Do you think being beautiful is a huge advantage?

There is the what is beautiful is good axiom which proposes that people associate positive qualities with physically attractive people. It has also been noted that lookism or appearance discrimination pretty much exists in many facets of life from employment to even something like law. Studies have shown that physically attractive people are chosen over physically unattractive people when they both apply for jobs (jawahar and Matson 2005, Luxer and vijver 2006.)

In contrast you have the Beauty is beastly effect which proposes that in some cases beauty is not an advantage at all which is the case when attractive females apply for certain specific jobs like security guard, etc. However majority of the studies have shown support to the what is beautiful is good effect than the Beauty is beastly one.

So do you think being beautiful is an advantage to life? And do you think anything can be done to level the playing field?

Imo, I think being beautiful does give a pretty big advantage but beauty can be so innate and open to perception. For some people they could have the same weight and the skin colour, etc., and still be considered lesser attractive due to facial features. The only way to improve and be more beautiful in this case is to go under the knife. However this is such a wrong message to send. And imo awareness should be raised.

Beauty is great but people shouldn't be at a huge disadvantage especially regarding employment and such just based on this. Unless a job requires physical attractiveness, it really should not be the determining factor when it comes to hiring. I guess if everything is equal you randomly pick who you hire and not give in to the attractive bias. Same goes to law, you need to not give into the bias and look at just the facts being presented.

Of course all of this is quite idealistic considering that the bias has pretty much steeped deeply into how people perceive things. But maybe just maybe something even a little progress could be made.

Anyway feel free to talk and give your opinions. Be civil though.

P.s. i don't condone cosmetic surgery nor do I hate it. I would not go under the knife but if you want to then you do you. Just choose a safe procedure and make sure your safety is guaranteed.

"In their seminal work, Hamermesh and Biddle (1994) found that physically-attractive workers derive sizable rents from their looks. Workers of above average beauty earn about 10 to 15 percent more than workers of below average beauty. The size of this beauty premium is economically significant and comparable to the race and gender gaps in the US labor market."

Absolutely.

Pretty privilege is real. Yes, sometimes people might have some bad stereotypes about you "being dumb, weak, slutty etc." but the good perks way outmatch the bad. I mean, ugly people not only get bad stereotypes but way fewer perks.

Well beauty is generally a subjective matter to begin with. However, it could be an advantage sometimes depending on your culture or situation or even the people you are dealing with. Unfortunately there are some societies who really care about how a person looks even when looking for a normal job or something like that and also in some cases people might just like you more depending on how you look in some societies. So it's a yes and no. It really depends.

Depends on who has it. I think the biggest advantage is that people will like you more but that's it. If you don't have anything else to back it up people will lose interest quickly or even use or hate you. I think everything has its advantages and disadvantages and beauty is no exception.

definitely. flaws of those who are pretty often get ignored as their prettiness seems to make up for it. eg. "It's okay if shes a slow worker, she's pretty and attracts customer" as opposed to "oh she both slow and ugly"

at the end, the pretty ones occasionally have more confidence than the ones not considered to be pretty. which in turn end could also be a reason for wage differences.

I'm not sure how much truth is in this short film, but it shows how companies do hire based on appearance:
