It’s not the first time BreatheHeavy has typed the words “Free Britney.†In 2008, shortly after Britney was placed in a conservatorship, which she still remains in today, BH publicly denounced the legal restraints she was under and championed the initiative… but to no avail. The pursuit put the site at risk of closure and created a rocky dynamic with Britney’s team since. I’ve come to understand that the conservatorship and her father, Jamie Spears, Britney’s conservator over her personal affairs, were instrumental in plucking the pop star out of a swirling vortex spiraling into oblivion. In the years that followed, the conservatorship played a pivotal role in keeping Britney away from potential people and substances that could derail her progress, however a lingering cloud of doubt grew as she distanced herself from her public troubles. The million dollar question: if a conservatorship, typically meant for people who are so incapacitated that they cannot function, then why can Britney Spears record albums, perform, make music videos and give interviews? And if she is in fact deemed so mentally unfit to manage her own life, than why is she continually thrust into the limelight? On one hand, fame, performing and stardom is all she’s ever known, and working could potentially provide structure and routine – key facets to maintaining stability (can you imagine how scary it would be to take away everything familiar?). There are elements of this we do not understand, nor is it our right to, so where do we go from here?

THE CLAIMS

Shocking new allegations aired on the latest episode of the BritneysGram podcast have rocked the world of Britney. The podcast, run by comedians Tess Barker and Barbara Gray, was originally a place to gab about Britney’s quirky Instagram posts, but it’s taken a turn. Instead of poking fun at our fav’s sparkly memes and sassy cat walks, it started shining a white hot spotlight on an aspect of Britney life that’s shrouded in mystery: the conservatorship. The show has a hotline where fans can call in and leave a voicemail, and they received one that’s got everybody talkin’.

They aired a voicemail from a man who claims to have worked as a paralegal at a legal office connected to Britney’s conservatorship. Barker and Gray say they have vetted this individual. They call him a “very, very credible source.â€

https://soundcloud.com/user-405122914-411166228/74-freebritney

The unidentified man offers a different explanation as to why Domination was cancelled, and claims Britney has been in a mental health facility since mid-January… against her will. It’s worth mentioning BreatheHeavy cannot confirm the allegations.

“What is happening is disturbing to say the least,†the voicemail begins. “Britney was in rehearsals for Domination. It came to Jamie Spears’ attention that Britney was not taking her medication as prescribed. She was missing a lot of doses and full on not taking them. They got her to the doctor, the doctor said, ‘OK if you don’t want these medications, let’s get you on a new one.’ Well, she refused to take the new one. So Jamie said either you take this medication or the show’s off and I’m pulling my support and you can’t do it. Britney did not follow Jamie’s instructions, and he was true to his word – he pulled the show. He said verbatim, ‘blame it on my illness,’ and that’s when we get the early January Instagram.â€

This of course conflicts with Britney’s Instagram post in which she says she had to postpone the show due to her father’s illness – his colon ruptured and he nearly died.

The voicemail continues: “Fast forward a couple days… Britney’s still not following through with her medication… She is seen with Sam [Asghari] driving. It’s a big rule that she broke. Britney has been in the mental facility since mid-January. Of course, the statement said she entered last week… it’s not true. She’s been in there since mid-January, and there is no timeline… there is no end in sight for this stay at this mental facility to end. She did not want to go… Elsewhere he said, “This was not a decision she made at all.â€

Barker and Gray’s source also shed light on the conservatorship’s early days.

“The conservatorship was supposed to end after the Circus Tour in 2009,†the source says. “The idea was: go on tour, show us you’re stable and well and that this conservatorship will help you regain custodial rights.â€

He goes on to say that Jamie Spears planned on filing a petition following the Circus Tour to end the conservatorship, and “when that didn’t happen… Britney had another sort of mental break.â€

Fans have thought for years that leading up to, and during the Femme Fatale era, Britney was not her typical self.

#FREEBRITNEY

BritneysGram created a #FreeBritney graphic, and stans swiftly began changing their profile photos to it. The hashtag even began trending on Twitter.

LYNNE SPEARS

Hours after the podcast was published, Britney’s mom Lynne posted a meme on Instagram that read: “When God’s warriors go down on their knees, the battle is not over; it has just begun.â€

One fan wrote in the comments section: “I really hope you are supporting Britney in trying to end this conservatorship. I really hope your ailing ex husband isn’t keeping your daughter somewhere against her will.â€

Lynne liked the comment, among many others.

JAMIE LYNN

Brit’s little sister is also in a difficult position in the #FreeBritney era. She hasn’t publicly spoken about Britney’s situation, but she did post an interesting meme in her Instagram stories on the same day that read: “they don’t deserve you, stay busy.â€

INSTAGRAM COMMENTS

The campaign began picking up momentum over the day, so much so that fans stormed Britney’s Instagram posts with the hashtag #FREEBRITNEY. Someone with access to Britney’s account muted the hashtag and began deleting fans’ comments.

LARRY RUDOLPH

Britney’s longtime manager, Larry Rudolph, was also mentioned by Mr. Voicemail. According to him, Rudolph played a major role in Britney’s latest mental health stay, and was even, according to the source, quoted in a closed-door meeting as saying “at the very least this will help with ticket revenue when we re-announce Vegas.â€

ADAM LEBER

Britney’s former manager, Adam Leber, is very aware of the podcast. He even released a statement about it. “Heard about this podcast. I Haven’t listened, but I haven’t worked with Britney in 2+ years and am not involved with her affairs. I wish her nothing but love…â€

THINGS TO CONSIDER

BritneysGram felt confident enough with their source to publicly claim some wild and salacious allegations. There are a couple of things to consider when deciding whether you want to believe them or not. For instance, why would this person risk getting entangled in a nasty lawsuit if they were the real deal? If he was a paralegal at a law office connected to Britney’s conservatorship, then we can assume he had employment at Andrew Wallet Law (the former law offices connected to Britney’s conservatorship). It can’t be that hard for people close to the situation to identify him and pursue legal action. There’s also the ethical element to all of this – a paralegal working on a case, whether in past or present, has an obligation to their client to withhold sensitive information from the public. However, it appears this person felt a moral obligation to act as a whistle blower. Or is making this up entirely.

Andrew Wallet acted as Britney’s conservator for more than a decade – he oversaw her financial handlings and claims to be instrumental in keeping her away from drugs and alcohol, however he recently resigned with haste only a few months after a judge approved his request for a raise in salary (~$35,000 per month).

According to documents obtained by The Blast, Wallet states, “The conservatorship is engaged in numerous ongoing business activities requiring immediate attention and it therefore is in the best interest of the conservatee that the acceptance of Wallet’s resignation and the issuance of amended letters of conservatorship of the estate occur immediately and without delay.â€

He adds, “Substantial detriment, irreparable harm and immediate danger will result to the conservatee and her estate if the relief requested herein in not granted on an ex parte basis.â€

There’s speculation that either Wallet knew a storm was coming and had to bow out before it consumed his professional life, or he witnessed something so terrible happening to Britney that he felt compelled to resign. It was originally reported Wallet had plans to retire, but it’s odd to announce a retirement shortly after getting a sizable pay increase.

LOOKING FORWARD

Ultimately, fans are rallying behind the #FreeBritney initiative because if Britney is in a circumstance against her will, than something needs to be done. However, it’s important to keep in mind that Britney is a very complex person. Stratospheric superstardom exacerbated her mental health issues, so extreme measures were put in place to make sure she stayed alive. Here we are more than 10 years later still questioning the use of the conservatorship. Is Britney in a mental health facility against her will? Is she being forced to take medication? Can Britney function without a conservatorship? Does she have anyone to turn to in the event she wants out of it? Should she be out of it? There are so many unanswered questions that surround Britney Spears, because her team’s approach is silence…. and it deafening.

As someone who is obviously not privy to Britney Spears actual private life I have mixed feelings about this. My mom is bipolar and when she doesn't take medication she spends crazy amounts of money and makes both poor very big decisions; she'll take her medication for a while improve, but then stop taking it because she starts to feel better. As someone who loves her I can understand wanting to be in a position to make her take medicine, because honestly-she's not herself without it(however there is not millions of dollars involved in our relationship).

Oh, I got really worried it was Sam Lufti she was hanging out with again...

I do wonder if it's her choice to keep performing.

It's also very difficult for family members of someone with severe mental illness. People wanna paint this certain type of picture when it's actually really difficult to get help for someone who does not want it. It's easy to be painted as the bad guy when they're not the ones seeing the full-on crazy.

Well if was on medication n refusing to take them. I can understand her dad. We don't know what Britney has but with bipolar, when my brother stopped taking it cause he felt he didn't need it no more it lead him to a severe downfall. He got very manic, very out of control. These chemicals change ur brain pattern n when u just stop it can be pretty dangerous.

And my brother had to be admitted against his will so he would hurt himself.

We don't know the full story but it looks like her dad is just making sure she is okay. If it was about money he would of made her do the tour. It's costing money having her in a facility.

I'm sorry but the source for this is literally just an anonymous tip to a Britney podcast hosted by two comedians. I don't think that is enough information to start harassing her family, friends and team. It's really irresponsible for people to start this 'movement' on so little information.

I do however, this her team are being abused and deserve to be called out. People should just try to keep to the facts rather than some of these rumours.

You're both right about what you've said about medication, but sadly since she is under a conservatorship control of her health care is not hers meaning that her father can admit her to rehab or get her to see a doctor who will give her medication (after what happened to Michael in 2009, we know the abuse of meds from doctors in show business is not uncommon).

Britney from 2008 to some point in 2010 was not medicated, or at least at the same level she has been in recent years (2010 - 2014). In 2008 during the Circus album she was lively and like herself, even if some elements were not up the same standard (i.e. her dancing) but that could have just been due to confidence or simply not training for years at that point. However, in 2010 Britney had another meltdown that people speculated was worse than what happened in 2007 as a result of being told that her temporary conservatorship was turned in to a lifetime conservatorship. In an attempt to calm her down, her boyfriend at the time was also made a conservator (which seems like a conflict of interest to me). Shortly after this, fans notice that her appearance change as well as her behaviour which is why many speculate she was under medication. This is why fans think it's sketchy, as she was able to promote an album, a greatest hits, 5 singles and a 97 date tour that grossed $131.8m but is suddenly medicated after she is given a lifetime conservatorship.

The amount of evidence about the supposed abuse of the conservatorship is... a lot. The article misses a lot of the key things. You have to remember that Britney is a multi-million dollar empire and that her dad makes 130k a year alongside a salary, so having the rights to her is also having all of that money in your control. Her team are abusing this conservatorship to make more money.

i was curious what the situation regarding conservatorship  was in 2008, i found some articles claiming its source from the court proeedings of 2012 Lutfi-Spears lawsuit proceedings, ,

"January 2008 Britney took "all or most" of 30 tablets of prescription amphetamines within a 36-hour period. She then locked herself in the bathroom with Jayden and refused to turn the child over to Federline, after which an ambulance was called and Britney ended up hospitalized at UCLA Medical Center in the wee hours of Jan. 4, 2008. She was put on a 72-hour psychiatric hold (a 5150, meaning she was deemed a [potential danger to herself or others)"https://www.eonline.com/uk/news/923501/taking-care-of-britney-spears-the-shocking-sequence-of-events-that-led-to-her-decade-long-conservatorship

"Spears was admitted to the hospital again on the morning of Jan. 31, and once more put on a 5150 hold. The next day, Feb. 1, 2008, a judge appointed Jamie temporary co-conservator of Britney's affairs"

Britney fought it legally but failed which in 2008 is understandable due to earlier incidents that year.

the article also claims she came to an agreement to make the conservatorship  permanent in october 2008.

i suspect inorder for her to prove she was stable and capable on her own to get back her kids, she had to agree to it and demonstrate she is stable, and that can take a long time, they assess you in long periods of time.

from everything i read it seems like the dad had good intentions, and the article says "To this day she still has a legal advocate who ensures the conservators are doing right by her."

a legal advocate is someone who is appointed by the court (independent) to look after your (Britney) interests.

and regarding her dad maybe forcing medication on her:

"Eardley's "well-pleaded allegations" do not present an issue of federal law, the filing states, adding that any charges on Eardley's part that Jamie Spears "supplements" his daughter's medication "disregards the fact that the Probate Court has not granted Mr. Spears medical powers and that medications therefore do not fall within the scope of the conservatorship."" (article link above). If she is currently in rehab she might of been sectioned again since they cant hold her without being sectioned.

but everyone does seem puzzled why in 2019 she is still conservatorship. I suspect she does have some form of mental illness, otherwise the courts wouldnt have held it in place so long, Britney seems to have been actively fighting against conservatorship .the judge denied her challenge in 2010.

It seems only the court can end the conservatorship. even if Britneys dad wanted to end it, only the courts can end it. If britney dad resigned as the conservator, the court will appoint someone else.- well thats would google researching said.

There are different types of conservatorships, and since Britney's files are sealed we don't know which one she has and what she can and cannot do. If she's under a certain type she can ask to get the conservatorship removed, in others she will need her conservator to initiate that, but the court always has the final say.

And you're right, the conservatorship was made permanent in late 2008 but that was because she was about to embark on her 'Circus Tour' and it made sense to keep her under it for the duration of the tour (and if it was temporary they would need regular hearings which would interrupt the tour). In 2010 she tried to get it removed, but the court said no which is when fans started to notice she acted different (i.e. more medicated). This is why people see it as an abuse as she agreed for the conservatorship due to the tour, not for any longer.

I guess for someone who isn't a Britney fan it's hard to see the alleged corruption, but as someone who has followed Britney for years (before and after the conservatorship) you notice a change in her. When she's in interviews media outlets often say she is the most protected interview subject they ever have with her team having final edit of any interview. In 2016 she talked about the conservatorship (just saying that it didn't let her release the music she wanted until her most recent album) and her team edited it out.

Also, that article (first one) you posted is sketchy to me. At some point last year, randomly multiple media outlets posted articles about Britney conservatorship with some even defending it. Then a few months later one of her conservators applied for a raise (and got it). Considering Britney's team has already been exposed for lying through the media in the last 6 months, I struggle to trust them anymore.

It's a big conspiracy and i'm sure a lot of it is fans who are overly protective, but I think there's some truth of people around her abusing her wealth under this conservatorship.
