As “Captain Marvel†continues to rule the box office, its studio is making moves that offer glimpses into what appears to be the much more inclusive future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On Wednesday it was revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped to direct “Shang-Chi,†Marvel Studios’ first movie to focus on a superhero of Asian descent. The news was first reported by Deadline.

Cretton is best known for writing and directing â€œShort Term 12,†a film starring Brie Larsonas a young woman who works at a group home. He is currently working with Larson and fellow MCU actor Michael B. Jordan on “Just Mercy,†a movie about a civil rights defense attorney who takes on the case of a death-row inmate.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is a martial arts expert sometimes referred to as the “Master of Kung Fu.†Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi first appeared in December 1973’s “Special Marvel Edition†No. 15.

He was initially introduced as the son of the villain Fu Manchu and unaware that his father was actually evil, although in true comics fashion his parentage has been altered a bit in the years since.

It was previously announced that Chinese American writer Dave Callaham would be penning the script for “Shang-Chi.†Callahan’s superhero credentials include co-writing Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Wonder Woman 1984†with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns, as well as writing the script for â€œSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.â€

Part of Callahan’s task will be to modernize Shang-Chi and his story to free him from past racist tropes.

Marvel is reportedly hoping “Shang-Chi†will follow in “Black Panther’s†successful footsteps by telling a story tackling Asian and Asian American themes with Asian and Asian American talent both behind and in front of the camera.

Everybody will disagree but I keep thinking the current state of the avenger and the young age of petter parker in the mcu would be a perfect opportunity to introduce some of the young avengers.

OMFG THIS IS LITERALLY ONE OF MY FAVOORITE MOVIES. I am beyond excited just for this credit alone istg. If anyone hasn't seen Short Term 12 I heavily recommend it! (Especially those who want insight into children who are living in programs and/or other strenuous situations)

as the son of the villain Fu Manchu

step 1. Don't have father named Fu Manchu.

hopefully they change it like they did with M'Baku, originally Man-Ape.

Since Shang-Chi is given the title of being a "master of Kung Fu," they better not get some actor who needs a stunt double for martial arts scenes. Because after all, this guy is Bruce Lee if he were a super hero.

For me, it would really be disappointing to see some Marvel Studios cast an actor representing this role who can't produce the fight scenes using only himself.

But unfortunately, not everyone is Tom Cruise and Jackie Chan when it comes to avoidance of stunt doubles.

And not everyone is Donnie Yen when it comes to brilliant stage combat.

Hmm. I would agree with introducing some particular young Avengers even though Peter Parker doesn't belong with them. I would NOT introduce Miles Morales since it would be waaaay to early to do such a thing. Stature, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), some form of Iron Lad (Harley) if it is decided to pass the Iron Man torch to another character, and I don't really know who else.

they're just not gonna like use that title and actual chinese culture only for nothing, pretty sure whoever who'll gonna play him would certainly be good at combat  and martial arts. That's on the lock as the major requirement other than being of a Chinese descent.

The name itself is so cringy like they couldn't even be bothered to look into names and just anyhow threw one together. I wouldn't be surprised if that was what actually happened

Yeah of course they won't use that title. It's gonna be difficult take on a particular Asian culture if that's what they're intending to do.
