(Rant) How On Earth Did People Like The Office? (US Edition)

I just recently watched through two episodes of The Office, and I really cannot understand how this show gained the popularity that it did. Michael (Steve Carrell) has got to be the most annoying, inappropriate, racist, misogynistic, immature character I have EVER seen on a television show EVER. Like, how was what he did EVER justified? How was his character so well-liked by people? I don't understand this. I'm not a social justice warrior or anything like that and I understand that this show was at a different time but holy crap how can anyone actually sit through this television show for ten years watching this guy? I literally just wanted to punch him in the neck every time he appeared, I don't think I could even finish watching this show.

Other than him, the show is pretty dry, save for a few characters who I only know from other television/movie appearances.

End rant lol

lmao im too high for this but

um michael is supposed to be like that

i think that was supposed to be the whole ordeal was to 2nd hand embarrassment from michael

its not that deep

I never got the appeal of it myself but different people find different things fun or humorous, which can be applied to the office.

Ah, I see. I have a pretty good sense of humor, but this just doesn't sit well with me. I've never been so frustrated sitting through a television show before lol.

I guess I'd have to watch more to see that but I don't know if I can handle sitting through anymore of this lol he's really so irritating to me

I haven't watched the US version but as far as I know the point of the show is how dumb Michael is, and it's relatable/funny for people who get back home from work and can see their bosses in him or project him onto their bosses

I also dislike the office, all the characters are either just over the top caricatures of people or just plain boring. I found it painful to watch.

Yeah I felt pained watching just two lol I have no idea how people went through seasons of it. The characters seem pretty boring. I loved Parks & Rec so I was assuming this would be like that.

I heard better things about the UK version, also Lucy Davis is in there :)

The point is to make fun of relatable points of office life like a horribly racist manager and annoying coworkers that you can't get away from but are also your friends because they are there. Plus they have a lot of funny scenes like

Yeah you aren't meant to really like Michael though~ He is just the relatable cringe factor like "Oh gosh I know someone like that"

I actually started watching the show last month after avoiding it for years. I saw clips and thought it was dumb. But I fell in love with the show.

Michael Scott is supposed to be annoying and irritating. Steve Carrell said recently that if they rebooted the show it wouldn't work in today's society. The stuff Scott says is supposed to be over the top. You're supposed to find Scott annoying. The intention is to laugh at him; not with him. You're supposed to be offended by what he says as his employees are really offended by the things he said. They also make fun of him.

i don't watch the show but i get the general concept and can understand why it's popular.

just adding to what everybody said: the office isn't even that offensive, you better not watch married with children

edit: some people find michael sympathetic bc he's deeply insecure man who struggles with keeping relationships due to his social awkwardness. his racism and sexism comes from him being a complete dumbass and his inability to put himself in others' shoes (and he's constantly mocked because of it)

I binge watched 5 seasons of The Office recently and i loved the show BUT i can't fucking stand Michael Scott and i don't think i'll ever be able to stand him. He doesn't get better in any way.

That said, i feel like you're supposed not to like him ? The show doesn't try to make him likeable (i really don't get how he's everyone's favorite character tho). Like people said above, we are supposed to make fun of him and find him offensive, that's the point of the show.

The problem I have is that the other characters are made to endure way too much and don't snap back at him - not enough. He's not called out on his terrible terrible behaviour most of the time and it gets annoying to never see him questions himself about how he treats everyone around him.
