Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, better known as Goblin, was a Hallyu phenomenon when it first broadcasted in 2016. It pushed actors Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook into superstardom and after a year of sweeping award ceremonies, fans still want more.

According to a source, a mainland Chinese TV station has been looking into adapting the Korean drama for the Chinese audiences. Discussions for the lead actors have reportedly already begun, and the source says 26-year-old Chinese actor Deng Lun (邓伦) is currently in negotiations to play Gong Yoo’s role Kim Shin, the immortal goblin.

Deng Lun shot to fame after starring in 2018’s popular xianxia hit Ashes of Love <香蜜沉沉烬如霜> alongside Andy Yang (æ¨ç´«). He debuted six years ago in the television drama Flowers in Fog <花éžèб雾éžé›¾>, which also starred Taiwanese actress Ruby Lin (林心如) and Korean actor Joo Jin-mo.

Goblin won’t be China’s only Korean drama remake this year. On February 26th, it was announced that the Korean drama I Can Hear Your Voice will be getting the remake treatment as well. Confirmed stars in the Chinese remake include Kim Jin (金瀚) and Stephy Qi (戚薇).

if he's as iconic as he was in ashes of love i am so ready asdjf;klaskdfj;sdk

He can play the Grim Reaper but not Goblin. I think he suits more the role of Lee Dong Wook than Gong Yoo. He doesn't have that maturity that a Goblin/Gong Yoo exudes.

I kinda disagree, I think Deng Lun has the same brand of charm as Gong Yoo. Given he's not my fave, he has the demeanour and comedy timing that can pull the Goblin off (Deng Lun isn't the most talented or versatile among C-actors, but nor was Gong Yoo - but Goblin is such a demeanour driven character that's it's really all about being charming while delivering a serviceable set of emotions)

A little trickier would be casting Grim Reaper and and Ji Eun Tak - Kim Goeun was a great actress on her own and did justice as Ji Eun Taka with what the script has given her but lacked to have sizzling chemistry with Gong Yoo. This lack of chemistry between them became really pronounced when pitted against the storyline of Grim Reaper and Sunny where Lee Dongwook and Yoo Inna were able to create some really good onscreen tension together - but lbh, the ones with the most chemistry in the drama was Kim Min Jae and Kim Sohyun playing their younger counterparts. Despite this, the bromance aspect was also very solid with the chemistry with Goblin, Grim Reaper and Deokhwa and the actors pulled it off with aplomb.

I just can't really find an actor that can pull off Grim Reaper the way Lee Dongwook did in China. He needs to be handsome but also with a melancholic and low presence. In addition he needs to be able to pull off dry comedy really well (and this isn't really a strength with many Chinese actors). The closest I can think is Elvis Han but presence-wise, he does feel too strong as compared to what the Grim Reaper is supposed to be. Liu Haoran has the aura but also seems to be too babyfaced and frail for it.

I disagree with everything you said here especially pointing at Liu Haoran has the aura to be grim reaper? Not even close to looks, although he is young, too young to play that role, I could never imagine him playing neither the 2 roles, Well whatever, we will never know the result until it comes out.

Considering a lot of people in this thread agrees Deng Lun to be a fitting Goblin, mayhaps it's you who has the unpopular opinion?

And if you read my post well I actually put in Liu Haoran not because of his looks - but the boy is one of the few who has some potential acting chops and *melancholic* feel to do Grim Reaper, but you also forgot I added "but also seems to be too babyfaced and frail for it" - I certainly acknowledged he physically didn't fit the role.

But that's almost always the case for these Chinese adaptations though? Remember when Yang Yang and Liu Yifei were casted for TMOPB movie and people were legit anticipating that more than the drama version because they suited everyone's mental images of the characters from the book more? Or how there was a lot of doubt with the current cast of Goodbye My Princess (but it now has a 7.3 rating on douban after last night's ep)?

Ashes of Love really made him rise and his main selling point is his combination of boyish-manly that's quite rare amongst his peers (and if there's any actor who has that, they're definitely nowhere near his current star power).

It's interesting how you suggest him to be the Grim Reaper when that's a far more emotionally taxing role and I don't really think Deng Lun at his current level can pull it off? You need to remember

Wang Yeo was a corrupted soul which is why he even became a GR to pay his dues - he lives his life in mundane nothingness always in constant longing of something he doesn't even know

and that kind of role requires a deeper level of acting. Not necessarily better, but also a special kind.

I think it's hard to say who is suitable or not since actors are supposed to be able to take on all kinds of roles (at least the experienced/good ones). We can base our opinions on what we've already seen of them but we don't know if they can play a certain character until we've seen them do it.

Anyhow I don't mind Denglun playing Goblin so if it's really him I'll look forward to it. It'll be interesting to see if he can pull it off.

Although since both Gong Yoo and Dong Wook are slightly older/mature actors I think it's a bit odd to cast two younger ones in a remake..not that I know how old the Goblin actually was before he stopped aging.
