Why do you think no international company has gobbled up a Korean entertainment company?

Considering that BigHit has huge international appeal but is fairly small, I could see it being bought by a major Chinese/Japanese/Western company. It's popularity in the West might mean it's a target for Universal Music or Walt Disney.

I feel like this already happens.Like I'm pretty sure A.C.E's company is somehow connected to Sony and I'm sure the same goes for a lot of other companies but the company itself is a brand. Bighit will be bighit no matter what company it is under so that company stanning can happen.

no but I hope Hollywood get on the BT21 movie we need already..

This would be a nightmare for me. I would prefer for any movie to be produced by Koreans. It's just that BigHIt is the most westernized company, so BigHit is my favorite to be shipped off to a foreign company like Walt Disney. I don't like Hollywod any more than other posters here.

TBF all kpop artists sign up to global companies like Universal Music if they want to promote overseas.

Why would they want that? I mean companies will let themselves be bought by bigger companies if they are going through a difficult financial situation. But Bighit is still growing, they even resisted CJ that is way bigger than them and decided to create another company together with them, but still they are a private company.

I think any business man would know that selling a company would mean that you no longer have that much control over it. I don't think anyone would want that

Wasn't fantagio taken over by that Chinese company? And A Japanese company purchased shares in Cube, but yeah, international companies haven't really bought korean entertainment companies

That's an interesting question.

I get the impression that most agencies have quite complex existing ownership with founders and family members having a lot of influence. So many Korea businesses are still linked to the founders that a potential cash windfall by selling up is not really their style. They still want to grow their businesses and "be in charge".  I suppose K-pop agencies are similar.

TIL Universal Music Group bought nearly half of Cube Entertainment.

I've just searched that. Although they bought 44% of Cube in 2010, they sold it all in 2017. See >> Universal Music sells off all their Cube Entertainment stocks

Having said that, last November Cube and Universal Music Japan created a joint label called U Cube. Check out Soyeon being all corporate at the launch event. (Apologies to the other idols I don't recognise...)

Universal Music Japan is different from Universal Music Group though. One is based in France, the US and UK, the other is based in France and Japan. I think BigHIt might be a good contender because the fandom is already so international so it would cause the least disruption.

SM and YG should not be gobbled up, but maybe expand into other media areas and become bigger. JYP could be bought by a another Korean company.

BTW I wonder why they haven't renamed it Vivendi Music Group yet?

Tbh i do think Kpop is big in western countries, but not as big as some kpop fans think it is.

On this. Vivendi's Universal Music Group is valued at something like 30 billion euros, so Vivendi wants to sell 50% in the company. Tencent, of China, is one of the leading bidders for the company. I think it would be in BigHIt's interests to sell to a company that's got interests in both China and the West.

Because it's not a good investment.

I guess it depends then. I could see a Tencent (China) and Vivendi (France) jointly-owned Universal Music Group buying up music companies in East Asia. It would be a good investment on the part of Tencent in terms of cultural ideology, whereas it would allow Vivendi to grow the market share of UMG into China.
