Question to (fic) writers here

How do you guys get enthousiastic/in the mood for writing fic? Sometimes I'll get a spurt of energy and a vision of all the nice/interesting scenes I could write, all the backstories and facts about my characters that I'll be able to slip in somewhere, but that literally happens like twice a year or smth lol. And if I'm not in that 'flow' I find that writing is incredibly hard, I have to be in that mindset where I see things unfolding in front of me you know, and then I just write it down, but that hardly ever comes to me.

I've tried using stuff like writing prompts and that has helped, but I'm just curious.

i just get inspiration sometimes? normally it's easier if i've been talking with people who also write (i'm in a writers gc atm and it really motivates me lol) and also if i've been reading a lot - i don't write anything related to the thing i've been reading but something about seeing other writing makes me want to write more myself, ygm?

Oh yeah I've definitely realized that reading or watching good stories inspires me! But then I sometimes feel less encouraged to write because I know it's impossible to match up to the kind of talented people out there lol

Just 'cause I'm curious, would you mind giving out your fic account/AO3 account or w/e? It's okay if you don't wan to!

Generally I'm of the opinion that inspiration is overrated. I need it to get ideas ofc, and if I'm really inspired it's easier to write, but usually I'll get into it if I just spend some time writing. BUT I do have some tips!

if I'm struggling I usually rewatch episodes I really like and that gets me going. idk what you write fics for, but that's something that really helps me out. Another thing is imagining the fic in your head in detail. If I'm stuck, it's usually because I'm not really sure what's supposed to happen, so if I go through the scene in my head it's a lot easier. Another thing would be to write out the scene action for action, sometimes that'll make it unstick.

Inspiration is really tricky, and sometimes you just have to push through even if you're not inspired, or try to figure out why you're feeling more/less inspired. It might be that the specific fic you're writing just isn't doing it for you.

Usually if I spend long enough immersing myself in whatever I’ll write a fic about, I kind of inevitably get into the mood to write. Just surrounding myself with the characters always eventually leads me to start thinking about what-if type scenarios which usually get me writing :ahmagah:

I have a jar.

Not kidding btw, I have a jar in which I toss random ideas or even words whenever I get them and they don't fit whatever I'm writing at the time. When I'm stuck and don't know where to go, or if I feel things are quite stale then I'll just pick something from it and run with it unless it's way outside the genre I'm writing or would contradict the plot so far.

I plan A LOT. When I get inspiration for a fic or something, I usually plan it all out in my head. But I write a lot of one-shots and stuff. For longer stuff, I need to be really inspired to get at it. And sometimes for my long fics, I just leave it be and write other things for a while, then come back to it. I have too many WIPs. lol

Just curious, how long are the fics you want to write? I think length for sure alters the way I approach fics.

I get easily inspired by a lot of things. Mainly by other books that I read, though sometimes an idea will randomly pop into my head. Sometimes I also think a lot about a idea I want to write about and get inspired from there.

I write a lot of one-shots which are easier than writing a full-length fic. If your having trouble, I suggest starting from there to make it easier on yourself
