Just got fired for the first time

I started an internship 1 months ago. I'm in college and study business.

So the internship is a business internship at a small food company.

Theres only 1 person in the department and she hired me.

A few days ago I am asked for my schedule and yesterday my boss texted me I'm being let go because I don't have enough experience in the field and I want what she expected.

Throughout my internship she never told me anything about my performance lacking or me needing to improve. Just how nice I was and always praising me. So needless to say being fired was very unexpected

I've had lots of jobs and never been fired

Especially being an internship I thought it was supposed to be a learning experience but I guess they just wanted cheap labor.

I feel like they dont even understand the point of internships. To fire me for lack of experience, wtf ??? I'm an INTERN. But I should have seen the red flag as they never had an intern before and said they hired me to cut their workload in half.

WTF you have every right to be annoyed especially since its just so extremely unprofessional and rude to fire you like that without any warning by text!!

i think you should talk to someone in your department because if this happened to me in NYC YOU KNOW i'd report their ass ASAP for basically running a scam internship

That's really shitty of them tbqh

Some places still don't understand internship =/= free labour; it's supposed to be a learning experience for the intern & possible recruitment for the company

Another red flag was there was no set time for the internship and they were not offering a job at the end of it

I remember when I got the offer I was going to just tell them no because it seemed sketch.

I guess I should have followed my gut

i relate and had a similar experience after my sophomore year at my summer internship (thankfully wasn't fired) and actually last year as a research assistant for a professor

for that internship, my manager was really a big bum who didn't understand that just because I went to a good college, doesnt mean i know everything

it's extremely annoying and it really does suck to have horrible managers like that who don't give honest constructive feedback. in the end, learn positively and try not to think too of the past experience too much. it's stupid what some people expect sometimes

If you're interested in getting an internship, you can always look for smaller companies that are owned by larger ones.

For example, I interned for a publication that was owned by a bigger company, but the publication was still small

Companies take advantage of interns because they know that we need the experience but normal employers are less willing to take us on, so our choices are limited. Sorry to hear about your situation OP. The fact that they never warned you first is a bit fishy, in normal jobs they tend to give you two formal earnings before you're fired. I don't know if this applies to interns though.

100% mismanagement. learn from it, but don't take it as reflective whatsoever on your professional character. you need continuous feedback to draw conclusions for that, and they offered you nothing like that. shitty, shitty experience, i'm really sorry that happened to you. regardless of the quality of your work for them, they should not have fired you that way and offered you no real explanation either... :(
