so the live action Akira is still happening, because Hollywood is fucking obsessed in adapting it to Live Action.

Just a brief history of the Akira Live Action:

It was in development hell for over a decade. It went through multiple producers, directors, screenwriters, and many iterations. At one point, Tetsuo was changed to Travis and pretty much all the rising white actors were in talks to play the characters from Chris Evans, Zac Efron, Ezra Miller, Joseph Gordon Levitt, James Franco, everyone!

The earliest version of this wanted to set it in Manhattan instead of Tokyo Japan. They supposedly wanted Manhattan to be owned by the Japanese, so it's a fusion of japan and america. One of the writer believes that Akira is not a japanese story, but a universal story because according to him if it was a japanese story, it would have never been a hit outside japan. Riighht, Akira does not contain any social commentary and anything tied to japanese history and experience /s.

There was a another version that was leaked, also had whitewashed characters and set in America, that had a lot of 9/11 references, drastically changed the characters, made the characters a different stereotypical characters and Kei had misogynistic undertones when in the original, she was a strong and independent young woman.

The last director who also wanted to whitewashed the characters and came very close to making it, said: "Nobody’s interesting [in the anime], Tetsuo’s interesting because weird sh*t happens to him, and Kaneda is so two-dimensional. That’s part of the Japanese culture, they never have strong characters. They’re used as a way to move the other philosophy forward."

It's no wonder Anime live action Films has been shit, cause everyone that gets a hold of it never understand and respect it.

The synopsis of the Anime film and the Manga:

In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years after the nuking of the city, Kaneda, a bike gang leader, tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. He battles anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo's supernatural powers suddenly manifest. A final battle is fought in Tokyo Olympiad exposing the experiment's secrets.

1988: It is World War III. Tokyo is decimated by a mysterious black explosion, unmatched in magnitude.
2019: Fast forward 31 years. Neo-Tokyo, hastily built on the ruins of old Tokyo, is a sprawling cityscape of neon extravaganza. It is a fusion of towering skyscrapers and cutting-edge technology that is permeated through and through with an explosive, hyper-violent cocktail of biker gangs, poverty, and revolutionaries. In this derelict metropolis live Tetsuo Shima and Shoutarou Kaneda, two bikers who are the best of friends and the fiercest of rivals, despite being affiliated with the same gang. Desperate to prove himself as Kaneda's equal, Tetsuo unwittingly pulls a stunt that culminates in the awakening of a cryptic existence that threatens to change both the face of Neo-Tokyo and the lives of those who call the city their home—the awakening of a government secret simply known as Akira.

As of now, the current live action Akira will be produced by Leonardo Dicaprio, and the director will be Taika Waititi. It will begin shooting soon, and they revealed the synopsis:

"When a young man’s telekinesis is discovered by the military, he is taken in to be turned into a super weapon and his brother must race to save him before Manhattan is destroyed by his powers. Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother Tetsuo is abducted by Government agents lead by the Colonel. Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City 30 years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous, but after facing his brother again is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers. Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy. Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo’s mind, Kaneda clashes with the Colonel’s troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira, but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island as he did thirty years ago."

  • It will be set in Neo Manhattan instead of Neo Tokyo.
  • The names are still Kaneda and Tetsuo but they didn't reveal their last names.
  • Kei will be changed to Ky Reed, I'm guessing she wouldn't be Asian.
  • Kaneda will be a bar owner instead of a biker gang leader, they made him lame and they completely took out the biker gangs which arguably had one of the best iconic scene in the anime.

  • Kaneda and Tetsuo will not be gang members and will not have the classic naruto-sasuke/deku-kachan/goku-vegeta relationship, instead they'll be brothers because it's easier and because they're lazy. They wouldn't have to do any work in showing their relationship because changing them to brothers automatically do all the job.
  • They also completely shifting all the blame and the villain role to Akira, who taken control of Tetsuo's mind compared to the original where Tetsuo looked for Akira and he was not being controlled by Akira. They want to simplify the story.
  • It will be a closer adaptation of the anime film rather than the manga

No respect at all to the original and yet they still want to make it, expecting it to be good. Then act surprised when it turn shit and the fans hate it. All these people want is quick cash! None of them understand and want to understand the beauty of some of these anime that they so badly want to make money off.

OP I would seriously suggest doing a bit more research into this film because Taika Waititi has said quite a lot on the prospects of his potential Akira adaptation. I mean it's obvious you've compiled a lot but it's definitely skewing more towards one side.

Here's an excerpt from an interview he did 2 years ago on the topic:

"I haven’t really started to get my head around it yet. What I wanted to do was an adaptation of the books, ’cos a lot of people are like, ‘Don’t touch that film!’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not remaking the film, I want to go back to the book.’ A lot of the people freaking out haven’t even read the books, and there are six gigantic books to go through. It’s so rich. But (the anime) Akira is one of my favourite films; my mum took me to see it when I was 13 and it changed my life."

And another on the case of casting asian actors in these roles:

“[Casting] Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent,†he said. “Yeah, I’d probably want to take it a bit back more towards the books.â€

Honestly Taika Waititi is one of the last Directors you'd see whitewash a poc character, he's been incredibly outspoken on the topic in the past few years. Furthermore it seems if he gets his way he'd want to adapt the denser manga rather than the anime, which I think is respectful enough. Taika also has a good eye for color and scope so if all else fails the film will at least look good lol.

I already know all of this.

The changes are still there and Taika Waititi is aware of it, he also isn't more powerful than the studio. There's a post of this that had the new synopsis, all the people involved and it had taika waititi name. Ky Reed was not a thing in any of the previous versions.

We can only hope they saw the reactions and pay respect to the original before it's too late.

The only scenario where Taika Waititi's vision for this film isn't executed is if he chooses to walk away from it, Taika isn't attached to the film he's simply the most recently mentioned potential director. The 'changes' also popped up from a synopsis released by production weekly yesterday, who are generally entirely reputable in their reports, but have since removied that post.
