From March to June, no historical period dramas will be allowed to air in China.

In a new restriction rule set by the National Radio and Television Administration (previously known as SARFT), historical period drama serials will not be allowed for broadcast on television or online between March and June. Dramas affected by this new broadcasting restriction includes many wuxia, fantasy, historical, time-travel, and palace-themed dramas that have been waiting for broadcast.

The Legend of White Snake <新白娘åä¼ å¥‡> starring Alan Yu (于朦胧) and Ju Jingyi (鞠婧祎), which was slated for a March 27 premiere, has already been pulled from broadcast. Highly anticipated upcoming historical dramas such asZhang Ziyi’s (ç« åæ€¡) debut TV drama Monarch Industry <江山故人>, Tang Wei’s (湯唯Empress of the Ming <大明皇妃·孙若微传>, Yang Mi’s (æ¨å¹‚Novoland: Pearl Eclipse <ä¹å·žÂ·æ–›ç å¤«äºº> and Dilireba’s (迪丽热巴Eternal Love: The Pillow Book <三生三世枕上书> are all affected.

Is there a reason Historical dramas aren't allowed to air? And for those months in particular?

I've read elsewhere that the ban may actually extend beyond those 2 months and shows/movies approved on a case by case basis.

The reason is more or less that the Communist government doesn't want to show Chinese people living under alternate governments in a positive light. So shows will need to be tweaked in order to be allowed to air that will likely mean extremely corrupt rulers, nobles, etc... and not have righteous rulers that people would like.

They also don't want dramas where a poor person rises up to be wealthy and lives a luxury lifestyle because they want the masses to believe that being a cog in the machine is the way that they should live. (Even though the ruling party lives luxuriously)

That seems so shady.

I've read on many weibo's accounts  it's because this year is the 70th year of the Communist revolution so too many dramas related to the issue will be released to celebrate the moment

It's not big deal for me because I'm tired of these types of dramas with 55+episodes

There are only 3 dramas of these kinds i'm anciticipating

Sword Dynasty is a web drama by IQIYI without any rumored date of release yet

Novoland Eagle Flag which is supposed to go on air in June according to many weibo's entertainment accounts

Listening Snow Tower, without any rumored date of release too, all the dramas of the company are waiting in the dungeon to go on air, few are waiting for 2+ years already

Guys, it seems that they have removed the ban after strong reactions. See link: http://m.weibo.cn/3704673325/HmITfvduB?from=page_1005053704673325_profile&wvr=6&mod=weibotime&type=comment&jumpfrom=weibocom&from=page_1005053704673325_profile&wvr=6&mod=weibotime&type=comment#_rnd1553599484705

Starting from April, historical dramas will be allowed to air, but will need special permissions from authorities on every 15th of the month.

As somebody here mentioned, Legend of The White Snake just got an air date, so let’s see and hope this is the case.

I knew it. Chinese people love their period dramas too much to let this slide

I guess the Mo Dao Zu Shi live action (The Untamed) is getting pushed back too. I knew something was up, it is supposed to come out in Q2 but everything is eerily quiet around it. The dubbing was finished in January and we only know that because of someone who was working on it. I am bummed rn, I've been waiting for this drama for so long, at least they should give us a promo pic or something, it's been like half a year since we got something.

Fyi, å¤è£…剧 is not limited to historical period dramas. It's basically all "costume dramas" so yes xianxia is included in that.

Anyhow, since there is no ban anymore it's fine. A couple of months ban isn't a big deal either tbh. Just watch other stuff in the meantime.

I am not super familiar with how the c drama world works but don't those dramas that already had an air date will get pushed back and pile up? It must be hard to find a free time slot. My point is, do we really talk about a few months delay only?

Their most popular dramas are all historical period ones, what on earth were they thinking? LOL

Internationally, maybe. In recent years though, the most popular dramas in China are modern ones including In The Name of the People, Ode To Joy and All Is Well (the current most popular drama). FYI, no dramas have broken In The Name of the People's record yet (it aired in 2017-2018).

Yes, I've seen a lot of clips from All Is Well, especially Guo Jing Fei's (who seems like an ass in the drama..although I don't know the contexts). I think I'm going to watch it later just to find out what's happening.

I don't know how it works either but I guess as long as you have the right connections they can find a way to squeeze it in or all dramas get their air dates pushed back to be fair. Even though it's on TV it's not like a drama has to be aired at a certain period.

As a final solution they could choose to air it online instead.
