They're not really comparable to any kpop group. But if you were to compare them, then consider them like a mix of BTS or EXO, but the members are also top actors and TV personalities.

They are no 1 now, you will frequently hear politicians or newspersons calling them national boy group although they are all pushing towards 40s. They have their faces plastered in japanese air lines planes and you will see and hear them everywhere

 

I dont think I can compare to a kpop group since they debuted in 1999, and each member is active in multiple platforms. and has several hit movies and dramas. They also have 2 variety shows every week now, you can check them out

Mostly big in their own country. That's where they have the most impact.

 

There's no Kpop group that's really comparable, since Kpop is more global. They can't depend mostly on the domestic market since Korea can't support them financially alone.

 

Snsd and Big bang probably have the most public recognition in Korea. Still don't compare to Arashi in Japan.

If i.o.i and W1 were permanent and mostly promoted in Korea, maybe they could of had potential.

But they dont need to promote abroad anymore so sadly i fans cannot see them LIVE except for their 10th anniversary where they brought millions to Hawaii by having a concert there. 

 

In fact Arashi Korean fans are the first subbers of any of their videos. If they decided to promote in Asia or even release some of their copyrighted content outside Japan, we will see the zombie fans flocking to them.

As Rene has said above, their biggest fanbases outside of Japan are probably in Korea and Taiwan (and China too). You can find subbed Arashi videos in Korean within 30 minutes-1 hour after a show was done airing on TV, depending on the length of the broadcast. That's basically much faster than many other Kpop groups even in their own country.

 

They have Korean fans who never fails to watch their concerts in Japan even if it means fighting with 2 million more people in the fanclub. They have overseas fans who move to Japan to work just for them. And again, they're a Japanese group that could cripple an airport in South Korea if they want to, and historically they have.

Yea even in Japan. A mid-tier group/non-relevant can hold fanmeets and huge concerts in Japan.

Since Arashi was mostly in Japan there no real objective way of measuring their popularity outside of it. Maybe sales?

Someone already mentioned that they could be comparable to a mix of BTS+EXO, but also add this: 50 million records sold so far, and individual superstardoms. Everybody in Japan knows their names and faces each, not only as Arashi.

Fans at a airport is not a good indication of popularity - To distinguish whether a group is mid-tier or top tier. Or still relevant.

 

The video of Arashi from back in the days is basically void in this discussion since there is no way that many fans would be let in to begin with. Security is different now. Most k-fans don't even waste their time going to the airport nowadays.
