TWICE To Become Best Selling Korean Girl Group 143K Needed.

TL;DR: They will have the most Group albums sold on May 9th.

Now you guys already know I make these threads a head of time for a few reasons.

To let Onces know where TWICE is on albums and also to prep people for a record that is about to be stolen.

Just want to make this thread to give Onces a bit of information since when TWICE manages to get this record

there will be tons of backlash, hate, and lies spread to downplay or straight up deny the facts. I will address them in this thread so that you can come back to this thread and figure things out.

Here will be some of the main complaints or downplays about this record.

Downplay: Well they have 10 releases a year so of course they would snatch

Answer: TWICE will actually be the best selling with their 20 Album released. Eight less releases than the group that currently holds the number one spot.

Downplay: But photocards and versions?

Answer: TWICE admittedly does have more versions of their Korean discography on average. But even accounting for that. They never released more than 3/4 versions of an album and even versions can't boost sales as much as people will claim. Many groups have released 10 - 16 versions of an album and can't even hit TWICE's numbers. Extra Versions =/= 8 New Releases. Also first place as 62+ Versions while TWICE would only have 52 versions when they surpass.

Downplay: Well girl groups are selling better compared to the past.

Answer: While that is true that low and mid tier girl groups have gotten a boost that has not been the case for top tier Girl Groups. Boy Groups are the hones whose whole entire tiers have received a boost that allowed them to rival and surpass their 1st and 2nd Gen counterparts. Theoretically if TWICE was selling 500 ~ 750K per album then I would agree to this statement but they aren't. Twice's numbers are near identical to first places numbers at their peak. If anything TWICE should be selling less consider they are popular in the digital era.

Downplay: What about sub units or solos?

Answer: The moral of the story is that if you need to add non-group releases to bolster or inflate numbers it already shows that TWICE won. This is group albums. Adding sub units and solo's and trying to claim it as a Group release honestly is purposefully misleading. We do not add Destiny Child's sales to Beyonces total or vice versa. We do not add AKB48's sales to any of the girls who go solo or vice versa. So why would it be fair to do it now? Makes no sense and it's only delaying the inevitable. Since even if sub units and solo's were allowed it would only take TWICE two more releases and by Mid July they'd have the record of beating out the group, solo, and sub units sales.

Downplay: What about DVDs?

Answer: That's simply physical not Albums. But even with those added it gives you up until years end before that record is gone too. And it would of been Twices group album sales vs Group + DVD sales. More of a sting.

Downplay: What about Oricon?

Answer:  Now this is the most controversial one that tends to ruffle a lot of feathers. Now the justification for this is "Gaon wouldn't have counted it because it was distributed and shipped in Japan by a non Korean distributor. Thus Gaon wouldn't know" That comes down into interpretation. If you believe that Gaon counts all albums that are shipped within any country such as if you buy an album at Tower records in Japan it's still counted. If Orchid supplies TWICE's albums at your target Gaon has already counted the album then, no the excuse doesn't hold up. If you believe the opposite then they do. This basically comes down to beliefs. Technically if the excuse is the distributor, then that means TWICE's Oricon sales could be stacked as well. And well the end result is the exact same anyways.

Well that's basically all I had to really say about the topic. I hope Onces will remember this. Since we will have a large shit storm on our hands and all types of slander towards TWICE will be thrown on various websites.

GO TWICE! FIGHTING

Congrats ahead of time to Twice, this has been coming for a while and in such a quick time and few releases, really it's blowing all kind of records out of the water.

Let anyone who wants to make excuses for it, if it makes it easier for them to choke down go right ahead.

I never know why people use multiple versions as an excuse to downplay the success of a group

It always sounds funny for me, because I never ordered more than 1 version of any album, and I'm sure that many fans are like me

Twice will get that record, April comeback is coming :)

Ended Girls' Generation

I don't think so.

Stream this bop from the most talented kpop queen!

Also, my "ended" group is about to reach 100M views 11 years after their debut on their newest song.

This is entirely false. The ENTIRE industry has experienced a boost in album sales.

Lowest selling album of 2018 Top 100 - 45k

Lowest selling album of 2017 Top 100 - 33k

Lowest selling album of 2016 Top 100 - 21k

Lowest selling album of 2015 Top 100 - 13k

Lowest selling album of 2014 Top 100 - 15k

Lowest selling album of 2013 Top 100 - 14k

Lowest selling album of 2012 Top 100 - 15k

Lowest selling album of 2011 Top 100 - 16k

Towards the end of 2nd generation, when Kpop began to get even more popular internationally, the market began to grow even more causing the entire industry to benefit. It's a little absurd to say everyone benefitted "Except Top Tier girl groups" to try and make it seem like TWICE didn't receive the same benefit every other group did.

In 2011: 12 albums sold more than 100k; 4 albums sold more than 200k; 2 albums sold more than 300k; 0 sold more than 400k

In 2018: 46 albums sold more than 100k; 22 albums sold more than 200k; 16 albums sold more than 300k; 7 sold more than 400k

Like it's ridiculous to pretend TWICE has not benefited like everyone else lmao.

You can't say TWICE didn't benefit just because their sales are similar to SNSD. SNSD had a much bigger peak in Korea. They topped gallup for years by a wide margin, have been noted as the most legendary girl group to ever come from SK, etc. Like... why are people acting like it would be easy to surpass them under the same circumstances?

It's fine that TWICE will surpass their album sales, but to try and act like they didn't benefit from the industry growing as compared to SNSD's peak is...laughable.

I think people don't realize how much album sales have grown in the last 5 years. Twice is still doing incredible but back in the day it was really difficult for K-pop groups to sell. Now you have izone selling so much on debut. It's crazy.

The context your missing with those numbers is the boy group vs girl group divide. I think it's true to some degree that the industry's growth has helped Twice, but all of the 400k+ groups are boy bands. The ceiling on boybands has been blown off compared to 2nd Gen, with BTS's numbers being frankly ridiculous. But there just hasn't been the same level of growth of the girl group side.

The top boy bands are selling like 2-4x more than the previous generation. The top girl groups are not. It's still 300k-400k for the top girl group.

My theory is that international GG fans just don't buy albums in large enough quantities to match the Kfans but ifans of boy bands do.
