I have to pour out my soul somewhere because I still can't get over his perfection today.

I always admire people who may get tons of hatred or get criticised for their life choices but end up victorious not in words, but in actions. It's like... yeah, laugh, hate, bash, I don't care... I'll have the last laugh.

Yoochun hasn't experienced a lot of hatred, thank God. And that's because he's humble, so he doesn't give the general public the excuse to hate on him. Only bitter stans hate and bash him, or braindead netizens who think it's a crime to smoke while having asthma.

He got some backlash when he started acting and throughout his acting career, but nothing serious. If you consider what he did, I seriously can't think of any other idol-turned-actor that only got leading roles and a shitload of awards for all his works, from all stations. Even old idols like Eric who aren't bashed for being actors nowadays didn't start with leading roles (I remember Eric's first role, it was a supporting one).

And then you have Sea Fog. A movie he was advised against, for obvious reasons. It wasn't what people or his own fans were used to. He would tarnish his idol image and lose plenty of other works like the CFs he used to do. I can understand everyone's arguments against it, it was a huge risk. But this guy... he believes in himself and his choices. He went ahead and did it. He put on loads of weight for the role and many people ridiculed him for it. And here he comes today, as if he took a trip to the past, looking glorious and magnificent at the spot of a winner, a person who broke records, being the first actor ever winning the newcomer award 9 times, from all awards, from everyone that matters. Is there anything else that screams "fuck you" to haters louder than this...

I'm not proud because he got the awards, those are just confirmation that his work is recognised. I'm proud and happy because he believed in himself and worked hard to pull it off, sacrificing many things in the process someone else would not have sacrificed.

Yoochun, you gave up so much to be where you are now. But this is only the beginning... you've made huge connections and a huge name out of this, if you keep choosing your projects based on your gut and not what everyone else around you thinks, you'll keep climbing higher and higher. And I'll be there to watch it and be proud and happy for you.

That was a letter from me, your fan of 5 years now. You'll never read it, but I know you can feel the love of your fans supporting you. We've been through so much together, my bias. And I know the better things are yet to come. â¤

I love reading about Chunsa stories and found some I can relate to so much. They deserve to be posted here too.

Who Is That Man In Sungkyungkwan Scandal?

What’s wrong with aunties these days that they have become a formidable force, championing Korean pop singers and actors? They are no longer content with babysitting their grandchildren and dogs. I too have become a grand champion. And I have no grandchildren and no grand dogs.

I had been watching Korean dramas for 10 years when I chanced upon Sungkyungkwan Scandal (SKKS) on cable channel KBS World in late 2010. That night, I had plonked myself on the couch, fiddled with the TV remote, and happened to catch Episode 1 of SKKS. If someone had warned me that it was going to be the turning point in my life, I might have gone to the pet shop to buy myself a dog instead.

During the first 4 episodes, I was constantly griping “What was the director thinking when he cast this average-looking, stiff cardboard as the main lead, Lee Seon Joon? He can’t act. This actor must have come cheap. He should switch role with the handsome, baddie Student Council President.“

To me, the actor taking on the Lee Seon Joon character was as mediocre as his looks. My family was so sick and tired of having to hear my criticizing the main actor for 4 episodes, I suspect they would have thrown me out if I didn’t own the couch and the house and had paid for the TV.

Strangely by Episode 5, I noticed this guy’s acting had improved so much, I was fascinated by him. I no longer lay on the couch, grumbling. I sat up and watched him closely, mesmerized. His charisma set him apart from the other actors. His looks grew on me. It dawned on me that he is a handsome man whose looks make you want more and more of him. And it’s more than just his curly eyelashes and charming smile. He has a soft yet determined look in his eyes that no body language can portray. This guy can act! What has happened to him? Or to me?

Every new episode was shown at 9:30 p.m. and the first repeat was 5 and a half hours later at 3 a.m. the following morning. From Episode 5 onwards, I no longer slept at normal times. I would wait up to catch the first repeat. I had to turn the TV volume down very low as the whole household was asleep at 3 a.m. It was my turn to be afraid of my family.

The second repeat was on every Sunday morning which clashed with my church service. I just couldn’t get enough of him. So for the next 15 episodes on Sundays, I would wake up early, watch the repeat, speed to church and slip into worship service late. I have never felt more sinful on Sundays and God so forgiving.

Who is this actor? I Googled him. I found out his name is Park Yu Chun. Imagine my shock when I discovered he is a K-pop singer from TVXQ ( later broke away with 2 band members to form JYJ ) – a profession I dislike intensely. I hold the view that K-pop idols are plastic looking clones who move their butts on stage, pretending they can sing. I was shocked that this handsome singer is so credible an actor. And SKKS was his debut drama. Unbelievable.

So I checked out TVXQ only out of my interest in this actor. I was expecting to see some pretty boy dancers in tight leotards. Boys who are expected to look good only. Not sing. But the moment I heard the first song “Why did I fall in love with you?â€, I was stunned. I had no idea it was a Japanese or Korean song. These guys have beautiful voices. I thought they were lucky in just that one song. When I heard “Love in the Ice†and “I Believeâ€, my prejudice against Korean boy bands was over! It took only 3 TVXQ songs in less than 15 minutes to change my mind.

Three voices stood out and I was to learn these voices belong to the three guys who broke away later and formed JYJ.

When I heard Yu Chun’s speaking voice in “I Believeâ€, I nearly died! How can an 18 year old boy have such a sexy, manly, velvety, smooth, dreamy voice? I was completely lost in him when I heard his voice. It’s as though our souls met and touched and refused to let go. I had no idea the rookie who acted as Lee Seon Joon could sing so well. And his American accent in spoken English so sexy.

Then I learnt about the law suit and my love and respect for these 3 young, handsome, multi-talented men skyrocketed. These youngsters have the moral courage to take on a giant establishment which even matured adults would think twice to challenge. From then on, I studied their past and bought their music. I listen to their music daily and on my MP3 when I sleep. I wake up with JYJ music in my ears. Not one single night has gone by since I saw SKKS that I have not had Yu Chun sing to me when I sleep.

I have listened to his singing “An empty space for youâ€, the OST from his second drama “Miss Ripleyâ€, a million times and counting. Nothing gives me more joy than to watch him sing while playing the piano which he did in the drama.

But his sterling performance in “Rooftop Prince†floored me. He made us think that all princes should be born as charming as he had portrayed Crown Prince Lee Gak to be.

His acting in the melodrama “Missing You†took on a completely different turn that should silence all critics that his past works were well received only because he is an idol. His subsequent works as a presidential guard in “3 days†and a comedic detective in “The girl who sees smells†all showcase his many talents from martial arts to romance to comedy. But nothing beats his role as the sailor Dong Shik in “Haemooâ€, his debut movie where he won 8 Best New Actor awards from every sector in the movie industry .

Some actors he had worked with, commented that Yu Chun’s acting is better than some full time actors. Yet he is well known for being a polite, humble, respectful actor who is a mood maker on set. His work attitude in returning to the drama set ahead of time after his father’s funeral in March 2012, attested to his professionalism.

I am impressed by his wisdom when he advised his younger brother, Yoo Hwan, who followed him into acting: “You are first a human being, then an actor. So be respectful of all your seniors on the drama set.â€

My love for Yu Chun the actor knows no bounds. I am watching SKKS for the 43rd time. Yu Chun is so refreshing no matter how many times I watch him in the same scenes.

So who is that man in SKKS?

6002-663.jpg?w=402&h=226

Now I know. He is Park Yu Chun. The actor who has won the prestigious Baeksang award for Best New Actor in TV Drama in 2011 and the Best New Actor in Movies in 2015. How many actors can win that in their lifetime? And from an idol actor at that. It’s like getting it right the first time whether it’s on the small or big screen. Critics can no longer say he is an idol actor much longer. Yu Chun, the actor, has arrived.

yuchun-baeksang.jpg?w=346&h=475

To me, he is the first and possibly last Korean actor who has a special place in my heart. And also the first and last Korean singer whose voice I want to listen to for as long as I live.

A Quirk of Fate

I am a not-so-young career lady, a workaholic mouse, a bookworm. In my younger days (which feels like not so long ago, but might just be delusion on my part), I’ve never really been a serious fan of any artist. I have admired a number of singers and actors (mostly Western), but not to the point of staying up as late (or as early) as four in the morning just to watch their shows, or cry when they cry. That’s not for me. I did cry when JD Salinger died. But that’s different I guess, a favorite author died. The only thing that could get me to stay up until the small hours of the morning is a book. As I said, a bookworm.

I discovered Korean dramas in 2008. When I didn’t bring home any work (which was sort of seldom) and there was nothing to read (which was sort of even more seldom) I turned to K-dramas. Over the years, even with my busy schedule and my nose buried in books, I’ve watched a fair number of K-dramas so I’m not unfamiliar with the Korean flower boys and girls. One time as I was passing through the living room, I saw Mum watching this drama where a guy was sitting on some stairs and choking while a girl was trying to pat his back or something. I didn’t stop to see what would happen. A few nights later, I went home, for the first time in a very long while, hours before sunset. I didn’t have anything to do so I browsed over some blogs about Korean Dramas. The blogger was discussing about something and there was this guy who looked exactly like the choking guy I saw on Mum’s TV screen. I asked her the title of the drama she’s recently watching (just to check if I got the right one). She said, quite uncertainly, “Hmm… Prince Rooftop or Prince on the Rooftop?† So yeah, I got it, it was Rooftop Prince haha! She’s sixty so she forgets things. And that is how it all started.

The drama was the kind that made me laugh and cry. There were scenes that truly made me cry with the actor. That scene where he was shouting ‘princess’ over the floating body, oh boy I was a real mess.  He was very impressive whether as Lee Gak or Tae Young or Lee Gak pretending to be Tae Young. The way he portrayed the half-dead Tae Young gave me the shivers. And the way he did the comedic part was so refreshing because he wasn’t doing it while trying to be pretty at the same time. He was just being funny and making me laugh. I was thinking, who is this actor anyway? Who is Park Yoochun? I have to say it wasn’t really a “love-at-first-sight†kind of thing.  As I said, the K-dramaland is full of beautiful people, so it’s nothing extraordinary to find another beautiful couple in this drama.  But I have to admit it was a relief that the main actor looked like a man, instead of looking more beautiful than the female lead.  I mean he exudes manliness (especially in the Crown Prince Robe) even with those pretty eyelashes.  After finishing the drama a few days later I searched for other dramas of Park Yoochun. When I saw Sungkyunkwan Scandal on the list, I was more than surprised and excited. I’ve seen my Mum watching this on TV but I never got interested because it was a historical piece.  I’ve nothing against this type of drama, it’s just that I have to be in a certain kind of mood (and have a lot of time on my hands) to start one.  So I braced myself and started watching SKKS, because I HAD to see Park Yoochun again. And there goes my quirk of fate! Had I not clicked on the first episode of SKKS, I wouldn’t be here pouring my heart out over someone who doesn’t even know I exist. If Rooftop Prince was what made me curious about Park Yoochun, it was watching SKKS that got me mesmerized out of my wits.  Park Yoochun had me at Ibushio!

yc-in-my-world.jpg?w=538&h=337

Park Yoochun totally messed up my reading habits! He is the only one who ever came between me and my books. After SKKS, I went into all his other dramas. I searched all articles and news about him, getting deeper into this unfamiliar  and unusual world – the world of being a fan, a serious admirer.

Yoochun brought me first to JYJ. I got confused initially when I saw five boys in some videos. I was thinking, who are these other two boys? That was when I was introduced to DBSK/TVXQ and all that happened from their debut to the coldest summer. I may talk about this topic in a future post, or I may not, but to this day I hardly have any words to express how much I feel for them, for the pain and the difficult years that Yoochun, Jaejoong and Junsu had to go through (and sort of still going through to some extent).  After two and a half years of following Park Yoochun I have seen hundreds of videos already. But I’m pretty sure I haven’t watched every single one there is on Youtube.  There is just so much to see.  I can’t not watch DBSK’s old videos because Yoochun was part of it. And even after seeing the other talented members, especially Junsu and Jaejoong, who are beautiful people as well, my liking for Yoochun never wavered. No chance of transferring to another “bias†so to speak. I wasn’t in danger of any “bias wrecker†because, hey, the “bias wrecker†was my bias!

pianoman.jpg?w=508&h=396

I never imagined I would succumb to this kind of deep admiration for someone so young, someone I have never met and will never meet personally.  I have a great admiration and deep respect for some few good men/women but their ages range from 100 to 500 years old and they are obviously not of this world anymore! I don’t know why Park Yoochun is the latest addition to that classic list. In my eyes Park Yoochun is a classic. I didn’t know my admiration/affection could get any deeper, but it did. I have a feeling that once you start liking him, there’s no chance that you’re ever gonna like another one. Of course that could only be true with me or a handful of women. Pftt.

concert2.jpg?w=461&h=307So what did I see in this boy? Obviously he is a very handsome man. But he is not merely handsome.  What does set him apart from other handsome or more handsome men? His is not the out-of-this-world kind like Jaejoong’s and other Korean actors’. It’s not what I would call blinding, but rather it’s more captivating or ensnaring. He may have a boy-next-door handsomeness but there is also this big undefinable X about him that draws you in until you find yourself entrapped.  There is something in his gaze that burns and goes directly to your knees. But is it really solely due to his looks that I fell for him? A big NO. Seeing his performances on stage and learning that he taught himself to play the piano at a young age and that he writes/composes beautiful music as well was part of it.

5ad96e05da09625a7bec2ca.jpg?w=457&h=569And why is he so mysteriously sexy anyway? He is not one to show so much skin (well, at least not lately) or do hip thrust at all a lot, but he exudes sensuality just by standing and holding his mic, buttoned up long-sleeves and all!  Is it his hands and the way he holds his mic? Or his facial expression while singing? Or the way his eyes look out into the crowd, winking his left when getting to a high note? I can’t really put my finger on it. Maybe it just comes from within, coming out of his pores or something. Or we could just put it to him having that je ne sais quoi.

b2uzubgcqaaqkvc.jpg?w=335&h=503But my undoing was the personality of the boy. I mean, why would a very serious, never-been-star-struck, no-nonsense career woman like me crave for news about him, fly to another country just to watch his group’s concert even just once in this lifetime? For a bookworm to find a comment in her Reading Challenge, “You are 10 books behind schedule!†would come under the heading of unusual, and that’s putting it mildly.  Sometimes I think I’ve totally lost it.

I won’t claim to know who the real Park Yoochun is, that would be delusional. I can only surmise from what I’ve seen of his videos, interviews, articles and what others say about him.  So how do I see him? He is an old soul in a young man’s body. He is a deep-thinker, a keen observer, a sincere, well-mannered young man, shy, quiet but sometimes noisy too, a troll to his friends and fans, humble, very sensitive, used to cry easily but now is able to hold it in, loves deeply and consequently gets hurt deeply, loyal, filial, responsible, respectful towards elders and seniors, funny, not afraid to make fun of himself or look goofy, is liked and admired by peers, has a unique, more-than-brothers kind of relationship with his Jaejoong and Junsu, and a whole lot more of the little things that make him very special.

What about his voice?  To this day, Yoochun’s part in Bolero is still the only thing that could make me feel like my soul is sailing out of my body. I know next to nothing about the technicalities of voice quality. And I know from what I’ve read that his voice is technically lacking. Even so, the heart has its way of knowing what it wants to listen to. The heart cannot be dictated to on what could move it. It doesn’t follow rules, it is beyond rhyme or reason.

It’s his voice that touches my heart. It’s his voice that converses with my heart.

My heart seems to recognize his voice from a long time ago.

BEST CHUNSA DEFINITION EVER

Chunsa

A Chunsa is initially an unsuspecting female (or male, but mostly female) of the species, minding her own business, who unwittingly encounters a Park Yoochun either through a drama, a TVXQ or JYJ concert, or a random video on Youtube. An encounter is like stepping into the gravitational field of a black hole. She would watch him for some time without knowing why she’s watching him. She would be unaware of the spell she is being put under until suddenly without warning, BAM! The portals have closed. She is entrapped! She is spiraling down the black hole. She is charmed out of her wits.

The age of a Chunsa is varied. It ranges from five to seventy-five (or >). She could be a Christian, a Muslim, or a Buddhist. She  may be fair-skinned or dark-skinned or anything in between. She’s a daughter, a mother, an aunt, or a grandmother. She’s a student, an engineer, a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a writer, a teacher, an entrepreneur, an artist, a poet, a child actress… and the list goes on. But whatever age, religion or race, a Chunsa will have at least one pair of Mickey ears in her possession.

A Chunsa is faithful, generous, optimistic, plucky, passionate, witty and protective of a Yoochun. She is his angel after all. Although she adores a Yoochun, she is not blind to his shortcomings. A Yoochun’s imperfections are what make him perfect in the eyes of a Chunsa. She is known to have an inexhaustible patience when it comes to waiting for a Yoochun’s solo album. A MIA Yoochun doesn’t alarm or agitate her, simply because she is used to it. A Yoochun may disappear for months on end but a Chunsa simply takes it in her stride. But once a Yoochun sighting is made pandemonium breaks out in Chunsa world. One can only imagine what will happen when a solo album comes out.

A Chunsa will always be beside Park Yoochun, always keeping the faith.

And it was time for my own story

Just Another Chunsa Story

I’ve told parts of this story several times in the past five years I’ve been a Chunsa, but never the whole thing as I was afraid it would get boring. But this is a place to talk specifically for this journey, so I will let it all out and hopefully you won’t be yawning by the end of it.

I got a friend into kdramas while we were on a trip to Andalusia in 2009, as a means to have fun right before falling asleep in our nice hotel room. She became obsessed and eventually got into kpop. For months she’d been trying to get me into kpop as well, but I stubbornly resisted. She would constantly talk about a certain person she called Micky and a DBSK group and I remember seeing this name everywhere and being annoyed. You see, I was looking for fanfics of dramas (I’m a huge fanfic fan) and I couldn’t find any, because it looked like everyone cared for this group only. My friend convinced me to watch SKK scandal because her beloved “Micky†was in it and I “just had to watch for him†and after I read the premise, I thought, why not give this a chance… I like this kind of premise anyway. I had seen her “Micky’s†face before and didn’t think much of it. In fact I wondered why she got so much into him and started questioning her taste. I was so wrong…

lee-sun-joon.jpg?w=466&h=466

It only took a few scenes to change my mind – and my life – completely. I didn’t know what it was about this guy… I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He was glowing. He had an amazingly confident aura. I was… what’s a good verb… enthralled. Everything he did was interesting to me, every twinkle of the eyes, every little smirk, every hint of tear, every smile… I couldn’t get enough.  I could feel my heartbeat accelerating with his every scene. In between waiting for episodes, I hesitantly asked my friend to tell me more about him, so that’s when she saw the green light and sent me gifs, pictures, videos, fanfics, all kinds of info. I remember the shock after watching Mirotic for the first time, especially the live version, as I couldn’t believe there was actually a group who could dance and sing so well at the same time. I remember her telling me that while she thought Jaejoong was the most beautiful person she’d ever seen in the kpop scene, it was Yoochun she adored. I nodded in agreement because I felt the same way. It was too late. I was in love.

 tumblr_miqaijvems1rnj2kfo1_500.gif?w=395

For the next couple of years, I watched everything there was to watch about him. Miss Ripley and Rooftop Prince came out and I watched them with my sisters, whom also expressed a certain bias towards Yoochun, after being forced to watch endless videos of DBSK and JYJ with me. When my sister’s boyfriend, who had never managed to recognise a single Asian face before, pointed at him while we were watching Rooftop Prince and said “That’s Micky!† I realised that there was just something about this guy that made him unforgettable. It wasn’t just me.

Though my love began because of his acting and then eventually his singing and stage presence (I will of course add his appearance because I find him hot, sexy, cute, or any other good adjective ever used to describe a man that attracts you), what really solidified my status as a Chunsa was his personality. There are so many things about him that I love that I could fill in pages after pages… Someone once asked me why he was my ideal type. This was my answer, as short as I could ever make it:

“Because of his sense of humour, because he’s a dork, because he does his own thing without caring what people will say, because he’s insanely talented & I admire people who’re like that, because he’s a genius & a perfectionist in his work and laid back in everything else, because he’s a good flirt, because he’s not afraid to show feelings, because he’d take care of anyone beside him, because he likes warm things and family & normal every day stuff, because he’s simple, because his bad habits are my bad habits, because he honestly seems like a caring lover, because he cries with sad movies, because he’s emotional, because he cherishes his friends and because of about 20 other stuff. Summary: because he’s my ideal type.â€

bxdextxcmaa1f9e.jpg?w=403&h=440

At some point, feeling all this love by myself was not enough anymore. I decided to de-lurk and start talking to people who appeared to be as love-struck as I was. And thus I began making friends, sharing things with them that brought us closer. My love for Yoochun never faltered, in fact, it became even stronger each year that went by, because of all the good things he had brought into my life. With every new work, I admired him more and more and even cried out of happiness when he got awards. I will never forget him. I’m insanely proud of him and thankful for everything he has given me. I’m not the kind of fan who expects things from their idol. I just take whatever he has to give with eternal gratitude. I see his faults and like him even more because of them. He’s perfect in his imperfections.

 cgyjgyruyaarpx2.jpg?w=371&h=554

I know I won’t be actively talking about him or searching for news every day, for my whole life. But I also know that I will never stop caring about him. If he makes a drama or a movie, I’ll watch it. If he sings, I’ll listen to him and buy his album. Whatever he does, I will always care. Because he’s my idol, Park Yoochun. The first famous person I ever adored so much, and the last.

There are so many things I could still say about him, I could probably write a novel. Nowadays I like other idols too because he and DBSK/JYJ eventually got me into kpop enough to realise there were certain good aspects of it. I love his bandmates, his ex-label mates and some others. But no one else makes me get so protective and defensive. If I had to choose, it’d always be him. My feelings cannot be measured, he comes first in everything.

 cr_ppeha.jpg?w=446&h=431

To end this rambling, I would like to share a video. It makes me cry every time I watch it, as it expresses Chunsa feelings so well.

So I leave this here for all Chunsa who may have not seen it before. I assure you you’ll find a piece of yourselves in it. All the credit goes to its creators.

[FULL TRANS] Park Yuchun’s Interview with Women’s Weekly (Shukan Josei/週刊女性)

1-jydxrsb8tfhcr.png?w=1280

The things that one wants to know, he’s here right now

the time to get in touch with Park Yuchun“with no make-upâ€â€”-

â€œI feel that I have a special fate and luck, but I’m not particularly special. I want to live normally.â€

Park Yuchun who said it this way, carried out his singing activities as a member of JYJ and at the same time, debuting as an actor through 2010’s “Sungkyunkwan Scandalâ€. The people who met him as a singer and those who met him as an actor, although the way how they met him varied, all the people who met Park Yuchun would get attracted by his charm no matter which way was it. That is, once you know, you’ll be caught into that particular presence.

After showing a steady and exquisite acting in “Sungkyunkwan Scandalâ€, Park Yuchun filmed a romantic drama “Miss Ripleyâ€.

Through the touching fictional romantic drama “Rooftop Princeâ€, he was able to establish his position as a top-notch actor. And in “Missing Youâ€, his sorrowful and at the same time, lovable acting moved the hearts of the female viewers.

In the suspense drama “3Daysâ€, having to face big time actors, his acting was still comparable to them. And as an actor, Park Yuchun’s acting continues to grow.

Also, Yuchun’s new drama, “The Girl Who Sees Smellsâ€, is currently being aired for the first time through KNTV. Although the main protagonist is a bit mysterious, a guy with no feelings who doesn’t feel pain, but Yuchun was able to interpret this character naturally. Next, we’ll show you the “Yuchun world†that is impossible for people to dislike and has endless charm.

2.png?w=1280

—–With older women, I want to hug her tight —–

—–From start till the end of the interview was very pleasant? —–

Yuchun just used Japanese in answering throughout the interview. “ It can’t be, it can’t be, it’s already the maximum limit!†Although he said it this way, but nonetheless, he was quick-witted and fluent in answering. From start till the end, Yuchun answered our questions in excellent spirits.

Holding his chin while thinking about the questions, laughing at his answers, his varied facial expressions, just like the cuteness of a child or a small pet.

ibxwg1fygshjty.png?w=1280

During the photoshoot, Yuchun was also full of cuteness with the male photographer.

Requesting the photographer, “more sexy!†Yuchun put his hand on the neckline of his thin knitted shirt, pulled it down, then exposing his shoulder! He’s really very dedicated! But the photographer dismissed him saying, “Uh, it’s a little too much…..†The image of Yuchun sticking out his tongue after he was turned down by the photographer was also very cute!

3.png?w=1280

Because he cannot feel pain, so it doesn’t matter even if he’s being kicked and hit; because he cannot feel heat, that’s why he can drink a very hot coffee in just one shot! Because he doesn’t have a sense of taste and doesn’t have the feeling of fullness, that’s why he can finish up several big bowls of dishes. A man with “paresthesia†is like this.

In the latest TV drama “The Girl Who Sees Smellsâ€, Choi Mugak, the role that Park Yuchun acted on, is both fearless and insensitive (it’s just that he doesn’t have feelings?). His character is serious, plus, being a policeman, is a manly role that women would love.

“Probably, among the roles that I have played until now, Mugak is the one that is closest to my usual self. But it’s not because of this that made it easier for me to act. Can I act it out well or not? The uneasiness I felt before the shooting started was more than the anticipation. Most of his feelings were numb, that’s why he also doesn’t have a “heart that feelsâ€. When he eats something good, he won’t have the feeling of happiness. The reason why Mugak’s character became like this, I feel it’s because after the death of his beloved sister, he created it out just to overcome his grief. That’s why he’s even more pitiful. Having to portray all these was very hard, that’s why I was very worried. It’s not just with no feelings, I also have to show Mugak’s grief.â€

So that’s the case! That’s why, the Mugak who remains expressionless no matter what, caused people to laugh. At the same time, there’s also something like sadness and also something like anger, which made it impossible for people to understand the strange temperament. It makes people who saw it, unable to get over it.

“Because after losing his beloved sister, Mugak’s inner (emotional) wound continued to become his conscious existence.â€

It turns out, there’s also Yuchun’s “carefully calculated†acting hidden here! Indeed, this is the role that only he can manage!

“But it’s really very difficult to act it out! The moment when one feels pain, not only the expression, but also the body will have a reaction too. But to act it out and pretend as if it’s not painful is really hard compared to what I thought. I have thought about it a lot on how to let viewers feel that this kind of unusual character who doesn’t feel pain was natural.â€

Then, are you sensitive to pain?

“I’m scared of pain! But everyone doesn’t like pain, right? (laugh) Also, Mugak has a huge appetite. That’s why when we have to shoot a scene where I have to eat a lot, I really want to die. (laugh) I feel that food has a certain time frame to be considered delicious. But while shooting, I don’t worry about that. But I came to know about it again this time while filming. Food has to be eaten at a certain period when they are still delicious. And that is courtesy. â€

Mugak is often misunderstood because he cannot feel anything. In real life, did you experience being misunderstood?

“A lot. For example, 10 years ago during my debut, originally, my personality was relatively quiet, more like an introvert. That’s why the staffs at the TV station often misunderstood me. Because I don’t talk much, so they thought I’m arrogant because I gained a little popularity. So after that, I consciously changed my personality to become more cheerful and more talkative. But I also became someone who would drink a lot when I start to drink. (laugh)â€

71.png?w=1280

Yuchun according to his co-stars

Year 2010 “Sungkyunkwan Scandalâ€

Kim Kap Soo sunbaenim (played the role as his father): “ Before, I’ve known Park Yuchun as a singer only, but his acting is very natural, unlike the other juniors. Yuchun’s character is very good, very honest and respectful.â€

Year 2011 “Miss Ripleyâ€

Lee Da Hae: “Park Yuchun is baby-faced, but he also has a very mature side. He would even respond to my jokes seriously and there were times when he would even say some lame/corny jokes. A very interesting person. At the filming site, he’s like a mascot.â€

Year 2012 “Rooftop Princeâ€

Director Shin Yoon Sub: “Park Yuchun has the necessary talent and ability of an actor. Very sensible and his expressions are full of charm… and even as a man, I’d also get attracted. That’s why now I understand the reason why he is loved by women.â€

Jung Suk Won: “The feeling of Park Yuchun’s acting is very good. During filming, we had a lot of on-the-spot acting. The comedy scenes became lively and fun because of Yuchun. Also, while shooting, an unfortunate thing happened but he totally didn’t let anyone feel these things, making me feel that Yuchun has a strong sense of responsibility.â€

Year 2012 “Missing Youâ€

Song Ok Sook: “Park Yuchun can show his emotions deeply and can absorb the things taught to him immediately. I admire and appreciate his enthusiasm and his talent. He’s very honest. His effort in attempting to break the idol singer attitude is very good.â€

Year 2014 “3Daysâ€

Director Shin Kyung Soo: “Park Yuchun’s ability to do action drama is very high. He can instantly understand the situation of the character and his acting has an explosive force. His performance in terms of the character’s emotional part is also very good. When the TV drama started, his acting on the part where Tae Kyung suppressed his feelings of anxiety and there were tears in his eyes was very good.â€

Year 2014 “Haemooâ€

Kim Yun Seok praised him saying: “Yuchun is like a sponge, his ability to adapt is very outstanding. I don’t quite understand his past, but he’s definitely not a weak guy who grew up sheltered. That’s why his ability to absorb is very good. His attitude in acting is excellent. In the future, as an actor, he should be able to go all the way and at the same time, grow more.

Kim Sang Ho: “Yuchun already knows how not to overdo and exert too much when acting. Normally, it would take 10 years for other people to grasp this idea. He’s really an intelligent actor.â€

4.png?w=1280

—Do you have confidence in your ability to be funny? —

Indeed, during the interview when he just started to debut, Yuchun gave people the impression that he’s more introvert and doesn’t talk much. But right now, during the interview, Yuchun keeps on laughing out loud. He’s cheerful and at the same time, playful. This kind of cheerful disposition, perhaps, has a connection with Mugak.

“Yes. Before his sister became a victim, Mugak was a very cheerful man. After he met Chorim who has an unusual ability, his bright personality was naturally restored. There’s a reflection of my everyday life in my acting during that part.â€

Actually, one of Mugak’s charms is his talent to be funny. He reluctantly became Chorim’s comedy partner, who was determined to become a stand-up comedian. Obviously, he’s a man with no feelings, but he’s gifted with such talent. He showed his comedy skills that made people laugh so hard.

“It’s my first time to play this kind of comedy role. It was really very difficult when I was acting on the comedy dialogue. Once again, it made me feel that comedians are respectable. The scenes of the comedy dialogue were mostly done on the spot. And because the director said, “Yuchun, just act as you like!†That’s why it was really quite stressful.â€

Mugak was forced by Chorim to put on the wig, and then, seriously posing as a countryside person who just came to Seoul. That part of the drama really made people laugh! Producing an unusual sound by saying “churrâ€, and then, making a surprised facial expression… it was a skill that would really make the comedians feel that they are not as good!

“Although I’m not like Mugak in terms of how he said the comedy dialogues, but I can make funny jokes. I feel that I have the ability to be funny. I have confidence that I can make people laugh!â€

I believe everyone have heard Yuchun said these words during the FM. The director of this drama, Baek Soo Chan who continuously praised Yuchun’s acting, also confirmed it by saying, “Yuchun would usually make some lame/corny jokes to liven up the atmosphere of the filming set.†(laugh)

The actors who have worked with him before have also said the same words. How does Yuchun think about this?

“I don’t know! (laugh) Jokes should be lame/corny… that kind of subtle feeling, to be considered fun!â€

No matter how you say it, Mugaks’s comedy dialogue became a hot topic in Korea. You definitely can’t miss this.

5.png?w=1280

The romantic part of this drama is also a must-see. Mugak intentionally treated Chorim coldly and ordered her around. He’s full of arrogance, yet a lot of his lines and actions moved the hearts of a lot of women. While filming, which part of the drama made Yuchun’s heart pound?

“The scene where Mugak used perfume to propose. Because Chorim can see smell, so he used perfume to express his intention. Compared to the method of expressing it, I feel the time while waiting for the answer will make ones heart pound. Although I have the read the script, so I already knew the answer. But still, it made my heart pound. Others are also like this. For example, during concerts and fan meetings, the time while waiting at the backstage before the start of the show, that kind of feeling when your heart beats, I like it very much.â€

Then, how does Yuchun feel about a woman like Chorim who likes to be funny, making Mugak as her comedy partner, has the unique ability to see smells, and can also be an assistant during investigations. A very unique girl, right?

“Chorim is always very cheerful even if Mugak doesn’t do anything special. Gaining strength from that kind of woman. She’s also very amusing even if I don’t do anything. That’s why when we were together, it was very comfortable. I feel it’s very nice. It’s still nice for women to feel natural. If a woman likes to be funny, we should be able get along well because I also have the ability to be funny. (laugh)â€

How about age? Up until now, the female leads were either of the same age or older than you. Chorim’s age was set to be of the same age as Mugak’s sister. Will your way of getting along with younger women be different?

“It’s my first time to work with a younger actor because the characters were set up like this. Also, Shin Se Kyung is younger than me. That’s why there will be a difference compared to the older characters. The kind of feeling of wanting to protect her and hug her tight.â€

You don’t have this kind of feelings for older women?

“No, I also have feelings for older women. Really, I absolutely have feelings but it’s a little different. How do I say this…very affectionate. With older women, I like to hug tight. With younger women, I feel like touching her head because I’m fond of her. Older women’s cuteness is different.â€

In the drama, there was this line that move people’s heart…. “How should I call you? My lover, my woman, girlfriend, you choose one!†How does Yuchun think about this line?

“Do women still think this kind of proposal is good? I personally still prefer to be straightforward. The words are shorter. For example, “Then, just like thatâ€. Is it not already understood?â€

 â€œThen, let’s be a coupleâ€, you mean this one?

“Yes, I won’t say that kind of words.â€

6.png?w=1280

But with regards to this kind of straightforward proposal, the hearts of a lot of women will be moved!

“It’s okay to call me anything. But I still like being called “Oppaâ€! In Japan, how do couples call each other? “

“Yuchun-san? It’s not bad too! There’s a feeling of respect. It’s very nice!â€

The topic returned back to the drama. Interpreting Mukgak, a man with no feelings, Yuchun’s acting gave people the feeling of exquisiteness. Do you feel that with regards to acting, there’s a particular sense that is very important?

“Ah, with regards to acting, there are a lot of senses that are needed. There’s no way to choose one. Is it the sense where I’m most sensitive? No, it’s not hearing. Actually, my sense of hearing is not very good because before, I often listen to loud music during concerts. That’s why it’s not very good. The sense that I’m sensitive at would be my sense of smell. I hate the fishy smell. I really don’t like that smell. The smell that I like is the scent of something light. It’s not perfume but the smell of shower gels. I like the kind that is not very strong, just a light smell.â€

Do you wish to have Chorim’s special ability?

“I don’t want to.â€

Yuchun seems to deny it immediately.

“I don’t want to see a lot of things. Being able to hear a lot of things will also be hard. It’s enough for me to have normal senses.â€

Then lastly, let’s talk about some serious topic.

“Hey! I’ve been answering the questions seriously!â€

Yuchun, of course we understand! (laugh) From Sungkyunkwan Scandal, it’s already been over 5 years since you started performing. Do you have you have any thoughts on acting?

“Honestly, I feel that my acting still lacks a lot. Based on the Japanese age, I’m already 29 years old. I feel that acting officially starts after the age of 30. Specifically, after filming the TV drama and the movie “Lucid Dreamâ€, I feel that if I don’t seriously think about acting, it would be very dangerous. Up until now, there were a lot of parts where I would slack off while performing. But in the future, I have to seriously think about it. Acting is profound. You can’t just use a simple mindset and act. Also, acting with the thought of just satisfying oneself will also not work. That’s why I feel I still have a lot to learn.â€

Lastly, do you have any words to your fans?

“This time when coming to Japan, at the airport and also at the places I went, there were a lot of fans waiting for me. I’m really happy. Because of my 2 –year military service, we cannot see each other. Thus, it will more difficult for all of us. Please be sure to take care of yourselves, I will work hard and I’ll look forward to the day when we can meet again and do activities in Japan.â€
