Action star Donnie Yen has used the phrase "the Chinese are not the sick men of Asia" in reel life, and now his wife has found the need to echo him in real life.

The Hong Kong actor, along with his wife Cissy Wang and daughter Jasmine Yen, attended a charity gala hosted by amfAR on Monday (March 25) where they were allegedly racially discriminated by the organiser.

"Tonight we experienced discrimination by an organisation from overseas. Prioritized and supported a charity but in return, we were shocked by how we were treated," Cissy wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday, which was accompanied by the hashtag the Chinese are not the sick men of Asia (中國人ä¸æ˜¯æ±äºžç—…夫).

According to Hong Kong media who interviewed Donnie and Cissy a day after the incident, the couple were still hopping mad with the way they were treated.

Cissy said that there was a communication breakdown between them and the organiser: "When my family was about to enter the venue, we were stopped by the staff who questioned us, 'the gala dinner has not yet started, why are you already inside?'

"The situation was a mess and there weren't ushers around. When we were finally introduced to the event organiser, his attitude upset me -- I felt insulted and disrespected."

She added that there was differential treatment between them and the Hollywood and Korean pop stars: "I think they simply look down on us Chinese".

The three left even before the gala dinner started because Cissy felt like if they stayed any longer, she would be setting a bad example for their children.

Cissy emphasised that they did not leave the gala dinner simply to create buzz for themselves.

Chinese actor Ray Lui, who was also invited to the gala dinner, revealed that he too left alongside his good friend Donnie.

"We went to support this event, and whilst I was making my way through the hordes of photographers at the red carpet into the premises, I saw Donnie and his wife storming out of there, and Donnie said 'bro, I'm leaving'.

"He (Donnie) told me that he was mad that he was despised by foreigners, and asked if I was leaving. Of course, I said yes -- as brothers, we have to stick together."

Donnie then complained to Ray about how "these foreigners are coming to our countries, asking us Chinese to support their event, but still despise us".

Ray also revealed that Donnie got rudely treated when his family asked for a change of seats at the gala dinner.

The organiser only complied with their request after the trio walked out of the venue but Donnie said he was not going back.

Other attendees of the annual amfAR gala dinner in Hong Kong included British-Malaysian actor Henry Golding, Malaysian-born actress Michelle Yeoh, Korean star Lay Zhang, supermodel Heidi Klum, and others.

We have requested for a comment from amfAR but they have yet to respond.

they left cause they couldn't change seats?ok

That's just one part of it.

“When my family was about to enter the venue, we were stopped by the staff who questioned us, ‘the gala dinner has not yet started, why are you already inside?’†she said, according to Asia One. “The situation was a mess and there weren’t ushers around. When we were finally introduced to the event organizer, his attitude upset me — I felt insulted and disrespected.â€

To make matters worse, the organizer allegedly treated Chinese celebrities differently from Hollywood and Korean stars.

“I think they simply look down on us Chinese,†Wang added.

No opinion

Right? And when Asia and the Asian-American community is rife with anti-black racism, too.

The same applies for racism from Black towards all Asian racial and ethnic groups

Last year during a very hot discussion around Wendy's "scandal" the member KorAm posted links with news related to violent crimes against Asian-Americans commited by Black Americans and racism is practically ignored as a cause while if the victims were Black the story would be different

Nobody is "fair and good" in this game

Tough situation. I don't think it's about looking down on Donnie or his wife, they were flavouring stars who they thought were more popular I mean the whole point of these celebrity events is that the stars get treated better.

If Donnie went to an event in Malaysia, he would get treated better than a lesser known Malaysian actor. Same way he probably got a better seat than a smaller HK actor at this event lol. Would he complain about that?

I think this type of stuff goes on all the time, it's not racist, it's fame based, the organisers just did it in a clumsy way and should have been better aware of Donnie's status in HK.

So, what happened specifically?

They were not allowed in when it hadn't started and couldn't change seats, but I don't see any example of how Hollywood stars were treated differently. Were they allowed in and were they allowed to change seats?

It can be discrimination, but it can also be stars getting mad because they are not allowed to do what nobody is allowed to do.

Donnie is super humble and not a diva, so I honestly don't think he was trying to get treated differently from everyone else. amfAR chose to hold it in HK, they probably shouldn't treated him like a second class citizen like they do to Chinese actors when working in Hollywood (this is something that was brought up by an insider as well).

Yeah i m not so sure about Donnie humbleness if he just went home just because of "bad spot" though. The event was made to support good cause. Sure celebrities went there because they want the publicity, the couture moment or even to catch a rich supporter. But still, it was made to support AIDS research so i dont think it s "humble" for him to smear it s name just because he doesnt get an A-list treatment.

By the way how bad is the spot when he was one of the event co-chairs ?

And if what he said was true, the staff was wrong and he should report it to her/his boss but it still not "racism", it s more like they dont know him enough to kiss the ground he walked on like how they do to those Hollywood A-lister. I bet if it was Michele Yeoh, jackie chan,Constance wu, the staffs would just nod their head to whatever they want

Idk why you're assuming things. The article clearly says it wasn't the seat change, it was the overall treatment. They asked for a seat change but then whoever they asked behaved rudely according to them, which is an example if the bad treatment. Other examples was not letting them in and no ushers. Not saying it's true or not, just pointing out you misunderstood the text.
