K-pop Idols Having Insecurities?

Looking at them on their dramas, movies and others are like deities that came down to earth, but what they see, is actually quite different.

In the Korean drama series The Heirs, lead actors Park Shin Hye and Lee Min Ho have their own insecurities saying that they don’t like what they look.

Actress Park Shin Hye that debuted in her acting career in 2003, became the most-demanded actress in her generation and appeared on various endorsements, somewhat thought that she is not that beautiful. An issue appeared when she was questioned about her nose being altered because of a slightly crooked tip. “As the tip of my nose is slightly crooked, I got comments from people saying that I looked ugly or that the end of my nose looked like it was split in the middle. I now consider it unique and considered it mine,†she said on the interview that awed her fans. She had thought in the past of going on a surgery but decided not to and instead loved and accepted whatever her physical appearance is.

Park Shin Hye is not alone in this kind of dilemma but also her co-star and leading man, Lee Min Ho. Lee Min Ho thinks that he is not as good looking as his male co-stars Kim Woo Bin and Park Hyung Sik (still in the Korean series 'The Heirs') and envies them too. “My face and my defined double eyelids cause me some insecurity,†said Lee Min Ho, but I guess what Lee Min Ho thinks of himself is way too far from what his fans thinks of him.

Actors, actresses, idols, musicians and even ordinary citizens consider going on a plastic surgery to make them be accepted and also gain confidence. Changing your physical appearance is not bad at all as long as you don’t let it change who you are.

Article from a while back. Tell me if already posted. :)

-------------------------

So, based from your observation, who are the K-pop idols whom you think presently have or used to have insecurities? Did he/she overcome it like Park Shin Hye? The article only focused on the physical aspect but cite any example you want--physical appearance, talent, of other idols' success, etc.

Warning: long post ahead! Based on my own opinion and observation.

Going back to the article... I think PSH's nose is pretty cute :ahmagah: There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. She reminds me of a bunny in the best way possible lol. And it's a surprise to hear someone insecure because of having defined double eyelids. Quite unheard of, I think, since in Korea a lot of both regular teens and idols get double eyelid surgery so much that a few don't even count it as PS any more. Aren't double eyelids like a coveted Asian treasure there? It's a first for me, so it's just a bit weird--but insecurities are different for every one. And he's hot any way :hurr:

Generally I think stars who have had PS have insecurities--which they might have moved on from because of the PS. And I guess it's okay if it makes them feel better about themselves. I agree with what's stated in the article above:

Actors, actresses, idols, musicians and even ordinary citizens consider going on a plastic surgery to make them be accepted and also gain confidence. Changing your physical appearance is not bad at all as long as you don’t let it change who you are.

In the end, as I've always said, looks aren't everything. Good talent and personality are far more important and attractive. PS can make you more alluring if done properly, but natural good looks are always more appreciated. Be happy and content with what God gave you. Plus you don't have to look like every one else or conform to what they find beautiful to be beautiful. You're better off working with what you've got like Park Shin Hye, and people will respect you even more than if you decided to change yourself. Yes, I understand that even my faves have gone under the knife, but this is my view on the matter. IMO, getting PS is sailing farther away from appreciating yourself and isn't so much as getting over the insecurity as merely burying it under a layer of squeaky-clean--a false sparkly glamorous surface.

And to answer my own question, I think of Chanyeol's ears. They're adorable for me :ahmagah: but they have obviously been a source of insecurity--if not now, then in the past. On Hello counselor, he said that he has been bullied as a kid about them and been called "goblin". In the first episode of Showtime, when they were making jokes about Channie's Yoda ears, he went kind of blank and silent, even though he was talkative and joined in making fun of the other members the moment before.

And tbh, Chanyeol as a person doesn't strike me as completely confident, despite his cheerful facade. Just my opinion, but as much as I love him, I think he is insecure. He loves being the center of attention but doesn't like it when the jokes are at his expense. His reactions are exaggerated sometimes. Even in the fourth episode of XOXO, he jokingly admitted that he held the other members--or was it just Suho? Sorry I can't remember rn--while they were crying at an awards show because he knew he was being cut. There are many other circumstances on XOXO where he goes to wherever the camera is and stuff. Damn, that boy loves screen time :hurr: And I love seeing him onscreen as well, so I guess it kind of works :rlytearpls:  It's like he needs every one's eyes on him to boost him esteem and feel appreciated.

He's vain. He has every right to with that gorg face face though. But we know that he didn't always look that way. He was this cute chubby kid with glasses and pointy ears--quite the bully target. He kept choosing himself as the most handsome member on Happy Camp and first on some other categories. Puberty did good to him, with his precious yearbook photos as proof. He enjoys seeing his beautiful face as much as we do--keep those selcas and instavids coming. I don't know if I should see his vanity as a sign of confidence or as a sign of insecurity as well. He's not longer that bullied kid, and he obviously loves seeing the change. Then again, I think it can be taken as a sign of insecurity, since when you take selcas, you are the one taking the picture. You can control the angle and lighting. You are the one posting it. Therefore you are in control of how people see you, and of course you will only pick the ones in which you look best.

I just hope that he has gotten over his insecurities, or gets over them in the future. He did also say on Hello Counselor that he considers his ears as a good thing now. If so, then I am really happy for him. They only add to his charm and appeal. His many reactions and expressions are also a bit more toned down than before--maybe because of seeing his own derp faces on the internet lol. That probably gave him attention that he didn't want. And he's still vain as ever thanks to the mighty IG, but I like it :hurr: He was my very first bias in K-pop and my second to fourth bias now--in a jumble with Kyungsoo and Kai--so I care a lot about him. I want him to be happy with himself and realize that he is handsome and talented and amazing the way he is and he doesn't need to hog attention. I admit that his dancing is something he needs to work on more, but yeah, keep trying bby  You'll get there. You can't deny that he has improved a bit!

Sorry for the very very very wordy opinion post-slash-rant. Yeah, yeah, yeah, tl;dr. You didn't have to. That's why I put it in a spoiler.

Dang, that is pretty long. Oh, well. Tell me if this is nonsensical or just ignore if you want to.

Bom  :._.: i am not sure if she overcame her insecurities but she is a beautiful person and i really want to give her a hug and say it to her face (that she can do it and that she shouldnt let all those rude people get in her way of overcoming her insecurities)

I've heard of PSH's insecurity about her nose before. I read somewhere that she wanted to have surgery but thankfully she didn't! I think she looks hella gorgeous as is  :ahmagah:  :chu:

EDIT: And sorry OP, I didn't really answer your question hahaha. Since people already mentioned Bom and Hyorin, I won't repeat. I would assume that shorter male idols may have a height insecurity...

wenn the public demand too much from the Idols. this is the result then. every single small imperfect are not allowed.

everyone want to be like others.

but they forget : we are unique because we are different with each other.

Imperfection is perfection.

TQVM.

love all.

Taemin about his weight. I remember watching a video of him last year where he was monitoring one of thier performances and he said something like, "I shouldn't have eaten breakfast I look fat."  It was kind of alarming to me :._.:

Lime said she used to want to be Miss Korea when she was younger but she said she didn't pass the "age 16 barrier" so I feel she lacks confidence in her looks (I hope her self image has improved by now)

Almost all idols are insecure. They have people ripping them up all day, everyday. Not just knetizens or antis. Even their trainers are constantly criticizing them so that they can improve performance or looks. Directors constantly telling them how to improve their acting. Variety PDs constantly telling them how to improve their skills. Magazine photographers, physical trainers, stylists. They are all helping the idol improve, but they do it by picking apart, looking for flaws, and discussing those flaws. All the focus is on the flaws constantly. Years of that can crush anyone's ego.

Nana, I'm not sure if she still has it but she's said multiple times that she was insecure about her square jaw and monolids. She got eyelid surgery so she'd be happy with that now but maybe the jaw thing still bothers her, but it seems as though she's happy with that too now.

I think TVXQ's Changmin has or had insecurities about his nose and shoulders, but I'm not quite sure. Yunho is insecure about his manboobs. All I know is that they shouldn't cause we honestly love them. But that is just how it is... We are only human and we will never be satisfied with the way we look or what we already have.

I think all idol have insecurities, and many develop new insecurities because of fans, netizens, and general public

and not all are physical

but since you touch on Chanyeol I'll do the same since he's my bias (+plus a few other EXO members)

I agree with most of the insecurities you listed to a extent

I think the root to all of Chanyeol's insecurities is the need the feel want, and loved, and to not be alone. And that why he tries so hard to make friends and get people to like him. I think out all the members he is most afraid that people will leave him if he doesn't live up to their standard,  of who people want him to be and  doing what they want him to do. Even the members have said it themselves that out of all the member he will do anything you ask him to, He's a people pleaser. That's why I think it's not that he can't take jokes think when members say stuff like that think he's annoying or he's not attractive he doesn't believe their joking he believes they're being 100% serious. I think the reason he went blank when other mention his ears not necessarily a full on insecurity but he's definitely remembering the bullying he went through.  I actually don't think he's happy virus + Loud persona is fake, at least not completely I think hypes it up for fan because  that's what fans see him as but the persona also puts him in a 1 dimensional box. which also earned him the label of being fake. Maybe other EXO fans may have not noticed it, it may not be a big change to others but I've talked to other chanyeol stans about this and we've all noticed it, like around the end of Wolf promotion he changed he became quite and more reserved, I think he saw the comments about being annoying and fake coming from people that are already exo, it's kinda sad. Now I hardly see pictures of him smiling he always look tired and sad, he doesn't talk as much, and overall he seem abit distant; I don't know something is wrong, or if again  he's just giving fans what they want, be either way it's getting a bit depressing and troubling.

I actually don't think extremely he's vain, I think he's very insecurities about his look, Whenever he says he's the most good looking it's almost always a joke or seen as a joke, when ever he's asked seriously, he answer someone else (most of the time Kai). I think he was more vain before he was put in EXO, Now there are 11 (now 10) other guys that are seen as the same as him.

Anyway for the some of the other members

DO - Small body, comparing his talent to others ie the whole "I'm the main vocalist" bit, I think he feels insecure about his vocal ability compared the Baekhyun and Chen.

Luhan - Girly features and being considered a man

Xiumin - His weight, another person that compares himself to others this time the whole group

Suho - I think he's the other member that has the need to be loved, and also his ability as a leader

Kai and Tao - Skin Tone

Sehun - His talent compared to Kai

Chen,Baek, Lay - they hide their insecurities pretty well, so I don't know. I sometimes think Baek and Chen have the same problem as Chanyeol and Suho , but other time they seem completely secure, so who's

But I think every last one of them is insecurities with their looks

It seems like you're also Lay bias, Do you spot any insecurities?

He's my 2nd bias but he doesn't really seem to have any major insecurities to me

Sorry of the long post by the way, because chanyeol is my bias i like talking about him :derp:

He also kept saying that when they were watching their vacations. I've also heard him say that he's too small/thin and not muscular enough.

Tiffany apparently has a nose complex.
