nián mài de fù qīn hěn gū dú

wǒ cháng yào péi tā hē bēi jiǔ

shuāi lǎo de mǔ qīn hěn jì mò

nǐ zǒng yào péi tā zǒu yì zǒu

[The] Aged father [is] very lonely,

I often have to accompany him for some drinks.

[The] Feeble mother [is] very lonely,

You always have to accompany her for a walk.

lín jiā de yé ye zǒu de màn

wǒ cháng yào hán xiào diǎn diǎn tóu

mò shēng de pó pó dǎo zài dì

nǐ zǒng yào shàng qián dā bǎ shǒu

[The] Old man[1] in [the] neighbourhood walks slowly,

I often have to nod [to] him [with a] smile.

[When the] Unfamiliar old woman[2] collapses onto the ground,

You always have to step forward [and] extend a [helping] hand.

cháng yán dào rěn shēng yí shì / cǎo mù yì qiū

shéi méi yǒu lǎo de shí hòu

As the saying goes - [a] man [has] one life, [and] plants [see] one autumn -

Who doesn’t have [a] time [where they are] old?

##

yě xǔ wǒ jīn rì qīng chūn nián shào shí bā jiǔ

yě xǔ nǐ xiàn zài xuě qì fāng gāng zhèng fēng liú

kě shì xiǎng guò méi yǒu

èr shí nián hòu / sān shí nián hòu / wǔ shí nián yǐ hòu

wǒ shuāng rǎn liǎng bìn

nǐ xuě yìng bái tóu

yào bú yào yì kē nuǎn rén de xīn

yǒu méi yǒu yì shuāng chān dú de shǒu

Perhaps today I [may be a] youthful young man [around] eighteen [or] nineteen [years of age],

Perhaps right now you [may be] full of liveliness [and have an] unrestrained spirit.

But have [you] ever thought about [what it would be like]

Twenty years later, thirty years later, [even] fifty years later?

[When] Both my temples have been stained with frost,

[When] Your white hair reflects [the] snow,

[Wouldn't you] Want a warming heart?

[Would you] Have a pair of supporting hands?

a / rén dōu yǒu lǎo de shí hòu

ài què néng wēn nuǎn xīn tóu

zhí dào yǒng jiǔ

Ah, everyone has [a] time [where they are] old.

However, love can warm [the] heart [and the] mind

Forevermore.

T/N:

[1] 爷爷 also means “grandfather”.

[2] 婆婆, used in other contexts, can also mean “grandmother” or “mother-in-law”.
