Did WG lay the foundation for kpop in the West? Sunmi: No, BTS.

So BTS really did pave the way?

She's right. Actually, WG (I like them and respect them very much, btw) not only didn't pave the way, but even closed the door for kpop groups in the west for several years, because their failure (they weren't really successful in US and lost their top status in Korea because of US promo) made other kpop companies too scared to take a risk and try again. There is a difference between 'being the first' and 'paving the way'. They didn't become a good example for others, they did the opposite thing.

And I remember very much how everyone considered their US adventure as a failure and believed kpop can't get a huge success in US... until 2017, when the whole story was re-writed by kpop fans and they became the kpop pioneers who did revolutionary thing, what a magic :hurr:

Cool smile.png

Hope this doesn't turn into 10+ page message, knowing OH lol

It shouldn't be (even after multiple 3rd gen idols have stated the same thing) but even a WG member herself saying this, people will still deny.

Props to what WG did because they were the first to brave the US market and they deserve respect for their efforts too but I as an ARMY would also appreciate it if people stop discrediting BTS with 2nd gen idol groups ALL the time.

Basically this

It’s sound mean but tons of history revisionists here. People don’t need to work too hard, just googling OH, Soompi, allkpop, ohmona comments back from 2013-2016 and it’s pretty match what you said.
