Fuji TV held a 4-hour special called the "100 protagonists of Heisei entertainment news" where they counted down the top entertainers of the Heisei era. The countdown was divided into 4 separate lists: one for male entertainers, one for female entertainers, one for comedians and one for foreign entertainers.'

The female entertainer list was topped by idol group AKB48

Since their formation in 2005 AKB has been credited with bringing idol groups back in fashion, starting the "Idol Warring Period" and almost single-handedly keeping the physical single market alive.

With more than 60 million records sold, the group recently became the second-best selling artist in Oricon history.

Hot on their heels was recently retired soloist Namie Amuro, a best-selling soloist whose fame transcended her music and who influenced the fashion of millions of women through more than 20 years.

Rounding up the top 5 are soloists Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru and Seiko Matsuda.

but no shiina ringo??? hmmm

I was surprised too. Maybe I made some translation error but I doubt it.

Maybe it's because she hasn't been around for that long.

Speaking of Mariah, she's 8th on the international list.

Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru truly ruled the entertainment industry from the late '90s to 2009. i hope the whole obsession thing over idols and Johnny's would end ASAP, it is so gimmicky and it doesn't focus on creating a great body of work.
