The title song of the same name, WANT, is disco-based up-tempo dance song. With the attractive lyrics that express ‘Wanting more.’ And above all, Taemin’s performance (dance line) that flows like water is outstanding. “Watching, watching, and watching again, Taemin you’re always wanting to watch. I wanted to show the public a different side which has developed. Although I feel burdened by the long break, I feel excited this time. As time goes on, your taste doesn’t change. While searching for new parts, I had to invest time into myself so that I could melt into the color. I’m a singer who focuses on the performance, dance too, so I tried to find something other than what I had shown in MOVE†Taemin is uncanny/odd singer. If you watch him on the stage, he’s not really feminine nor is he really masculine, but still strangely sexy. It feels like he’s fragile and would break but also throws in some intensity. Oddly enough, Taemin doesn’t feel cringy even if he pretends to be fatal. It’s because he’s got confidence together with his own certain color. He knows his strengths well and can make himself stand out. Even the ends of his fingertips look like art. This is why it’s enjoyable to watch his performance and has always met expectations. “I called myself ‘performance-type singer’ but it’s sad that I feel it’s not enough (vocal). In SHINee, my position has also been dance, and I think that performance is my strong point, but if I’m always showing the same side, the public may get bored. I’ve always thought that I should show my development rather than what everyone already knows. But I think I made a good image of being a performance-type singer. In fact, my greed wanted to do something completely new. But if I wanted to establish the image that I created, I thought it would be better to take the MOVE image. Truthfully, I wanted to explode with MOVE but it’s not such a song. So I think I’ve left some people who watched me with some regrets. I tried to fill in the gaps.†Taemin’s concept this time is the fatal attraction of a man who’s both, sensual and pure. Taemin, who has a fine appearance and a slim/slender figure, has been solidifying his sexiness, decadence and neutral image since 2014 when he transformed into a soloist. With the addition of pulling off concepts and stage dominance, a genre of Taemin who nobody else can recreate has been born. “If you think about the merits of the solo artist Taemin, then it’s my own style. In a way, I think that I have my own style. When you ask several people to dance the same dance, I think I can digest it in my own way. My own style that’s different from others.†Since WANT is a more upgraded version of ‘fatally sexy’, he has paid more attention to his style as well as choreography. WANT is also choreographed by Koharu Sugawara, who also did MOVE. Taemin showed his satisfaction saying "(She is) someone that shows what's inside rather than fancy skills. I think that kind of dancer is cool and the choreographer is the one who draws out what's within me. Working with her I feel I have made advances and growth. I thought about growing my hair, but all the styles came out after the meeting. The signature image was said to be ‘neutral’. I’m the skinny/lean type but the staff sees this as an advantage. Because there’s not many males as lean as me, I think of it as another good point. I also don’t feel the masculine charm of a macho man. I think it’s different from me. I believe it’s more special to seek a neutral image. If I take a neutral image all the way, you’ll have to say it’s Taemin-like. I think it’ll be imprinted on my own image.†(laughs) Concept, choreography, style etc., when you look at it as a whole, it gives you the impression that a lot of effort was put into this album. Taemin acknowledged it, as expected. “I worked hard on my first solo album as it was made but for my second album, I shared my opinions a lot. Through such process, I learned that we have to make agreements. I trusted the staff around me this time.†If you had to compare your upcoming solo album and SHINee albums, “SHINee takes the voice as a whole and synergy into account, but in my album, I put the character first. I’m looking for a song that can capture and show my character. If there’s something I want from WANT, it’s ‘differentiation’. To be honest, no matter how much I try, I’ll lose my stamina with my age, and there will always be new people who can dance well. If I want to survive here, I have to show a person named ‘Taemin’. The differentiation will soon be Taemin. WANT gives the feeling that only I can do it. I want to create a signature image that says, ‘This is really Taemin’.†With DANGER, MOVE, WANT, what will Taemin’s next album look like after completing sexiness & decadence? “I want to change my style. I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of dark songs so next time, I want to do it with a little brighter feeling†and “Just because it’s bright, it doesn’t have to be cute or adorable, should I say I want it in major cord, I want a song that doesn’t have a dark feel to it.†Taemin, who has made his debut in SHINee, is now in his 12th year. As a team that was together for a long time, for Taemin, SHINee is more than just a group he belongs to. Unlike the past where they thought they were a team that had to show great teamwork, they just feel like brothers now. “It feels different to a family, but I view them more as older brothers than as members. Should I say it’s a little deeper than affection? Before, when we had personal schedules, we didn’t look for/watch the broadcasts, but now if we’re curious, we do. I saw the members for the first time 14 years ago. Because I met them when I was in elementary school, they seemed like a sky to me, but now I’m also 20 and Onew-hyung is over thirty. I’ve recently realized that a lot of time had passed. It seems like the surroundings haven’t changed but it has.†Fresh and cool SHINee. Although he’s still the youngest in it, but Taemin is one of the sunbaes/seniors in the music industry. He’s also influential enough to be considered a role model for numerous younger singers. Taemin, who used to be a boy, grew into a young man undergoing many changes. It is now the border between youth and adulthood, creating his own unique world of music different from SHINee’s. “I’m an idol, but I think I’m at an ambiguous age to call myself one. The meaning of idol is an idol/icon, but the word ‘child’ is used to make you feel young. Compared to last year and this year, I feel like I have grown from a young man to an adult. I say adult but it’s a developing/growing stage. Growing older, I learned to say things out loud, I don’t want to bottle things in my head. Of course, there are hard parts but I’m working on it.†When asked about this year’s goals and plans, Taemin said, “I really want to eat a lot of delicious food. I want to eat until my belly bursts. Recently, I’ve been hooked on Chinese food, but I want to try it all. (laughs) I’ve released a lot of albums, but I hope the song gets a lot of love. But now I’m trying to quench my thirst. Since it’s been a long time since I made my comeback as a solo artist, I want to show you my best performance. If I get a chance to release another album, I’d like to show you something new. Years ago he was ridiculed for being just a "pretty face" with no singing talent to becoming a force to be reckoned with.
