ABANDONED FOREIGN BABIES INCREASE IN KOREA

Hope all the babies will find a loving family!

An increasing amount of foreign babies are being abandoned or put up for adoption in Korea. Pastor Kim Hae Sung said many foreign babies are put up for adoption due to the fact that the government doesn’t support babies whose parents are foreigners.

“one of the side effects of the growing migrant worker populationâ€

If the baby isn’t born from citizen parents or a married couple, the baby would not get state health coverage and cannot enter public schools. So the only way the baby can survive in Korea is to be a registered Korean in order to have the chance to be adopted by overseas couples or sent to an orphanage.

A church in southern Seoul called the Joosarang, had created a “baby box†for parents or mothers to leave their baby in if they don’t want their child. Once they place the baby inside, they ring a bell so staff members are aware a baby has been abandoned.

The babies will then be transferred to childcare facilities. After six months if their parents don’t come back for them, they will be registered as Korean citizens. Once that process takes place, all information about their foreign parents are deleted.

The “baby box†at the church has been in effect since 2009. Similar systems are used in 19 other countries including Japan and Germany.

The church has about 400 babies so far, and 10 of them were foreign babies. They have also been getting many inquiries from migrant workers on putting their baby up for adoption. Pastor Kim said,

“There are no statistics on the number of foreign babies born out of wedlock and abandoned, because no government agency or adoption group wants to be responsible for them.â€

Korean laws concerning foreigners are really too strict. A baby born in Korea to foreigners cannot go to school. or get health coverage? They should have it that any child with a permanent address in Korea can at least go to school. This is putting pressure on these families to abandon their kids so they can have a better life.

10? lol

wow?

400 is sad, though.

Yeah the article first made it seem like all the abandoned babies would be foreign babies, yet not even 5% are....

400 is a lot though for one orphanage to handle in such a small amount of time.

this is an absurd. The babies were born in Korea regardless of their parents being married or korean citizens and they should have access to education and health care as the other citizens. There's not much to hope for when the law discriminate people like that.

most countries in the world do not support dwellers who aren't citizens. the problem is why the baby born in the country doesn't get citizenship.

Some countries use the territoral criteria to give citizenship, I think that's the most common method. But other countries only consider citizens the people who were born in their territory and/or have descendance. It seems like Skorea adopts the most strict system.

But to deny public education and the minimun of health care kind of shocks me because even if the Government doesn't encourage the foreigners or tourists, they should have access to the minimum of rights at least. That's how I think.

it will be a big burden on the country's budget. every country have to privilege its citizens. will you say the same if your govt supports aliens and the welfare you receive is worse? besides, what is the minimum? it's a huge question what is the minimum for healthcare? will expensive surgeries and pills be included?

and about the education. the cost is higher as the standard is higher. it will cost a lot to support the education for a child if the standard is high. and in the country where the standard is low, the money is needed to provide better education for the citizen.

the citizenship can also be  a big issue, thailand won't grant citizenship to the child of aliens born in the country and resulting thousands of no nationality residents in the country. the state cannot exile them to their motherland 'cos they are citizens of no country. they also unofficially using state resources. many public hospitals are in financial crises because they can't refuse to treat foreign patients for the sake of humanity and the govt doesn't and is unable to support the healthcare for these patients. hospital directors have to spare resources meant for thai patients to these aliens and thai patients get poorer services.

Don't like the baby box idea. It encourages irresponsible parents to dump their kids when the tough gets going.surely there are better ways to handle this issue. Like get to the root of the problem. Which is to give improved rights to these foreign babies.

on one side it's horrible these baby boxes exist where people can abandon their children while they don't need to feel much of responsibility, but some people's conditions are hell, especially if the country won't support their children, just because they are foreign. On the other hand, in my country, whole foreign families move here and live off our taxes even better than our citizens...
