Japan has always had US bases in Okinawa, they are expanding more. The Japanese government requested for more because the tensions have recently escalated in Asia (in the disputed waters) and they want to be prepared. They aren’t the only ones preparing though, they are simply the ones asking fo US help in their prerpations. Most Japanese don’t care about this, but Okinawans are pissed because they don’t want them, they have a history of bad relationship with their current US bases. Additionally, mainland Japan has a complicated relationship with Ryukyuans, they used to be different countries in the past, and Ryukyuans still experience discrimination in housing or employment when they move to the main Japanese islands. But this why most Japanese don’t care about the bases. However, the new base will not stop because Japan and US have an agreement for decades that US will support Japan militarily if the government asks.

USA has had bases in Japan for decades now post-WWII because once they enter a country they never leave.

Same as Korea, the USA military behaves with impunity. 

American soldier mowed down two middle school children Korea and got away with it. They also get away with sexual harassment of local women. Same in both Korea and Japan. Okinawa holds 25000+ american troops.

Okinawa has had a problem with military bases because of the crime committed by american soldiers that goes unpunished. Recently an american troop raped, strangled and killed a woman that's why the anger is even worse. They want the bases to be completely removed from the island but USA plans on moving it and damaging the environment even further.

Contrary to what someone posted here, these plans are not recent and have been formulated for decades.

There have been protests in solidarity with Okinawans in Tokyo and Nagoya etc too.

Notable anti-war activists have spoken out against the recent developments including Hayao Miyazaki.

That’s exactly what they are doing by increasing the number of bases though. Shinzo Abe has requested the increase of US influence to improve the defenses for Japan, And it’s not US either, he has also cooperated with UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, and Singapore in joint military programs and thus improving realtions between these countries (Source https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/10/15/asia/japan-military-visibility-intl/index.html, https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asia/japan--india-negotiating-military-logistics-pact-in-tightening-of-ties-10853206 )All these other countries are doing the same thing with increasing military presence too. All in all, they are making the first steps towards an Asian NATO.

 

However, the shameful behavior (rape, murder, awful, awful things) of US soldiers is the main reason why the bases are not wanted. Polls have shown that 75% of Japanese people want US bases because it fosters cooperation between the two countries, but not where they live, because there are only negative stories coming when US bases are nearby. This is why the feelings are the strongest among Okinawans, that’s where most US bases are. According to polls: 50% of Okinawans want the numbers the bases reduced, while 41% want them gone completely. Increasing the number is something they don’t want at all.

 

Also, Shinzo Abe wants to change the constituion of Japan and make the country more militaristic https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/10/14/abe-renews-pledge-change-japans-constitution-boost-troops.html which has drawn the ire of pacifists across Japan, with as someone else mentioned in this thread, Hayao Miyazaki too.

Those Koreans must support North Korea because if the US had left zero troops in South Korea, they would have been invaded again by North Korea.

 

Then the US should let it happen since they're asking for it

 

They're doing good in not intervening in Taiwan already despite the taiwanese asking for it, otherwise the anti-colonization squad will lose their shit smile.png

Ikr! People always talk bullshit about DPRK not knowing that actual Koreans DO consider themselves as "Koreans" not south or north defined by a line drawn randomly on a map. Kim Ill Sung was a freedom fighter for 'KOREA' not North Korea. If you talk with Koreans they will tell you that ROK has spent most of its time under right-wing dictatorships instilled by USA.

I mean, Moon Jae In won on the platform of better relations with DPRK. imstupid.png  But I am sure all the people from ROK should bow down to the USA and hate their own countrymen.

I love the development between the relationship of the two countries thanks to Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae In. Hopefully we will see reunification in our lifetime lovestruck.png
