The night has yet to end. The moonlight is cold, shining upon the west-facing window.

The dream is ever so long, and yet [we] always meet [and then] part ways into uncertainty.
[My] eyes moisten; only pray that you will gaze backward.

[At our] parting, [my] heart breaks. Tears flow in vain; the [beloved] person does not return.
[Next to] the waters of the River of Forgetfulness[1.1], calmly and quietly watch the rights and wrongs [within] the mortal world[2].
Time turns backward. drink a cup of oblivion[1.2].
If [it'd be] like [our] first encounter, whom would [you] return for?

T/N:

[1] This relates to what happens after death in Chinese Mythology. After dying, a person would pass through the Gates of Hell (鬼门关), walk down Yellow Spring Road (黄泉路), and cross over [1.1] the River of Forgetfulness (忘å·æ²³) via Naihe Bridge (奈何桥). Next to the bridge is Old Lady Meng (孟婆), who makes [1.2] the tea of forgetfulness (though in the lyrics, the technical translation of the term used is "forget love/feelings") from the water of the River of Forgetfulness and other ingredients. In order to be reincarnated, one must cross Naihe Bridge. To cross Naihe Bridge, one must drink the tea of forgetfulness. Upon drinking said tea, the soul loses all memories and thus any feelings of love from the past life.

[2] 红尘 (lit. red dust) is a metaphor for the ordinary world of mankind. When horses and carriages passed over the unpaved earthen roads in the olden days, dust would rise. These 'roads' represented the figurative roads to fame and fortune that the common person pursues.

[3] 轮回, in the general sense, means continuous cycling, but it is also used to specifically refer to the cycles of reincarnation.
