do you think kpop idols should "call out" their fans on toxic behaviour? what this toxic behaviour is?

edit: the other thing i can think about is the possessiveness and jealousy. but that's also imo requires an action, joint action of idols and management that normalizes open dating, and not words. and hell of an action it is tbh. idols will have to expose their partners to a lot of scrutiny and outright hate

Yeah totally and toxic behavior is when they are just annoying the shit out of everyone by being a negative person who keeps stirring shit abt stuff no one asked for instead of chill and have fun

i said i think it's an interesting discussion. if you are not interested feel free to exit jesus

yeah

obviously stuff like saesangs, stalking, finding out their phone numbers &harassing them should always be addressed. Because it's directly affecting their lives negatively.

I don't think they need to get involved with petty fanwar stuff though. They're above those types of issues and it just brings more attention to something that should have been ignored.

but extreme fans whose obsessive behaviour is not only detrimental to their own lives but lives of their idols and often crosses the line of the law are not perceptive to any rational argument. idol personally mentioning those people can have a negative effect and encourage them further(their idol not only knows they exist but talked about them, any attention is good). i would say such issues should be left to the management and authorities.

fair point

But I still think an idol should make it very clear that they are not okay with that type of behaviour.

Both authorities and the idols should be involved

The authorities to punish the stalkers/managers to blacklist them and the idols to denounce the behaviour and hopefully prevent other people becoming saesangs in the future.

Not really,

Sasaengs and obsessive people do anything from attention, and they don't care if the attention is bad, if their idols put shame on them, they will love it. I think the company is the one who should deal with it.

And fanwars, if someone thinks groups should scold fans, it's because you are spending too much time being in fanwars and seeing others in fanwars, it's stupid to even think about it imo, the idols are not their fans parents. Also people who usually say this, from what I've seen, are the dishonest ones who think that a group should call out x fandom and doesn't actually think other groups should do the same with their own problematic fandom, it's juts because they don't like certain fandom, not because they care about toxic behaviour.

Also in a lot of times I've seen people saying this because they want to get a free pass to bash a group without the group fans coming for them so yeah, it's just hypocrisy to me.

calling out twitter beef - no

calling out sasaengs and stuff that actively harm themselves and others around them and other fans - yes they should be able to.  but every time idols do so, they get criticized and attacked because "they signed up for this".  but then you have cases where sasaengs cause accidents and the like and the idols get criticized for that too.

No, being toxic is a personal choice and an idol is not responsible for the way their fans choose to behave.

If we are talking about sasaengs, then this is borderline criminal behavior so it should be dealt differently.

I disagree. Idols have huge influence on how their fans behave, and should be held responsible (to an extent).

Could you please give me an example of that influence?

I still think that no matter what anyone says or does, if I choose to behave in a toxic way, it will be no one else's fault but mine. I have seen people jump on hatewagons but when called out they put the blame on the instigator. In my eyes, they were the only ones responsible for their actions.

really depends on "toxic behavior".

I generally disagree.

1. Korean culture does not seem suit "call-out behaviour", like idols are not going to do this anyway because it goes against social norms to deal with things quietly unless they are VERY severe

2. lots of really awful behavior is not best dealt with by calling it out. Let's say a male fan starts being creepy with a female idol. If he is just a stupid guy who doesn't realize he's crossing the line, he should be told quietly. there's no need to "call out" a person who legitimately doesn't realize they're doing something wrong.

3. again, what is "toxic behavior" anyway? Is it just something that makes the idol uncomfortable? Is it something rude? Is it something creepy? Is it something that some people don't agree with? Not everyone agrees on what is "toxic" so we really have to be more precise here

4. Ideally, managers and other staff should be equipped to deal with anything very bothersome. that responsibility should not have to fall on the idol, both for their own health and safety as well as their image (which, again, is something you have to be concerned about as a Korean celebrity)

when I first got into kpop I was disappointed by idols' lack of autonomy in voicing their feelings and stuff. But the more i understand the culture and the industry, the more I realize why it's like this. I'm not saying I agree completely (I would rather hear my idols' honest thoughts all the time) but there are good reasons idols are asked to keep their mouths shut on a lot of topics. just putting that out there.

I want to be certain first. Are you saying idols don't have influence over their fans?

If they feel comfortable in doing so, then sure.

But I think it can do more harm than good with some of the crazier fans. In a lot of cases, they just want the attention of their idols, whether it's in a good or bad way. If those idols acknowledge them, they might feel proud of themselves for some weird reason and continue their behavior.
