By ANDREW LITTLE

Admaster, a Chinese data solution provider focused on domestic advertising, just put out a data-driven list of China’s most commercially valuable celebrities of 2018. Their assessment model, the fancy-sounding Celebrity Selection Index (CSI), aggregates data collected on a celebrity’s social influence, buzzworthy-ness and brand help — while also taking a “risk factor†into account (more on that below) — to produce an overall score. We don’t necessarily agree with the ranking, but it’s certainly interesting.

Some fresh faces are featured at the very top of the list while some of China’s most well-known stars sit at the 5-15 range, making the list somewhat atypical. RADII-favorite pop star Kris Wu sits at No. 11, for example, despite being very commercially active. Beloved TFBoys member Roy Wang (Wang Yuan) sits at No. 12, presumably because he signed a contract last year with the studio behind Fan Bingbing — who was recently engulfed in a tax evasion scandal (guess that’s the risk factor at play). Lu Han, another hugely popular star and “the new KFC colonel“, only comes in at No. 6.

Anyway, here are the top 10 — see how many you recognize.

1. Jackson Yee (Yiyang Qianxi)

celebvaluejackson-200x300.png

The youngest of the youthful TFBoys trio (he’s still just 18, eek), Jackson Yee was first discovered when performing a hip hop dance routine at a children’s talent competition. Sticking to his roots, and growing up a little at the same time, in 2018 Jackson took part in the hip hop dance reality show Street Dance of China, a move that prompted us to broach the pressing question, is Jackson Yee sexy now?

Sexy or not, Jackson is successfully shifting from “child star to “teen idolâ€, something all three TFBoys are working towards (so much pressure on these kids).

2. Cai Xukun

celebvaluecai-200x300.png

While not a TFBoy, ‘98 born Cai Xukun was selected in elementary school as one of the TFBoys candidate trainees, propelling him toward future stardom. His big break didn’t come until last year when he participated in the new Chinese reality show Idol Producer where he placed first, setting him up to become the leading member of boy group Nine Percent, the latest beneficiaries of China’s “fan economyâ€.

Cai was recently selected as the NBA’s first “Chinese New Year Celebration Brand Ambassador†(yes, that’s now a thing), sending a certain boring male corner of the internet into hysterics due to his “feminine†appearance.

3. Dilraba Dilmurat

celebvaluedilraba-200x300.png

Chinese actress of Uyghur descent Dilraba Dilmurat had a particularly restless and impressive year in 2018. She starred in romantic comedy 21 Karat, romance drama series The Flame’s Daughter, as well as the science fiction romance comedy series Sweet Dreams. She capped things off by ultimately winning the crown of “Golden Eagle Goddess†at the 12th China Golden Eagle TV Art Festival.

Her rapid ascent in recent years has been remarkable, and she’s also started to edge into the international spotlight, albeit often due to the contrast between her mainstream acceptance and the treatment of other Uyghurs from Xinjiang at the moment.

4. Yang Mi

celebvalueyangmi-229x300.png

Yang Mi’s career as a thespian began at age four, launching her toward eventual critical acclaim. In 2017, Yang ranked No. 3 on Forbes China’s Celebrity Top 100 list and won best actress at the Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival. In 2018 she starred in the drama Negotiator and the fantasy drama Legend of Fuyao.

5. Zanilia Zhao (Zhao Liying)

celebvaluezanilia-274x300.png

A part of the industry for over a decade but only enjoying mainstream popularity in the past few years, Zanilia acted in 2017’s commercially and critically successful Han Han-directed movie Duckweed, and last year in both Monkey King 3 and the historical drama The Story of Minglan. She was also responsible for one of 2018’s words of the year in China and starred in a PUBG + takeout food mash-up. Eclectic.

This is the second list she’s trailed Yang Mi on — the 2017 Forbes China Celebrity top 100 ranked her at No. 4.

6. Lu Han

celebvalueluhan-200x300.png

Kris Wu, number 11? And now Lu Han… number 6?! Is this an indication of seismic shifts in China’s pop culture environment? Not really, Lu Han took home No. 1 on a different top celebrity list recently and is still incredibly active. Last year he played a part in another new China street dance reality show, iQIYI’s Hot-Blood Dance Crew, and also put out his new album XXVII.

7. Karry Wang (Wang Junkai)

celebvaluekarrywang-200x300.png

Like No. 1 Jackson Yee, fellow TFBoy Karry is beginning to shed his boyhood skin. In 2017 the TFBoys leader was admitted into Beijing Film Academy, and last year released his own autobiography 19 Year Old Time Difference. An autobiography at 19?! Man. Anyway, in 2018 he starred in the youth adventure drama Eagles and Youngster and otherwise was fairly quiet, but don’t expect him to shy away from the limelight completely just yet.

8. Deng Lun

celebvaluedenglun-200x300.png

Another fresh face on this list, Deng Lun surged to popularity in 2018 courtesy of the wuxia romance drama Ashes In Time and also co-starring in Sweet Dreams with number 3 on this list, Dilraba Dilmurat. His rise to fame began earlier than last year though — in 2017 he made it onto Forbes China’s 30 under 30 for Chinese entertainment.

9. Zhu Yilong

celebvaluezhuyilong-200x300.png

An online hit, Beijing Film Academy graduate Zhu Yilong starred in the web series drama Guardian last year and went on to win the Popular Actor Award at the 2018 Weibo Movie Awards Ceremony — he also won the 2019 Weibo God Award. Like Deng Lun, in 2017 Forbes China placed him on their 30 under 30 list for Chinese entertainment.

10. Lay Zhang (Zhang Yixing)

celebvaluelayzhang-200x300.png

An Exo member hailing from Changsha, in 2018 Lay made a point of breaking out of China and onto the international stage. He made his first US appearance last year at the music festival Lollapalooza with Alan Walker (watch below), and was the only Chinese celebrity invited to the red carpet event at the this year’s Grammy’s. Fancy.

Jackson Yi's face was everywhere in 2018, every street corner and sometimes twice in one commercial break. Cai Xukun was topping polls left and right in 2018.

No Fan Bing Bing? Damn, did the scandal hit her so hard?

She's never been that buzzworthy, not unless there's a scandal. These are people who get talked about for absolutely nothing. It can be their hordes of fans hyping them up or fights between fans and antis.

How did Angelababy drop so hard? Also I will never understand why Dilraba Dilmurat is so popular

She didn't have much drama and movie work last year, I gues she only has 1 drama but that didn't fare well unlike Yang Mi's and Dilraba is popular among young people, she's just everywhere.

Had no idea that Qianxi would be no.1. Not a fan of TF B but I somehow thought that Junkai and Wangyuan were more popular.

Then we have Zhu Yilong..watched his supposedly breakthrough drama and it was not good. (䏿‡‚他的魅力在哪儿...ä¸å¥½æ„æ€å“¦).

Anyway Xiaozhan made it into top 100~

Still missing 2 of my faves though.

you need to understand the division of their fandom; tfboys has a single fandom which is clover but the 3 members has their own fandom too wang junkai"s fandom the blue crabs are dominated by teenage to early 20"s girls, Wang Yuan, sweet duplings, are mostly composed of children and boys while jackson"s club, cranes, mostly are older working or married women, so you know which fandom has stronger income

i feel bad for wang yuan but we all know that, but what i really don't like is they keep attaching TFBoys name to Cai XUkun, good thing it is not affecting him since those words are not coming from his mouth; hope they wont mention that again when Xukun was being talked; it is even said that he was not even being considered to be part of tfboys he is just a fellow trainee

BTW TFboys as a group is at No.15 dafuq

Yang mi won a foreign acting award ??? For what project ?? I never seem to watch a project (movie/dramas) where yang mi acting was excelent. And can somebody please explain what so good about Guardian ? Cause i try to watch it for 10 or so episodes but it just feel so silly to me. Of course the main characters are good at acting but the storyline was just like any idol dramas. IMO

Lol, that's the ZYL breakthrough drama I was talking about. I agree. The plot was silly and some things didn't even make sense.

I see. Interesting that they appeal to different age groups. I can understand why based on how they act on shows. Wang Yuan's personality seems very bubbly and kid-like while Qianxi is more reserved and calm. Junkai is somewhere inbetween...that's the impression I have of them.

But among the 3 of them who really truly is the most popular?

also can you tell why is it that most of them cater to different demographics? Is it because of tv shows they appeared on?

for me it is still wang junkai but Qian Xi's fandom is really strong financially

I really don't know but I think it is because of their individual appeal and personality

Wang Junkai has this next boy/Prince like aura which young generation esp girls really like. He gives the aura of a prince or hero from a shojo Manga that is nice, handsome, noble and rich which is kinda too good to be true hats why his fandom is mostly dominated by that range

Wang Junkai is childish and cute, in and out, this kind of character appeal mostly to children cause it gives the friendly vibes that will not trigger their harm detector instinct. Most boys like this kind of character too; if you would notice most men/boys prefer cute things and they are more nice/friendly to their most cute/helpless friend because it gives them ego boost and because of man's instinct to protect which are important to them

Qian Xi appeal esp his appearance is the most manly and serious He is giving the vibes of a an adult man who is mysterious and reliable. And reality speaking Older/Matured thinking women like that kind of man cause it is giving them the sense of being secured and typically matured women likes matured men for serious relationship

Same, I always though Karry Wang is the most popular since he is the one I always found almost everywhere (he is also the most handsome among the 3 imo), I guess Jackson Yee's popularity boost recently has something to do with his appearance in Shake It Up. Anyways, thanks for your response.

Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu gained attention for Guardian because of their acting not because of the plot of the drama, not because of the production but how they brought to life the two lead characters. Zhu Yilong and Bai Yu pretty much carried the drama and that is what made it his break through drama.
