Why is there still "royalty" in this day and age?

Royalty ended in my country because of the damned communism. The King had to leave the country and hand it over to the communists. As he was away, his children were not that known to the public. So even after our country got out of comunism, only the king was still known and loved as he was the last remaining memory from the good days in the past.

Royalty still exists because of nostalgia, when the king died in the recent years, a lot of people were really sad and remembered their past. But yeah, nowadays, royalty doesn't help my country with anything, the last remaining members of the royal family can barely even speak my language as they grew up in foreign countries.

But in countries like UK, where the royal family still has a lot of power and they can still make lots of money and have media attention, i think it's profitable to still have them

It's primarily due to nationalism. Some countries retain 'royalty' to show that they have sustained their traditions and are different from other countries with democracy. These traditions (e.g. royal wedding) are usually grandiose in nature.

idk we have them in the Netherlands and it's pointless but watch out there is an OH user who claims to be of royalty who you'll piss off if you don't support royal families lol

It's important for the people who care about their culture and heritage (those who have strong ties with the country and don't just live there because it's convenient for them and/or just because they were born there) from a symbolical point of view, unless they're under disctatorship or something... then that's another case

lol this thread reminded me of my crush who supposed to still have royalty in his blood and even has a name that showed his class. but his action is far from classy, such a wild boy making him being ridiculed by our teacher in class all the time due to his name. I think other that prestige, there’s nothing much going on and they dont do much, just few of them in the government and I myself think they aren’t really different than ordinary citizen

The Netherlands having royals is absolutely hilarious considering this country first established itself as a Republic, parting ways with the Spanish king. Amidst Napoleon losing grip and restoration of old royalty in Europe, someone thought it was a good idea to suddenly give the Netherlands a king as well. Maybe to create a sense of establishment and unity, probably to keep ties with other royal houses in Europe.

They gained popularity in the last century after queen Wilhelmina started her charm offensive and travelled the entire country, stopping by villages to interact with people and so gain trust for herself. Especially with how she kept the country's spirit alive during WW2 (with a radio show hosted from England), the earned the country's love for not just herself but her future lineage. The royals have all been positively regarded since, they are warmly received and often considered just as "normal" as the average Dutch person. Combined with a national holiday to celebrate the queen's (now king's) birthday, there is a general positive regard towards them.

So even if it makes little sense for us to have them, love for the royals has kind of become a staple of the Dutch identity, and not having them anymore would probably have bad effects on people's sense of unity.

This ^^

I just wish they paid their taxes but other than that I like that we still have a royal family, ours are cute as well (which is good for our image as a country I guess)
