Cheaper, Portable version of Nintendo Switch rumoured to launch this year

A rumour of a new Nintendo Switch Model was circulating last year due to Wall Street Journal Japan reporting on it (a very reliable source).  Now Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei has published a report detailing Nintendo’s upcoming plans for the Switch in 2019.

Nikkei revealed that Nintendo is making a smaller and cheaper model (nicknamed Nintendo Switch Mini) of the Nintendo Switch, scheduled to launch sometime in mid 2019.

Nikkei says this information comes from suppliers and game development companies who were informed by Nintendo about the plans.

Although Nintendo has declined to comment, a person familiar with the plans says the Switch Mini will be “easier to carry out†and will “broaden the install baseâ€. However, it will lack certain features.

seems like Nintendo wants to win over the 3ds playerbase that haven't purchased a switch yet due to price, I think it would be a great idea to make it more accessible to those who will mostly use it portably + those who don't necessarily have/want to invest so much money into buying it as a console.

There have been rumours about this floating around for a good few months. Given that the Switch is part handheld and considering the release history of the DS line I don't have a problem believing the rumours.

A lot of people suspect that the release will coincide with Pokemon Gen 8 which seems likely as that'll bring in a good chunk of sales.

From what I have heard, you can't "switch" it, like connect to your TV screen so I heard some fans are annoyed at that, and that's suppose to be it's selling point or whatever.

But people been retorting that no one really ever used the 3d feature in the 3ds so who gives a shit.

(Also lbr, the 3ds feature was fucking crap and barely worked for years and only got actually usable with the New 3ds)

yep, you are right :) it's heavily speculated this cheaper model will be handheld only, I think those fans who are complaining are just being entitled tbh, the cheaper price for the handheld only version will be a great option for those who don't necessarily use it on their TV. I play my switch handheld like 80% of the time lol

Makes sense tbh, smart move

There's a few games I'd rather not play in handheld mode but I get that this would appeal to a lot of people (would lowkey defeat the point of the next gen pokemon game finally being on a home console tho, maybe they'll just sell the dock seperately?)
