OHers who live in NYC, what do I need to know before moving there?

What are the essential things to buy before moving to New York, also should I dorm with my college or get an apartment?

Dorm in college the rent here is ridiculous and you'll go broke getting an apartment plus the dorms are safer, and you'll have campus life and parties and all that.

Essential things ... other than a metrocard I don't think you'll need anything out of the ordinary. NYC is the same as anywhere else.

Is it worth it to bring my car?

My college is in NYC otherwise I would. I'm a little bit terrified of the city but super excited.

I mean  if u move to northern Jersy like Hoboken it's still close enough.

My piece of advice DONT ACT LIKE A TOURIST

What I mean by that is don't look up at the building's and stuff

no not really.

What in your opinion would be the best borough to live, I know Manhattan is the most expensive but it's also the closest to fashion stuff. Like would living in the garment district really be awful?

I would keel over and die if I acted like a tourist, I hate when people do that when traveling

would it be awful? no i don't think awful is the right word .... listen honestly all of nyc is expensive, i live in brooklyn and when i tell people my rent they go "oh but you don't even live in manhattan how is it so much?".

it's up to you to weigh the costs/risks/benefits. that's why i said dorm with your school because it's probably cheapest and you'll be closest at the same time.

Yeah I've heard NYC is really expensive, but would you say your salary is on average enough for the cost of living in the city?

no it's not enough to cover it. for example, if i wanted to live alone i'd have to give up this apartment and move to a dangerous neighborhood. nyc is so overpriced it's unbelievable.

FIT. I haven't been to NYC before but I'm going this spring.

Nice... I'm fashion design graduated... I just moved to nyc couple months ago for work. I think you should live in college dorm for first semester to see how things go. If you find some one to get along well with you could ask them to move out with you, it's cheaper that's way. Brooklyn is nice to live but a bit pricey, so Queen isn't a bad choice (depend on areas)

You should visit 7th Ave, it's a fashion district, most of fashion brand headquarters are there, and all of the fabric stores, fashion related stuff...

I'll try, I'm probably gonna geek out and make all my friends leave me.

Stay in one of the FIT dorms, at least for your first year. Enjoy NYC --- you'll be just a few long blocks from Korea Town.

No. Not worth the parking fees and increase in insurance.
