Do you think there should be more POC Princesses in Disney?

So far we only have Mulan, Tiana, Pocahontas, Moana and Jasmine meanwhile we have 9 European princesses ( Cindy, Snow White, Aurora, Belle, Ariel, Merida, Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa )

Disney are planning to create their very first Latina Princess ( who mind you should be brown )  and another Black Princess name Sade. So that would potentially make the WOC line 7.

With people wanting to see more diversity on screen. Do you think Disney should cater more to this increasing audience and create characters in an image of a Disney princess for everyone? There are still lots of amazing tales from around the world centers around brave women that are waiting to be explore and told.

what r your thoughts?

It’s not all about race oh god. They are white yes, but they’re from completely different countries

and yet they're all still caucasians and from europe. We barely got any representation on our own since the past 100 years were oversaturated with whites so now it's all about "race" out of a sudden? lmao

Germany and France are kinda overrepresented though. As much as it’s trendy to hate on Frozen now, at least they represented new European cultures, in particular the often forgotten Sámi people, even if the Sámi people were not fans of the costumes, because they weren’t correct. They still had Sámi music though (Vuelie, the opening song), and some aspects of Norwegian (e.g. horse manestyles) and Swedish cultures (the Heyoo guy wears a traditional shirt) appeared there too. But it was very diluted, I wished Disney had focused more on those aspects. I thought they would change with Moana since the culture represented there is more exotic to the world, but just like with Frozen, it’s very diluted in the background, and the story is generic Disneyfied European fantasy. It’s not a bad movie at all, it simply could have been better if they put a bit more effort. Just like Frozen.

I remember a French animated movie, Kirikou, inspired by actual West African fairytale, instead of Hans Christian Andersen and Grimm brothers, and it’s amazing. The characters are amazing, the culture represented is amazing, and the narrative is unique. Also the art and animation were just perfect. I want more fairytales like that. Tell me stories from all around the world like that. Heck, give me a villain protagonist Disney princess that redeems herself, just like the witch in Kirikou. That’s what they originally wanted to do with Elsa anyway, so it’s not impossible to imagine...To think, they really had plans to make Frozen actually interesting at first, but they gave up.

The fact that they changed so much the original story for Frozen was such a let down. Have you seen the 1957 Soviet version? I don't know how much they represented the culture, but it was a beautiful animated movie, even Miyazaki said it influenced him at the beginning of his career - and they kept the story closer to the original.

There are several POC Princesses. Not to say that they can't make more, but POC representation is not something Disney is severely lacking.

I'm hoping for more movies with male leads personally. I feel like there's room for more stories about men who don't subscribe to the ideal masculine male concept, and whose journeys don't revolve around women and heterosexual relationships.

More like the original for sure, but the Soviet version didn’t try to be culturally accurate, because it’s not set in any country in particular, just far far away in mix-and-match European fairytale land. Disney estabilished Frozen was set in Norway, so you’d expect Norwegian culture to make an appearance. They also said they would include Sámi and Swedish people too, which is honestly exciting, those are cultures that outside of Scandianvia, no one really knows about, so Disney created a great way to learn new things from them. But their input was very superficial. For example, costumes are unrecognizable by native Scandianvians, they just have so vague motifs to say it’s inspired by them. What was even the point of setting it in Norway then? They could have just gone like the Soviet version and set it in far far away European fairytale land.

if you can do simple math ratio, I'm pretty sure you could tell how many POC there are and could count them with your little fingers in contrast to their white counterparts smile.png

So, what, because it's not a strict 50/50, Disney needs to do better? That's not how it works. Disney does enough to represent PoC.

By your logic there should also be a 50/50 ratio on disabled Disney leads, LGBT disney leads etc... Or unless you think only PoC representation matters?

where did I said or implied any of that? I am only pointing out the idea that there should be more POC characters in Disney which is exactly the main subject of this thread :)
