I was keeping my observations towards Xiumin and the other members' relationship(ofc he is my bias), i'd say it always been Luhan and Chen that are closest to him and no other could get into that level of closeness that he has with those two, Lay being closest but Lay is sweet to everyone so i dont know. With his relationship wth K members, I like that they really view him as a hyung seems like Xiumin had impost that since the start not be buddy2 towards them in one of the intervews Tao said Xiumin would scream at him if he talked to him informally, you know the korean system. As for Kai and Xiumin, yes they aren't really close but that doesn't mean they dont like each other thats why it irks me when some Kai bias will go spread shit like Kai doesn't talk to those people who he doesn't respect or Xiumin is jealous of him blah3x, actually since debut you could really see some interactions between these two its not like you dont see them interact at all I believe after what happened in exo startcast their bond became stronger because it really is obvious Kai is clueless of what Xiumin is telling him that moment because in exo's showtime Kai is very confident to say that he and kyungsoo are the ones who always talks formally to their hyungs.

They are like in a different circle of friends thats maybe why they seldom connect with each other but when they interact you could see a no hate relationship they have as oppose to some people made it seem to be. Unlike what most think, I think Xiumin and Kai must have some interactions from pre-debut days because Xiumin and Sehun hung out together during their pre-debut days and Sehun and Kai went to the same high school and were close even during the pre-debut era. It's most likely that Sehun, Chanyeol, Kai and Xiumin knew each other pretty well during their trainee days.

My thoughts on XiuKai

 

 

 

I don't think Xiumin and Kai are very similar though both seem to be introvert and professional, and somewhat awkward in public too.

 

Their mannerisms are quite different. I-fans are not likely to notice this but Xiumin's diction is in fact quite different from the other guys. Although he does use some youthful slangs, his language is very formal and polite in general. He uses honorifics to Tao to teach him polite Korean expressions so that Tao wouldn't slip when he needs to talk in a public setting, he said. In Tao's Instagram video clip at a beef restaurant, Xiumin was responding to Tao in a formal language using honorifics (normally people don't do this to younger ones). At the Samsung fan sign video clip about him & Luhan, Xiumin was still using the formal language (honorifics) to Baekhyun. Mir from MBLAQ said that he had good impression about Xiumin when they first met because Xiu used polite honorifics to him even though he(Mir) was younger. 

 

I think he uses informal language to members in private but still rough, vulgar words are not likely part of his dictionary. His formal manners and language are so naturally manifested in his behavior that it's likely that they were from his upbringing than from his training in SM. (Especially the other guys have different mannerism--even TVXQ's Yunho, I can often sense his rough-edge. LOL) This makes him look refined and gentleman-like but at the same time makes him look distant and aloof despite his cute face. From his cautious and good manners, I feel that he's a considerate and ethical person but not particularly a warm and angelic sugar honey. Still I think he's an approachable, open-minded and sociable guy in general enough to make many friends in the industry--he does seem to have a lot of friends and acquaintances. And he's also changed a bit over the years and become more relaxed and casual in his manners.

 

Now Kai. I think he's a rough guy, an anti-thesis of Xiumin in that regard.   One of the reasons why he shied away from the camera when he needed to talk, I think, was that he didn't know how to behave and was afraid of making mistakes. This doesn't make him a bad guy, but it just means that his manners are rough.

 

And he did seem to have a habit of calling hyungs by name, which can be considered quite disrespectful even offensive in a social setting in Korea.

 

At Weekly Idol, Luhan called out Kai for being rude by saying to him, "Yah! Are you bored?"

The word "Yah!" is a somewhat aggressive expression that you can use only to your peer or younger friends without an offensive intention in the Korean context, but he used it to Luhan, who's 4 years senior to him. It's an expression one might use at the street to a stranger to pick up a fight, for example. The nuance is totally different from Sehun's apparent joke, "Hey kids!". TBH, I was shocked and the MCs looked shocked too. Even as a joke, it's not a kind of word you'd use to your hyungs.

 

At the Sukira radio show, the members were to write complaints to some other member, Kai called Suho, "Suho-ya", no other member called an older member without attaching "hyung." Basically if you're close, you can use informal language to hyungs and seniors without using honorifics in Korea, but still you always call them "hyung" like Suho hyung. But here Kai was calling Suho, "Suho-ya" in a public letter and it wasn't even a yaja time. It is indeed considered offensive and disrespectful in Korea. Even though it can be brushed off as a joke, still I think many Koreans will find Kai lack of manners and respect, even wonder if Kai looks down upon Suho enough to treat him like that. 

 

Then there's another radio show where the Beagle Line (BaekChen especially) were calling out Kai being blunt with his words and somewhat inconsiderate. I think they were actually being honest. You know, Chen is also a secret revealer but he's a sassier one: he's not afraid of saying what's on his mind and Baekhyun as well to a certain extent. I think Kai needed some education to be polite and respectful to people around him.

 

In this context, Xiumin's Starcast comment came out and I think he was also sincere although he might not have expected it to be blown up like that. Since then, I think Kai learned to behave with more respect--he seems to me different now,      and XiuKai interactions have in fact increased. At the Sukira radio show of XiuKai after Starcast, which apparently SM planned to show the public that XiuKai were all good and close, Xiumin talked about good manners and showing consideration to others in relation to some fan's letter. He just basically said that you need to be considerate and respectful even when you criticize somebody and even when the other person does not have as great a talent as you do. (Well, it's somewhat related to what Beagles talked about Kai.  ). So I think Xiumin was gently and indirectly telling Kai to improve his manners towards the other members, and at that moment Kai remained very quiet.    Anyway, I think Kai learned and improved and they are on good terms now and even have gotten pretty close. 

 

People are such dynamic creatures, and their relationships change all the time as people change. I think a teenager full of swear words (you've seen Kai's n- & f-bomb video, right?) with punk manners can learn to behave with more consideration.

I naturally forget about and because of that, I don't pay much attention to specific mannerisms. Language is such an interesting thing. I read in the Kai N-bomb thread where one argues Kai said not "nigga" but "nigger" which is in fact used with a racist implication, so Kai's indeed an inexcusably racist. The post got 60 votes.   I was like, "Hey, I lived in the US more than 6 years and I never knew the distinction." How come they expect Kai, a 14~15-old boy at that time who barely knew any English, knew the distinction between nigga and nigger. I think he knew what nigger means but it's hard to believe that he really knew the seriousness of its implication and the degree of insult that the word is felt to black people. All he might have known along with many Korean teenagers without much expose to the English language is that nigger is a word calling Afro-American in a bad way but along with f*** it can make a really nasty swear word that can impress your peer teenage punks. 

 

Also the intricacy of honorifics can show a lot about people's manners and attitudes in the Korean and Japanese cultures, so if you're a native speaker of the language and don't use it when it's expected, then it's interpreted as you disrespect me or have really lousy manners. In the case of Kai, I think it's also combined with him being bluntly critical with other members' mistakes/shortcomings.

I read in the Kai N-bomb thread where one argues Kai said not "nigga" but "nigger" which is in fact used with a racist implication, so Kai's indeed an inexcusably racist. The post got 60 votes.   I was like, "Hey, I lived in the US more than 6 years and I never knew the distinction." How come they expect Kai, a 14~15-old boy at that time who barely knew any English, knew the distinction between nigga and nigger. I think he knew what nigger means but it's hard to believe that he really knew the seriousness of its implication and the degree of insult that the word is felt to black people. All he might have known along with many Korean teenagers without much expose to the English language is that nigger is a word calling Afro-American in a bad way but along with f*** it can make a really nasty swear word that can impress your peer teenage punks. 

 

Also the intricacy of honorifics can show a lot about people's manners and attitudes in the Korean and Japanese cultures, so if you're a native speaker of the language and don't use it when it's expected, then it's interpreted as you disrespect me or have really lousy manners. In the case of Kai, I think it's also combined with him being bluntly critical with other members' mistakes/shortcomings.

 

 

Ahh blunt might have been the wrong word to use. You're right, Xiumin doesn't come off blunt but he does seem very honest to me. Lol you know, I never noticed the similarities between Kyungsoo and Minseok. Which is funny because they were both in my top 3 when I was getting into EXO. Kyungsoo does, indeed, love to glare at sasaengs.  Xiu is so passive lol. He can never be that obvious. I've actually never heard of any stories of how he deals with sasaengs. Does he really just give them the cold shoulder?   I like how Luhan tries to run away from them or lie to them lmao....

 

 

 

Yeah that whole thing with Kai was blown out of proportion imo  I found what he said pretty sad but really, he was young so it shouldn't be used against him nor make him look any different tbh. It was just a teen being a teen. I'm sure there are plenty of Korean words that people here don't know the difference for either    It's interesting how language truly varies among culture. I was raised in America so honorifics isn't something I'm used to nor care that much for but the culture my family is from really values seniority as well so I can understand how important it is for K/J cultures. It's interesting how China doesn't really focus much on that though. I always figured they might have like how K/J did heh.
