I'm studying engineering (which gets a wildt reaction sometimes) so a 4 but my discipline is a bit obscure since it is new (maybe a 1-2?) Even for the subject, I want to get my PhD in, people who aren't involved in physics aren't entirely familiar with it.

spatial design, most people dont know what it is and honestly i never really know how to explain it either so i just say interior design/architecture but different

i guess most people that do anything in the creative field can relate that most people just ask "how u gonna get a job/make money" but i dont see it as disrespect

I'm a double Computer Science and Mathematics major in UT Austin. I'm going to talk about my majors in terms of relevance in my school and in general overall (so if I sound a little arrogant in this, I'm sorry, I honestly don't mean to).

Computer Science in UT is well-known not only nationwide, but internationally as well (we're apparently a Top 10 school in the US for Computer Science for graduate schools), and there are also well-known faculty there as well (Dijkstra, whom Dijkstra's algorithm is named after (I believe that he's the one who came up with this concept), was a UTCS professor). Also, not only that, but Computer Science is a growing field, especially Software Engineering/Development or in other words, the tech industry, because of Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, etc. which rely on a lot of software development, and the rise of technology which rely on software ofc (also, relatively high salary as well thanks to growing technology!). So Computer Science is definitely a 5.

Mathematics is less known and less stellar (in terms of teaching and recognition) in comparison with Computer Science in UT, but being part of the well known College of Natural Sciences in UT, it does have some prestige on its own. Also, with Mathematics as the foundation of well-known sciences such as Computer Science (fun fact, UT CS branched off from UT Mathematics department, so that's why it's under the College of Natural Sciences despite the nature of CS and much of Computer Science theory (especially algorithms) is based on math, especially probability and discrete math), Physics (quite obvious), Chemistry, Computational Biology, etc. Math has always been an important part of general education as well starting from elementary school (basic arithmetic) to college (calculus and probability), so it's pretty well known generally but not always people's favorites (some people love it; some people hate it), and not as heavily invested as other subjects or majors. Salaries for careers relating to Mathematics are okay at the least. So Mathematics is about a 4, maybe 3.5 to be precise.

I don't think it's super strange or rare so for first question I guess it would be a 3, but even if people now the name of the major it's very rare for people to actually now what someone that studies my career does. I think it's kind of respected or seen as something difficult but that's also because people hardly know what the major is about so they're automatically impressed.

3 and 4

Majored in Game development and UI/UX design.

Edit: Although people don’t have much idea about ui and ux they have a lot of respect when I mention game development and say how big it is right now. Mind you that only 2 colleges gives them as majors in my country. Usually, only people that are up-to-date to tech advancement and tech research that knows exactly what’s about.
