stops with the mentality that boring piano ballads are the only way to show off an idol's vocal talent. most of the time when a main/lead vocalist of a group goes solo they debut with a slow, ballad song or just a mid tempo song. obviously there are exceptions to this but most of the time i enjoy solo songs from the group members that... may not have the best singing talent and i look forward to their debut more even though i tend to bias someone from the vocal line. i understand that korea loves ballads but i just don't. besides you don't need an amazing voice to make a good ballad (think Hyunjin's "Around You" or Sooyoung's "Winter Breath") this isn't any hate against the idols who sing them but i just want there to be more of verity in songs that also shows off the singer's amazing talent

Can't say I agree, I really love ballads and ballads tend to do really well so ofc they're gonna go with something that will hit big

that's very valid and while i'm aware that my thread is 1000% opinion based i just can't help but wish that i enjoyed more songs from amazing singers but they just don't make the kind of songs that i enjoy as much and OH is a good place to express opinions and i do understand that ballads do better and i think that that's the main reason why they release ballads which i don't think is the most valid reason to do that

Unpopular opinion, but some ballads made me become stans of groups and singers.

understandable. i feel the way about groups that do the opposite... i hate to admit it but for a long time i wasn't interested in Taeyeon's solo songs until she started to come out with more diverse songs

care to elaborate? that's a very interesting point

i'm thinking more from the aspect of how kpop is all about "image". a lot of companies and idols still force this whole "this member has this image" "this member has that image" thing instead of just letting people be themselves 100%. and their creative teams clearly stick to it too so they don't come up with anything spectacular. it

i mean, i see what you mean in terms of it being boring, but the slow background noise allows for the listeners to put more focus on the vocals, that's why it's used to be a good test to see how well the artist sings.

what was your opinion when they released the ballad version of Into the New World?

that's a really great point that i didn't think about and i agree. it also screws over the idol (and company) in the long run because as soon as an idol comes out with songs that they want to release than it can be really shocking to the audience and maybe think that the idols is suddenly inauthentic which isn't a good thing

i think it was amazing. i don't want you to think that i think that piano ballads are from hell or something. there is too much contextually surrounding the ballad version of into the new world to make it nothing but beautiful. and i understand your point about the lack of instrumentals to allow the listener to hear the voice better but i can also argue that a more hyped up songs causes the listener to listen to the song more and eventually discover the amazing voice along with an upbeat song (think Taeyeon's "Why")

Fine is my favorite Taeyeon song of all time. I believe in the end it depends on the singer being able to make their voice stand out, cause IU's Good Day was more on the upbeat side but it was where she was able to showcase her high notes

that's a great example! lol but i just think if there was so innovation in mind there are plenty of songs that can be upbeat and easily showcase the singer's ability

I'm not sure if you listen to boygroups as much, but Nu'Est's Baekho has a great singing voice and he's able to display it well. Another one is EXO's Chen.

They're the 2 prime examples of being able to sing well with upbeat/faster tempo music

i do listen to boygroups though it's harder for me to pull knowledge about their songs since i listen to girl groups about 70% of the time
