What's the difference between a sexy concept and a girl-crush one?

Back when I got into kpop people didn't even call concepts girl-crush. No one had a name and I guess it was just a pop kind of concept. Like T-ara didn't really have a concept exactly, but these days would people call them girl crush?

Many girl crush concepts seem to still be sexy, so what's the main difference? Is it because they are less in-your-face kind of sexy like Sistar, Girl's Day, and AOA are/were?

Girl crush is more about girl empowerment, badass and cool girls, it can be sexy or not. The message is what's important.

Sexy concept is... with sexy dance moves/ mv, it can be girl crush, or it can be mixed with other types of concepts.

Girl-crush has become the umbrella term for a wide variety of concepts that don't fit into sexy or cute. Sexy are concepts meant sexually appealing. Cute are the concepts that OH doesn't tend to like. Girl crush are the rest.

Honestly, all of them have their own subdivisions. There have been threads that separate classy-sexy vs. trashy-sexy for example. There are what I'm going to call childish cute, romantic cute, fairytale cute, energetic cute, sporty cute, weirdo cute etc. Girl crush is even more diverse than the two because it's such a vague term.

For me these are girl crush, when female groups take over concepts and sounds more common among boy groups:

Concept only, not song

I thought Girls Day Female President and Expectations was a girl crush? Like empowering or something idk

Hmm maybe maybe Female President, though both got lots of attention for being very sexy.

I think the one issue then is folks will call a comeback girl crush since it looks like it based off clothes but the lyrics are literally about loving a guy or something along those lines.

That all said, I don't think kpop girl groups have to fall into 3 distinct categories. There is cute, sexy, and girl crush, but all innocent, retro, pop, edgy, and other random ones. It's just I always hear about cute, sexy, and GC, so i wondered the difference between the latter.

Yes, the types of concepts are not mutually exclusive : girl crush can be sexy, or it can be for example edgy :

girl crush: aimed to appeal to girls/women. ex anything by mamamoo (sexy/sensual girl crush), blackpink (chic girl crush), miss a ('empowering' girl crush), etc.

sexy concepts: anything meant to be sexy, can be aimed towards either men or women, ex anything by sistar, gsd, aoa, etc.

I never thought of it as an umbrella term but you're right that it is. I suppose all the concepts are umbrella terms but GC does seem to have the widest swath of styles and music under it.

"Girl crush" is to gain women attraction (but to be honest it's neutral zone)

"Sexy" concept is to gain men's

That's the simplest difference. Do notice the quotation marks.

Example (I take t-ara as they're versatile) :

Sexy -

Girl crush -

As what Empress Song Qian once said, "being sexy doesn't mean to expose more."
