Oda reveals One Piece will be just over 100 volumes and talks about what One Piece really is

One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda revealed during his appearance in Fuji TV's Honma dekka!? program on Wednesday that the ending of the manga is "near" and that the manga will have "just over 100 volumes." Oda noted that he had thought about the manga's ending since he was still in college. In addition, the show's host Sanma Akashiya also asked Oda what would happen if a fan managed to guess the same ending that Oda is writing. Oda replied that he would change the ending.

 

Akashiya also asked Oda about the goal of the main characters in the story, the titular "One Piece" treasure. Akashiya asked if the treasure was "family bonds," and Oda replied, "No, I hate that kind of thing." Oda elaborated, saying, "That's like the ending of The Wizard of Oz, which I watched when I was a kid. Adventuring that long, and having the adventure itself be the treasure, is really dissatisfying. Those kinds of stories are impossible. It feels like, 'I've gone on this long adventure, so give me the treasure!'"

 

Oda said in an interview in July 2016 that he had finished around 65% of the manga. Oda began serializing the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and the manga has been published in more than 30 countries. Shueisha released the manga's 91st compiled book volume on December 4, and Viz Media released the 88th volume on November 6.

 

OnePiece.com and V Jump columnist Greg Werner weighed in on Oda's recent announcement. He reminded fans to put less stake in the manga creator's claims remarking that series will "continue for some time" and that Oda himself will tell stories "tongue-in-cheek and for the shock value."

The manga is currently at Chapter 929 and 100 volumes means 1,000 chapters but we all know it's not happening. Probably around 1,200-1,300? But the ending is coming guys

His storytelling is amazing and he knows what he does, how to thread in details and link certain stories to another, etc. There was a really good theory going around (about the Grand Line and Red Line getting destroyed to merge all the seas) which was well thought out and honestly made me anticipate what Oda plans for the ending!

I saw ppl saying WCI is ending in March. Then Reverie so prob Wano starts last week of March.

Same, who will be? One Piece has been part of its readers and anime/manga fans lives for decades. The day it ends will be the saddest day in the anime/manga community

Everytime there are people complaining, he releases a chapter and then leaves them dumbfounded.

The fact that the manga itself already 20 years but still selling at the top is simply amazing tbh. I want it ending but I don’t want it to be rushed. Volume 100 probably just the end of wano arc and i think we will get another 3 big arc before going to the end.

One piece is literally the anime who brought me to the animemanga world and it holds a dear place in my heart. I'm happy to know oda stands for the final he wanted and planned many years ago and that the one piece isn't an abstract treasure.

So there we are, I knew this had to end some day but I'll feel really empty lol I felt like that when Fairy Tail ended and I guess it will be the same with One Piece.
