I have never worn makeup before and I want to start

Learn your skin type first; it’ll make all the difference in choosing waterproof mascara or regular mascara. For example, if you have oily eyelids, regular mascara might make you look like a raccoon.

Eyeliner can be difficult for some people to get the hang of... speaking only from personal experience, liquid was what was easiest for me in the beginning.

eyebrows frame your face, so if you have light (typically south-east/east Asian) like me lol, I’d encourage you to play around w that too :-)

Good luck and have fun!

i'll give you the realest advice.

1. high end makeup is kind of a scam. people will rave to you about mac and benefit and tarte and smashbox and whatnot but you really don't need pricey makeup. you should absolutely start off with inexpensive stuff. if you want to give pricey stuff a try, feel free, but you sincerely don't need it.

unless you have sensitive skin. then your skin might be picky about products, you'll have to discover this on your own though.

2. eyeliner just takes a ton of practice. this is another reason to start with inexpensive cosmetics, so you can do lots of practice on your own without worrying about wasting the product. it's hard at first (especially liquid liner) but don't get discouraged! it really just takes practice

3. mascara should be replaced every few months because there is a risk of bacteria breeding in the tube if it gets too warm or wet. there's bacteria all over everything anyway, but it's a concern when it comes to mascara because you really don't want to get pinkeye!

4. youtube beauty gurus and instagram makeup gurus pretty much all use filters to make their skin look smooth and pretty on camera. they will rave about this foundation and that powder and concealer and all these products but don't get sucked in just on a couple good reviews- the filter is working harder for their skin than the makeup. you can still try whatever skin products you want but if it doesn't look the same on you as it does on a beauty guru- it's not you! their skin doesn't look that way in real life.

5. there is no right and wrong way to do makeup. if you do your makeup really weirdly or something, people might judge you, but it doesn't mean you did it wrong. it's totally okay to have your own style, don't let anyone tell you that the way you're doing it is wrong. it might not be flattering, but makeup is art and all art is okay even if it's not flattering! if you like the way your makeup looks, then it is good.

edit: oh also, be good about taking your makeup off before you sleep, especially eye makeup! you can use regular makeup remover, or coconut oil. coconut oil works really well for removing makeup, just rub it into your face and it will pretty much all wipe right off.

I'd say don't spend a lot of money on high-end products (unless you have sensitive skin) and start out with affordable drug store makeup products. Also, make sure you know your shade for foundation. If you're not sure you can go to makeup places like Sephora or just ask any of your friend who is into makeup for help.

Try the basic makeup and cheaper products. Foundation, concealer, blush on, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, lipstick, compact/loose powder. Although I use my foundation as concealer and sometimes lipstick as blush on and eye shadow.

I prefer to have proper skin care routine than makeup first. Serums, moisturizer, that kind of things.

And of course eyebrows pencil/whatever. One of the most important makeup thing, imo.

nooo don't say that, I'm scared now lol! What about natural makeup?

I've been looking at RMS beauty lately, they have promising ingredients.

Say goodbye to your beautiful skin.

But go light, the more dependent you become with heavy makeup, the more your natural bare face will start looking dead or breakout more.

Natural makeup should be fine but the issue ultimately comes down to cleaning your face really well afterwards. I'd invest in some really good cleaners/oils and possibly a motorized face scrubber/brush because it's extremely hard to get that shit out of your pores. And even if your face feels extremely clean, you can't get always get it all out 100% percent with a normal face wash and scrub routine. But otherwise, natural bb creams and water based foundation should minimize that stuff.

Honestly, I’ve never had any issues with my skin after using makeup (ie drying, acne, discolouration) but I do wash my makeup off every night. I also use moisturizer everyday, and tbh sunblock/sunscreen only when it’s sunny or when it’s snowed.

off topic but what type of product should u get to minimise dark circles under eyes? I tried bb cream/sunscreen hybrid but it didn't do much warstarplz.png

I get dark circles from lack of sleep or when I’m sick. If I look haggard af, I’ll use a salmon-coloured correcter, then concealer, then baking powder on top.

Isn't coconut oil disaster for your skin? It just sits on top of your pores, which can lead to clogging

Isn't coconut oil disaster for your skin? It just sits on top of your pores, which can lead to clogging

After my extensive 10 minute google research lol, it looks like its bad for acne prone skin but great for others.  I'd only use that product as a concealer anyway since my face is clear minus dark eye bags, but  yeah if you have acne prone skin I wouldn't be comfortable using it as a foundation or even as a  spot concealer on areas like the t-zone.  For the undereyes it should be perfect since it supposedly has antioxidant properties that decreases wrinkles.

nope, i don't know what makes it different but something about coconut oil makes it different from other oils- it somehow isn't... oily?

most people don't have any problems with it as a moisturizer but i'm sure some people do react to it. if you've never tried it, you should see if it works for you. i avoided it for a long time because the idea of putting tons of oil on my face just sounded like a bad idea, but it's improved my skin.

usually i put it on at night and then lightly wash my face in the morning as usual. the only reason i've stopped is because it would sometimes get in my bangs, which is just ugly lol
