I was browsing askreddit today and found this thread and this comment just blew my mind.

I honestly can't wrapped my mind around it and as much as I've been researching it, I still can't comprehend it. I get that some people can't remember faces well, I have that problem with names, but this is just on another level.

I've heard of this condition--not the name, but the idea of not being unable to recognize faces and using other methods to figure out who it is through a drama.

I have a very mild version of this

I need to meet someone 2/3 times to actually remember their face

And faces fade with time depending on how long its been since I've last seen them, so I constantly need to refresh my memory.

Remembering names is a nightmare. I used to bring a little notebook with me to work to write down everyones names but it's just so impractical  I just avoid using names when talking to people instead.

Social media is a blessing that I can just look a face up.

That is really interesting but I cant wrap my head around it skldfjas

Like what do they see when they look at a face dafkjlsdfas

So confusing

I believe that they see the same thing that everyone else does, a regular face; however, the face doesn't register in their memory so they can never recall whether they've seen the person before or not?

Someone in the comments described it as looking at a hand. You see a hand and everything that defines it but you probably won't recognize it if you saw that hand a couple days later or probably wouldn't be able to pick it out of a group of hands, so they see a face but it looks like everyone else's face. However the same way some people are blonde, or have freckles, or have a certain haircut is the same way a hand might have on a certain ring or painted nails or maybe a scar to define it. However they can remove the ring or change the nail polish so that hand you were finally able to identify is a stranger once again until you find something new to identify it by.

Someone else in the comment said they showed their friend a picture of them after dying their hair black and the friend couldn't recognize them. Turns out her ginger hair is part of what her friend uses to identify her. It's so bizarre I can't understand it.

Another example of how they have to use identifiers to recognize someone is with the series Orphan Black. If you haven't watched it the main actress plays many roles in the series all with different hair, clothes, and personalities. Apparently the whole thing couldn't stick because they can't recognize the face to see that it's the same person and what that means for the plot. In their minds it's all different people because the identifiers are all different. It's not the same experience as we would have.

Wow, because it's so natural for us to be able to recognize faces and discern facial features and stuff in even the most random things(cause the human eye is supposedly always looking to recognize faces) it is a concept that seems absolutely out of this world for me. Like I wonder since they see all faces as looking similar if they don't really find anyone to be 'ugly' or 'pretty'

Even in the hand analogy, for me I find some hands to be better looking and some to be less so and I can tell some people's hands apart because of the shape and size etc. (I'm a tiny bit obsessed with hands tho sooo).

The details and even basic concept of this is still absolutely weird to me lafskdf;asd.

Edit: I'm reading some of the comments and this is really weird

So they are able to see attractiveness and discern if someone is pretty etc or not, they just wont remember their face??? Like it wont register in their mind that they saw someone that looked like that before if they see them again but when they see them once more, they will see the fact that they are pretty again??? Like vat?

Im dlakf;sdf ... This is going to keep me up at night kek
