How important is vocal technique to you in your music?

When I was younger, I couldn't tell the difference between "good" and "bad" vocal technique, but as I started to become interested in singing and becoming a singer myself, I paid more attention to it, and started to look for it in the singers whose music I listened to. These days though, I feel like some people are too focused on "technique" and neglect the other side of singing, which is performance, emotional delivery, musicality, tone, etc. These things are just as important, if not more important in mainstream pop music because most casual listeners won't be able to discern "strain vs. support" for example, which is why singers with impeccable technique are not necessarily successful if those other aspects are missing. Obviously, these things aren't mutually exclusive, and a singer can certainly have both good technique and good performance/delivery/etcetc. Taeyeon (probably my favourite singer EVER, and I love her music) is a good example of that. And although I do follow the progress of her technical improvements because I'm her fan, I think I've come to the point where I don't really care that much anymore in general when listening to music.

Like for example I enjoy Bom casually singing along to a guitar MUCH, much more than Sohyang belting and resonating up and down the 5th octave. In fact, I don't really care much for Sohyang at all and IMO all the theatrics that she does with her voice a lot of the times really detracts from the melody and message of the song, and to me comes off as her simply showing off what she can do.

Bom singing with her golden voice makes me happy, and that's really all that matters at the end of the day when it comes down to music. FOR ME. (i.e. don't come for me, this is my opinion lol).

You can tell who uses their stomach or chest voice when they're singing when they sing the high notes.

From the stomach singers you can also tell who uses full power with their esophagus or restricts it

I'm not saying one voice is stronger than the other, but it's how comfortable the singer is.

I do like that fact that Kpop has some really good singers considering how low the bar is in the western world. Especially in pop there's like only a handful of singers actual at a lead (not even main) vocal level. Kind of embarrassing.

Idols themselves > Music > Vocals > Dance

I need to actually like the members to actually stan them, then Music is self explanatory, even if someone is really good I need to actually like what they put out. Vocals over Dance cause I listen to the songs more than watch them, I tend to watch the first performance followed by any 'special' performances cause generally once you've seen a couple you've seen it all. Except if your Mamamoo where you try to change things up each time.

From 1 - 10 I say it's a 5. But I agree I prefer emotional delivery, musicality, tone more, but I prefer my artist to have at least average or decent technique at the very least.

i would say a LIIIIIITTLE higher than 5 for me, because having great vocal skill can even make a boring track listenable, but i totally agree.

often people who i'm told have fantastic technique sing that most boring tracks because they only deliver an effortless-sounding perfection... which can be nice depending on the song, but i prefer songs that have a slight level of imperfection and rawness to the vocals (heck, even being a hair sharp/flat can bring emotional depth). of course, this still requires a high level of skill and technique, but it’s a different kind.

examples:

Crush - Lay Your Head on Me

JOO - Late in the Morning

Tiffany & Taeyeon - Lost in love

Utada Hikaru - Final Distance

Shiina Ringo - Gamble (really anything by her)

Kuraki Mai - Secret of my Heart

Since I don't know much about vocal technique I don't really care, I just listen to a song if I like it. But I also have to say that if their voices crack while performing, mostly if it's not while choreo but while them just standing on one spot, that put me off tbh, but that's it and it's more about performance than the song, I guess, so yeah.

Is it really though?

Just in terms of technique. For that Pop music primarily aimed at young people which is exactly what Kpop is as a whole, then yeah, like the Ariana's and Demi's etc. People like Gaga and Beyonce I think target an older crowd. Outside of just mainstream Pop then no mostly because of how minuscule the Korean music industry is when its basically like 80% Kpop and the other 20% Starbucks music, rap and Ballads.

Then again I'm mostly thinking about Lead and Main vocals in the groups and ignoring the vocal holes in groups, so ratio wise it might not be too bad. Out of the actual vocalists though you could pick out like 10+ people that are pretty much more technically sound than a majority of Pop singers outside of Torrie Kelly lvl singers (whats on the radio right now)

I mean a lot of people around me think Bruno mars is an amazing singer....like lol. Hell of a performer though, and he makes great music.

Not at all. All I want is a melody that isn’t boring. Even ballads can have interesting instrumentals.

I listen to instrumental versions a lot too
