Will there ever be another Jay Chou, JJ Lin, or Wang Leehom?

I'm not too familiar with male Chinese/Taiwanese musicians nowadays, but it seems like there hasn't been any rising singer-songwriter in the past decade that can take the torch from these legends. All these new idol groups are great but it's starting to make me worried that this era of Chinese music is going to come to an end in our lifetime :(

Honestly, I would say JJ Lin is the one who actually rose to the top and cemented his place as a legend in the past decade. He debuted early and already received a lot of attention and popularity back then, but I really wouldn't say that he's been in the same tier as Jay Chou/Leehom until the last 5-8 years where he's been much more established as one of the top singers in C-pop. (Like back in 2006/7, Jay and Leehom are already at the top but JJ is more like a popular rising star)

As for the future, I don't think you have to be that worried. If anything, there are more and more singer-songwriters in the industry. Eric Chou's ballads are almost all hits and his latest song is already sweeping the charts. He's still pretty early in his career and capable of composing different kind of music (not only ballad), so he definitely has the potential. If we look back a bit there's also Crowd Lu and William Wei who debuted as a singer-songwriter and got tons of attention since their rookie year. If we go further into bands, Mayday is the legend but 831 is slowly establishing themselves as well.

Not to mention there are also many other popular, talented singers in Taiwan like Jam Hsiao and Yoga Lin etc. I don't think it's really a must to be a singer-songwriter to become a legend (and in fact both of them actually compose some of their songs).

It's an interesting question but I think we also need to be careful about wearing rose tinted glasses. There will always be new talent that rises to the top. The singers you mentioned have made such an impact and inspired so many that I can't see how they can be the last of their kind.

Of course, times do change and groups are having their moment in mandopop right now, however pop music is cyclical. Groups tend to have a short life span and the market is getting saturated with ones of varying quality.

I think things will balance out in the future so we will be left with some great groups and some great solo singers.

totally agree, but i think we're watching the end of an era and seeing the rise of a newer generation of singers in china... i.e. idol groups.

kinda like how the era of cantopop came to an end (except unfortunately for cantopop, there was no era after that lol)

i hope old-school style chinese music doesnt die tho T_T

Maybe so but I don't believe the rise of idol singers will signal the end of other types.

Also, there has been a new era after the golden years of cantopop, it just hasn't been as successful or had as much of an impact. It remains to be seen what impact this or the next generation of mandopop singers will have...

There's so many more platforms and channels to promote on now, I think it's hard for new singers to gain such a dominance in the field. This is a general trend that I think applies across the board beyond Chinese music. There's so much content on Spotify and Netflix, single handed dominance is harder to achieve because so much variety is easily accessible.
