if you don't believe in Karma

From what I recall from studying Religious Education in school and college, suffering is often viewed by religious people as testing of faith. This is straight from my class notes: "Suffering allows human beings to develop admirable qualities such as love and courage", "Extreme suffering produces virtues such as courage and self-sacrifice". Now, I don't know if I personally believe this but I would assume that some people do.

For me attributing everything to a god or some karma law would be a very simplistic answer and it's an explanation that doesn't satisfy me. So I don't think there has to be a (single) reason to 'suffering' and stuff and it's more something multifactorial or more similar to chance, chaos, entropy, etc.
