They are pushing the blame onto coast guard rescuers.

During the trial for the accused crew members for the negligence of passengers on the Sewol ferry that capsized on April 16, they argued it wasn’t their job to do rescue work.

The captain Lee Joon Seok and three crew members are currently being charged for homicide. Two other crew members are charged with abandoning ship, and nine others are facing negligence charges. They will be facing a maximum sentence of death and life in prison, respectively.

Due to not warning passengers of the over turning ship, it resulted in more than 300 deaths with only 172 survivors. The crew members claimed, once coast guard rescuers were at the scene it was their job, and their job was over.

Lawyer Im Ju Young told the court,

“The crew share the belief that they thought the coast guard should be fully capable of the rescue because there was a distress call and they arrived and they were the ones with professional skills and equipment.â€

During last week’s trial the defense lawyer Lee Kwang Jae for the captain said something similar,

“I think it is reasonable that rescue activities for the passengers should be done by the coast guard that comprehensively managed and monitored the accident and handled rescue-related equipment, rather than the crew members.â€

The crew and captain were caught on camera abandoning the ship while passengers were told to stay in their cabins while wearing life jackets.

Judge Lim Young Youb said the court will call on coast guard witnesses who reached the sinking ferry first for their testimony. They also plan to ask surviving students from Danwon High School for their testimony after they finish their term exams.

For further investigation, they will go to Incheon on June 30 to inspect other Sewol ships to gather evidence.
Many have commented that the crew are trying to put the blame on coast guards and it would not work to rid them of their accusation. Kim Hyun, a maritime lawyer said,

“The crew stayed on the bridge for about 40 minutes and didn’t do anything to rescue passengers although they knew the ship was going to sink. What crew members are claiming is hard to accept.â€

The trial will pick up on June 24. As the trial continues, police are still searching for the fugitive owner, Yoo Byung Un, who is said to be the cause of safety negligence and the cause of this nationwide tragedy.

Are they f*ckin' serious ? Gosh', I can't believe there are such trashy humans ... Lots of people died and it could have been avoided. It's just so unfair and frustrating.

"students from Danwon High School for their testimony after they finish their term exams."

I know they are still students and all but the tragedy happened not long ago but they can still study for their exams ? I know Korea put a lot of pressure on education but surviving such an event is just so big. How are they able to focus ?

rip to the poor kids and i hope the parents get through this. I feel for the parents so much tbh, the thoughts running through their head every day, they lost their children in a very horrific way. I really do hope justice gets served.

What has this become, a pissing contest? That game sure is insulting the memories of the dead people and their loved ones!

Offenders should be held responsible of their deeds instead of putting the blame in someone else.

Let the blame game begin....

everyone pushes the blame around. in the end, the biggest losers are very often the victims.

As always. What are we going to do, non-Koreans, to help them?

Honestly, not much. We are outsiders. I am just a nobody. I can only show empathy. I reckon we should focus more on the healing process of the survivors and the victims' families rather than focus on who is in the wrong. Punishment shouldn't be the priority at this point. Helping the victims move on should be.

For that reason I'm worried that the blame game puts us in the wrong track.

The victims' families and loved ones are in the position of direct help, while the rest can support too. In which way? We have to figure out and have the permission of those families. As you say, we can only show empathy, there is also this debate... is the debate going to solve something?

I think we all know by now that debates are never going to solve anything. But as of the general consensus amongst the Koreans is pretty clear, the large chunk of blame is on the crew.

Jesus fucking idiots

You are crews of the ferry ship

Your job is to provide services for the passengers and it's your duty to made them safe all the time

That's why you instructed them for emergency times and how to stay safe from dangerous situations

You have been given basic safety emergency training and you should have been doing that

How the fuck would the coast guard knows if your workplace is going to sink smdh
