Hi OHers! A long short introduction, I'm studying as a media student in SEA region.

So what happen is that I will have to take a 3rd language subject on upcoming semester. And we are forced to take Arabic language when it has no significance value in term of using it in the future (except some of us maybe wanted to learn more on the religious side). Plus, I already took Arabic language like thrice throughout my school years and still not able to remember and converse now (tells you how insignificant for me to learn it again for the 4th time). But since most (pretty much everyone of my batch) aren't interested in it, we're pretty much decided to go for other language instead. This is what I'm having for other option and my thought:

  • Korean - I already have basic skills to read and write (but not understand) and I have to go through that shit for 2 semesters.
  • Japanese - I used to learn a lil bit of Japanese before through anime and it seems handy to have since we have a handful of Japanese environment companies here that I can applied for job.
  • Mandarin - No definite interest but it's a good choice since I'm living in a culture with Chinese community around me.
  • French - I'm starting to gain so much interest in French now especially I get to know more and more of French native here. I think I will get so much help and social benefit here if I take French.
  • German - If I'm still an engineering student, I would have take German since it's very useful in that industry. So it's pretty safe to say that I'll not learn this.

Truthfully, I'm leaning towards the middle 3, either Japanese, or French. But Korean is, well, kpop is our community and Mandarin is a good to go too- So dear OHers, I need your opinions and points in this so I can proceed my 3rd language subject without regret

honestly, japanese or korean. especially in global companies, they give you a competitive edge and in tech companies korean especially is an incredibly hot commodity. chinese is spoken by many, yes but that's exactly why it's not as much of a stand out addition on one's resume.

but in the end, i think you should go with whatever you are passionate about. no one learns a language without the proper motivation.

mandarin or french imo

mandarin is probably really useful long term

french will help you socially and it seems like you'd enjoy it

good luck eunnie ohbi.png rlytearpls.png

this is why French is interesting to me!

I know lots of French speaking here and those that close to me too are French speaking

but I have to consider for my future too

Mandarin. China's economy is thriving. And it's the most spoken language in the world. It will benefit you a lot.

this really is a good point, although I'm not really inclined to learning Chinese :rlytearpls:

If ur not inclining to lesrn mandarin, then it might probably be harder to motivate urself to learn

it will be a pain in the ass if you are not motivated for it so i think then go for the languages you are the most motivated about

at the end of the day all the languages you listed are actually useful ~

Chinese speaking is very much advantageous in my country since the field I'm studying now is heavily Chinese lenient. but I'm more inclined towards Japanese or Korean since I already had my baby steps in em before

and yes I couldn't bring myself to have major interest in learning Mandarin. not passionate enough

Mandarin seems like the best idea since it’s common in your area and a lot of people speak it around the world

And then french and japanese come close with usefulness in your career field and how common it’s spoken

exactly bluwu- i'm torn to learn all of them atm :rlytearpls:

yeah- just that in my economy, Mandarin is a strong advantage so I come to give big thought whether I should add that to my resume or stick to language that I really like-

but choosing the most motivated for me, it's still either Japanese, Korean or French to me as of now rip :rlytearpls:

aww merci beaucoup neighbor :rlytearpls: if I'm taking French you know I'll definitely come to you ^^

I chose French since it’s a language spoken in Africa and I’d like to work with Africa in the future..

It really depends on your own personal tastes too.

I'm seeing myself stuck in Asia for years so maybe Korean or Japanese-

but then French is beautiful and I have people I can converse French with here lol

lolol- well yeah if I'm taking French they're my go to for help ^^

I wouldn't learn a language that serves a small market and has a super fast declining birth rate making its market even smaller in the future

and which language is this?
