So, why is dating considered a scandal?

Seriously

Recommended Posts

Just an honest question, i'm relatively new to the kpop scene and never understood it.

When did idols dating become scandalous? What are the origins of that? Has it always been this way? Maybe it's just a cultural thing? I don't get it...

They are young, gorgeous, and often very wealthy, seems obvious they'll be seeing somebody.

Not sure why its considered a "Scandal" but I kinda understand why companies forbid dating, especially for rookies.

Fans can be very possessive so seeing your bias dating someone will affect the relationship between the idol and the fandom.

Sales could drop and they could go as far as to boycott that member.

Its just a mess companies want to avoid.

because the backbone of k-pop culture is the hormonally charged teenage demographic that are made by k-companies to believe idols are made for them and cannot belong to anyone but them.

Basically this. It has to do with the culture of fan entitlement that kpop is founded on. Idols are marketed as products, not people, which leads to mass delusion. Like, idols and fans even hold hands at fan signs. Therefore, idols are forced to hide their relationships from the general public. Many companies claim to have "dating bans," but they're widely considered lies to pacify possessive fans. I found it hard to wrap my head around at first too, but publicly dating is generally a big no for idols, especially for rookies.

Because the Industry is ran by their fans, popularity is everything in kpop and a seemingly unattainable idol usually isn’t good.

Every move in KPop is also very planned and scandals are a much bigger deal than in the west, say an idol’s romantic partner got into a scandal, they would also be affected. I’m sure SM and YG had to hold a meeting and they now have to figure out a way to move forward and still market their idol. Whereas usually PR Strategies are thought of way in advance.

I think this is also probably one of those words that doesn't translate the same. i.e. scandal in English ≠ scandal in Korean (it's a loaner word where the meaning changed). You have to separate what you know about the English meaning of scandal and only think about it in it's Korean context-which basically is just a dating rumor.
