls were not logged into the 112 system. The police stated that they would be working with the company that created the smart watch to investigate why this was the case.

According to SBS’s new report, the smart watch company concluded as a result of their analysis that Yoon Ji Oh pressed the emergency call button for less than 1.5 seconds the first two times she called. This was not long enough to send the emergency signal to the system. The third time she called, she pressed the button for longer than 1.5 seconds, but pressed the power button at the same time and the call was canceled right away.

A source from the police stated, “There were no mechanical problems with the smart watch that was given to Ms. Yoon. When we gave her the smart watch last month, we explained to her how to use it.â€

TV Chosun also released a report that quoted a police source as saying that after checking the CCTV footage, they found no evidence of attempted trespassing in Yoon Ji Oh’s home. About the noise that Yoon Ji Oh reported hearing, the source stated, “The room is surrounded by cement. There is a septic tank that is running, so when the boiler comes on, you can hear a mechanical sound.â€

User errors are very common, HOWEVER the timing of this news + writer's allegations came right AFTER Yoon Ji Oh's interview. It's very suspicious. I would think that the police would have not only explained how to use the equipment but also conduct dry runs with Yoon Ji Oh to ensure that everything works properly. The excuses are too convenient though can never be 100% sure. I hope that Yoon Ji Oh responds.

very true user error is extremely common with just about anything people use, even people fuck up using their basic phones at times. As for the police a dry run should have be done, but lete face the reality of things law systems are huge and have too much shit todo the officers in charge probably had million other things to do that day and something like a demonstration can slip your mind, not everything is some conspiracy not everyone is the devil incarnate. As for the smart watch manufacturers i doubt they would lie THEY GAIN NOTHING by lying about it. A tech company making products like this will always get government contracts and even private security contracts and overseas contracts with other nations emergency services for devices like these think of the life alert system. So the company wouldn't benefit by covering it up. Also when she pressed it its very likely it can be user error, anyone can fuck that up when under stress and put into a dangerous situation, anyone who says otherwise is bullshit because things you think you do will change when that flight or fight response hits and that adrenaline dump gets going. This isn't something you can just train.

The safety smartwatch and safe house's purpose was to keep Yoon Ji Oh safe. Even if the police force is spread thin and have ample things to do, if they cannot spend a moment to go over the device (which is supposed to be her safety net) or it slips their mind then what does that say about their concern for her life? It's like "Pffft", her life doesn't matter.

I'm also questioning the timing of this news. If the product wasn't operated properly they would be able to find that out easily. Did they (safety smartwatch manufacturer and police) only reveal it now to make their case or save face because Yoon Ji Oh did the interview?

I agree with you that in stressful situations people often panic, and when people panic you can never tell how they'll react. Knowing this, you'd think that the manufacturer of the safety smartwatch consulted with experts who specialize in stress and/or emergency-related situations. The safety smartwatch that's out on the market must be the results of studies and test groups. The police endorses this safety smartwatch so it must do what it's supposed to do and does it well. But the fact is that electronics do fail. That is the reality of anything man-made. So if the safety smartwatch that was given to Yoon Ji Oh did fail, had the manufacturer owned up to it, it wouldn't be difficult to believe (I gave a defect a pass). Then again it may not look good for a company who manufacturers safety devices. But now if the safety smartwatch did fail and the manufacturer covered it up (or the police covered it up on their behalf) it adds to the conspiracies surrounding Jang Ja Yeon's case. I'm not someone who jumps onto conspiracies but something about all of this stinks.
