Is Korea Really THAT Fucking Superficial?

Let me just say I am Korean American. I moved to L.A. when I was 2. So let's get my ethnicity/nationality out the way. I am very much American. I think that Korea and America BOTH have issues. I would never choose either as better. But I fucking hate when people pretty much from America say that Korea is superficial as if we aren't superficial funny as shit. Let me address this very popular comment.

Korea is superficial, they put so much emphasis on image. They include photos with applications.

They are and I agree. But so does America minus having to include a photo of yourself. There have been many studies showing that attractive people are more likely to be hired and fat people are less likely to be hired. Let's not forget constant fat shaming people do especially towards Women. Let's not forget why America hates fat people in the first place especially towards Women. People mask it as saying it's a health concern they have for someone when in reality they just hate how the person looks (aka they are being superficial). I am not overweight at all but I notice the sexism and the superficial...ness(that's not a word probably) within fat shaming. I think Americans we are just as superficial the difference is we are not vocal about it, we think it in our heads whereas, Koreans will say how they feel. THAT is the only difference. We're just as superficial. And some people may say, but there are ads in America telling us to love ourselves. And that would be my question well..2, to you. How many people are following that message? Let's be fucking honest..not many. How many people can look past physical appearance? Not many. Both Korea and America are wrong in putting emphasis on looks and need to work on things.

Feel free to disagree, but let's have a respectful debate.

No, I think Korea is more superficial. You also have to consider that they're one of the countries with the highest rate of plastic surgery in the world.

It's because PS over there is cheap and good quality.

Hmm, well I believe South Koreans aren't taught to be confident as much as we are. That is probably why Koreans are more likely to get surgery. It doesn't mean they are more superficial than we are. And America we may diverse, but the Western Beauty Standards aren't that diverse.

But agree to disagree.

For a forum that's got a lot of focus on Korea this place sure loves to hate them...

It's a country that i've never been to so I can't say. But basing your view of a country off surgery charts seems so dumb. I see just as many ads and campaigns focusing on beauty and people's physical aspects here as well. Love your body campaigns? still about how you look. I applaud Korea's honesty about looks, at least they don't bullshit around like people here do.

I thought all applications should include photos. That's what we do here (Not living in South Korea) LMAO

Anyway, I think that society as a whole is superficial. I think the plastic surgery industry in South Korea has just been sensationalized and made big by a lot of people. Sure, Korea is deemed as the plastic surgery capital of the world, and that's a big thing, but I think that people see the PS industry as something bigger than it is.

As for the superficial thing, I think it's really human nature that we care for looks. It's just that South Korean people really voice out how much they like good looking people. There's been studies on some parts of the world (not in South Korea) where it showed that good looking people have it better than the people who aren't considered attractive by convention when it comes to jobs and salaries. It's also said that people who are "good looking" are healthier, so we want to mate with them so that our offsprings would look good and be healthier.
