Marvel Executive Says The World Is Ready For A Gay Superhero In The MCU

It’s safe to say that Marvel and Disney are moving full steam ahead in their plans to diversify their films. Last year saw Black Panther, their first film will a primarily Black cast smash all kind of records and even go on to become the MCU‘s first Oscar Winner and now this year we have Captain Marvel â€“ the franchise’s first film with a female lead. But as I said, the studio seem to have no plans to slow down in this capacity with a top executive revealing that we may soon be seeing our first LGBTQ superhero.

The comment comes from Marvel’s Production Chief, Victoria Alonso who in an interview with Variety at the premiere of Captain Marvel earlier this week explained that ‘The World is Ready’ for its first gay superhero.

The reason that the subject was brought up with Alonso relates to a recent report that the studio was looking to cast a gay actor as the lead of their upcoming film based on Jack Kirby’s classic comic series The Eternals.

She was first asked about a gay superhero appearing in the MCU, and said:

“The world is ready, the world is ready.â€

Whilst Alonso doesn’t specifically confirm the rumor, you can’t really say she was denying it either, simply telling the Variety reporter:

“We are going to cast the best ‘Eternals’ cast that we can and when we’re ready to announce it we promise you we will.â€

She also went on to further elaborate the importance of diversity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, explaining.

“I’m so passionate about this I’ve got to tell you. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.â€

This new direction for the franchise is certainly exciting for the franchise, and it will be interesting to see what will be coming for the franchise. In terms of what is (rumored to be) on the horizon, we have what will be the second film with a female lead in the form of the long awaited Black Widow film, The Eternals with potentially the first gay lead and Shang-Chi, which is set to set to feature the franchise’s first Asian lead. This being on top of the recently confirmed Black Panther sequel and the presumed sequel to Captain Marvel. It’s definitely an interesting time for the franchise.

great! Though if they just put them there as a token character with zero plot development unsure.png

I'd rather a well rounded and well thought out character than a character that is just there and does nothing...

The Eternals with potentially the first gay lead

ffs the world isnt ready for a "Gay super hero"

what the world wants is a great super hero! now assume that this super hero happens to be gay, but it's not the reason the movie is made, it's not a movie made for the purpose of "having a gay super hero" but rather just like everyone else, only instead of a "wife" or "girlfriend" it's a boyfriend [or reversed it it's a female super hero of course]. and this, wait don't be to shocked ISNT the main fucking point of the movie, in fact it's not dragged out, over exaggerated or pointed out at every fucking possible point.

just a super hero, an amazing person, who happens to be gay [not the offensive stereotype either]

[ note: this is fact for all LGBT+ not just gay ]

It isn't the first superhero in the world. It would be the first gay superhero in Hollywood probably, but there have been superheros from LGBT backgrounds made in other parts of the world.

Exactly. These type of "representation" movies forget to have a good script or good actors

The news is great and all but I just hope they don’t make it seem like the only thing special about this superhero is the fact that he’s gay and just make the whole film focus primarily on his sexuality as a form of ‘representation’. I feel like that would only deviate from the purpose of the movie which is just about another superhero.

but when are we gonna get our first non-binary attack helicopter superhero???

You sound like you got a problem with a a super hero that's gay... that attack helicopter joke is very right wing edge lord of you and you better not be a straight guy to talk like that...

I hope Marvel is aware that they'll need more than a gay actor to pull this off. The staff behind their LGBT superhero better not be mostly straight allies or we'll end up having what they think LGBT people want, meaning great risk of not being a compelling character that LGBT folks can relate to. So, here's to hoping they'll care about it on a deeper level.

Any idea of who's going to be their gay superhero?

idk who in the Eternals theyll changed to be a gay character but the only possible one would be Cersei but shes more bi than anything. Unless it's a Male character then idk.

my only problem with this is that I feel like theyre doing this to makeup for the mistake of deleting a scene where Valkyrie kissing a girl.

Whoever they release, I hope the character is like Raymond Holt, meaning an interesting character first and foremost who happens to be gay, and that being gay is not irrelevant in his lives, but not the only thing about him. He is stoic, hardworking, way too professional compared the people he hangs out with, a father to Jake who never grew up with one, and that's what makes him so great to watch. I'm sick with gay characters whose only personality is being gay, everything revolves around them being gay, and they have nothing else interesting about them. Give us nuanced gay characters like Raymond Holt, I'm tired of stereotypes.

I'm placing my vote now, give us Young Avengers!

They're a group of young, racially diverse newbie heroes that features a couple of Marvel's most popular LGBT+ characters, and one of Marvel's most popular gay relationships.

An adaptation has been rumored for years now, Kevin Feige talked about it a couple weeks ago, the Russo Bro's said they'd be interested in directing, and Ryan Coogler originally wanted to introduce some of the characters in Black Panther.

I can see Hollywood being hesitant because they have a thing against portraying teenagers as generally capable and intelligent people. But with the massive Box Office success of films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel one would hope Disney has the balls to just go for it.
